Figure skating in Belarus started its history in 1961 after a large group of young sportsmen and coaches arrived from Russia. Аmong them there were: Lev Kochepasov, Alla Khlopikova, Nina Korenevskaya, Aleksei Shirshov and Irina Shirshova, Vladimir Rynin, Robert Shestakov, Evgenii Tarasov, Aleksandr Levin, Tatiana Gurieva, Igor Chekishev and many others.
First competitions were held in 1961 in “Spartak” and Republic Sports Center. Single skaters were showing the “school” program, and the next day they were demonstrating free skating.

In 1966 Belarusian figure skaters had finally received an opportunity to skate on the artificial ice – Minsk Sports Palace was opened. After training in rain, snow and freezing air it was like a fairy tale for the athletes.
In February- March 2012 in super-modern complex “Minsk-arena” will be holding World Junior Figure Skating Championships. The country has won the right to organize such an opportunity as young and prospective world centers of figure skating.
