Bioware retconned a fictional technicality for dramatic effect.
*spoiler alert*
In one of the leaked endings, the one where joker dies, they're in a mass transport conduit for what feels like a good 30 seconds trying to outrun a blast that clearly is traveling beyond FTL capabilities.
This brings up a curious question: if they're traveling at FTL speeds, how do they, or we, see the explosion behind them even? In reality, people wouldn't see the glow of the exploding relays for centuries, seeing as they're...oh yeah, light.
Unless light has suddenly become capable of FTL speeds as well...

Perhaps it's just pointless to debate the logistics of an entirely fictional science in an entirely fictional scientific universe. Because Bioware clearly retconned their own logistics for dramatic effect. And how one feels about that is up to them.
If you were to accelerate light through a massless corridor right behind a ship also accelerated, the light would not be FTL, it would merely be accelerated. The ship goes faster than light, the light trails just behind it. The issue is that the explosion of light and energy is being accelerated and is faster.
