How good is he in the end game?
How good is he as an off-Tank? As a DPSer?
Any worthwhile items he can fetch?
Any worthwhile events with him?

Overwhelm > mages. Worth it alone for that imo.

He never betrays you.

He has AOE stun and decent damage.

Im sure people can add more ;)

I agree. He can charge at Mages with decent speed + Overwhelm and the mage is gone.

Damage is ok, even better when he had the opportunity to relieve himself at a tree ;)

I prefer him over Sten or Oghren.

Most unique thing about Dog is that it runs faster than normal characters, so it saves you time while running through areas & can chase down pretty much everything. Overwhelm>mages and even some bosses.

Damage is pretty good. Tanking is a no no, leave the job to the warriors or Shale.

So Threaten & Taunt are a waste to Dog (no Tank)? How about Disengage?

I said off-Tank btw, I started a new file where I'm the Tank :D

I had him with me from start to archdemon in my human noble rogue playthrough. He's certainly viable as DPS, tanking is not recommended but off-tanking for a bit is possible, and he can kill single mages without giving them too much opportunity to harass you. However all of this is true of Morrigan and Wynne, too. He was fun to have around though.

There is one annoying endgame peculiarity, which is that very close to the end he'll level up to a point where you can't spend his talent points anymore and will have the plus sign next to his portrait constantly. This will likely only happen just before the final battle so it doesn't matter much.

Well, my Tank will be a Templar...Templar + Overwelm = pwned Mages I asume... fun battles to be had I guess.

Doesn't he get Warrior Talents like Shale?

Let's see if we can be any clearer:
"He can't get those".

Woops, sorry. Guess not.

You don't need to be a jack*** about it. I was asking a question based on a similar character, Shale, a simple no would have been enough.

Oh btw, my planned Party for this run is:

Kain (Templar / Champion, me)

Barkspawn (Dog)

Leliana (Bard / Ranger, Barkspawn needs a Wolf playmate)

Wynne or Morrigan (Probably Wynne as Shapeshifter is a waste)

If I go with Wynne, which Primal Tree should she take to make Barkspawn glow, Ice or Fire? Ice has the benefit of Iron Fist which Wynne already has but Fire IMO looks cooler (Hellhound ftw).

The ice line has the benefit of vastly overpowered cone of cold being in it...

I wish the mabari had more talents, automatic Survival skill and better gear. He's useful yes, but he could have gotten more love both mechanics-wise and story-wise. He doesn't say anything, doesn't do anything, doesn't have a nightmare in the Fade you need to resolve (you just shake him awake) ... for me, that doesn't count as a full-fledged party member which they promise he'd be.

I just confirmed this, he DOES get both Warrior Talent trees. People are such ***** and they're misinformed.

So I ask again, is he a good off-Tank OR DPSer (considering the Warrior Talents)?

How quaint because in the PC version he most certainly does not

And you all assume we are all PC gamers, huh? Yeah, assumptions leads to trouble.

And who is the one assuming now? Maybe I just didn't know that the console version was different and offered my wisdom as I knew it, but such a thing cannot be of course because all PC gamers are evil and discriminate against the poor console players.

Given that this is a message board that you're accessing on your PC, I would think the default assumption is PC, unless specifically mentioned otherwise.

The dog is, in my opinion, one of the best party members in the game. If you sink almost exclusively into str and dex, he hits very hard with very high accuracy and has very high dodge. Being the single fastest allied character in the game means that he's great for running melee enemies into ambushes and traps, his AoE stun never fails, and Overwhelm is on par with Cone of Cold for sheer usefulness.

Plus having him in the party with Leliana is adorable!

You didn't act like an ***, Varenus Luckmann did. We're cool.

But back to my question: Is he a good off-Tank OR DPSer (given the Warrior Talents)?

Not having a shield would make me not want to use him as a tank. Though not playing the console version I don't know how the warrior talents affect that. He has a high enough dodge rating if you build him as a straight DPSer that taking aggro from a few people isn't really a threat (especially with Dread Howl)

lol so the console version also has to dumb-down companions....glad I have a good enough PC for it...kinda ruins the fun of playing when the version you have has to offer extras just so it works lol

... what? That makes absolutely no freaking sense, if it's true. Why would the console version be different?
