The lesson here? We don't like surprise endings to game series. In big, crazy plots in video games, I don't think most of us like getting swerved with an ending that puts our ideal for how the game could end into the meat grinder.
For the sake of comparison, I bought Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim with expectations for how the game would go: I show up, save the life of a crumbling empire and put the screws to a ****ing dragon who no matter how powerful will fall to the awesome might of my protagonist in the end. It was predictable, but it was exciting because of the surprises being done in the smaller ways (which added variety and flavor throughout the entire game rather than at just one point), and the outstanding presentation that added this mighty, climactic atmosphere that gripped me and drew me in, because I knew it was going to satisfy the expectations that I had placed...and it did. It didn't pull punches or bull**** me. It gave me what it advertised and it created a game that I've probably pumped more time into in terms of total days since purchase, than any other game I've ever played.
Now, on to Mass Effect 3. In the first two games, we are given this feeling of triumph against all odds, the defiant bravado of a man (or woman) who is presented with a scenario cut into stone, dominated by a powerful force and says "**** you, I make my own decisions!" and destroys a Reaper, then destroys another one in the following game. In ME3, we now have a whole fleet of Reapers to contend with, and Shepard is raring to go with the entire galaxy at his back. And he goes forth and he defeats the Reapers AGAIN. Only the original endings take a sharp turn and leave us with rubble-Shepard, or with Zeh Ztranded Zormandy, neither of which are exactly "triumphant." Seeing as how this is the capstone of an INCREDIBLE experience, it should be equally incredible, in the minds of the majority of fans.
Bioware has an incredible knack for presentation and the developing of a series. Their outstanding success with ME1 and ME2 proved that. Few game series have caught on quite like Mass Effect, and with great reason. But they have GOT to be more careful in the future--even if they remedy this with DLC or a patch, it won't be rainbows and sunshine for their company. They need to keep closer focus on fan demands.

The endings are already being discussed in this thread. Please take your discussion there. Thank you.
