I ran accross this article by 1UP with an interview with Lead Writer Mac Walters earlier today, and the following caught my attention immediately. Those of you who have seen the outcome of Mass Effect 3 without even playing the game yet should read the following, I linked the article below in case anyone is interested in the overall interview:
1UP: Earlier you had commented about how the decisions
the players make effect the overall flavor of the experience, so I'm
curious [that since] ME3 is the end of the trilogy, at its conclusion
will you have two distinct endgame battles based on decisions a player
made? Or do they share a similar situation that's more about the flavor
of the end between the Paragon versus a Renegade? How drastically
different are the Paragon and Renegade endings? Are they crazy different
to the point where you could fight the Rachni versus the Reapers in one
instance versus the other, or is this more about how they reach a very
similar conclusion but [emphasize] the flavor and the journey to get
there?
MW: I think the endings that we have in ME3 are very
distinct. We're obviously not going to branch them and tell different
stories. Shepard's journey, which is coming to an end, is about the
conflict with the Reapers, so it's not a situation where you're fighting
a new Krogan Rebellion all of a sudden in the Renegade path, or
something like that. That's not what ME is about. It is about dealing
with the Reapers, and it will be about how you deal with it, but I think
the interesting thing that we've done is reward players. Players always
ask, "What's the best ending? What's the best ending?" And I always
say, "I don't know. How are you playing your game?" because
what we're trying to do is provide endings that reward you and match
your gameplay, as opposed to you saying, "Hey, this is the best ending."
While there's always going to be this galaxy at war, there is a game
involved as well, and you can play it well or you can play it poorly.
And so we wonder about that aspect of it as well. There may be a thing
that's a best in terms of gameplay, but if you're talking just about my
choices and the flavor and the way I want to do it, then it's really up
to you and the way you want to play the game. As an example in the
Paragon and Renegade side, there are degrees of gameplay within each of
those, so you can play it optimally well for either side and there may
be other options, but I'm not talking about them.
