You do NOT have to register your Mass Effect game to obtain Bring Down the Sky. It is in fact impossible to register the game anywhere at this point. Disregard the instructions from any outdated web pages or posts, and read below instead:

UPDATED APRIL 16 2012

EA has now updated the download instructions along with a working download link and the generic key code for the free Bring Down the Sky DLC. You can visit the page I linked to below, but to make it easier, I've put all the contents of the page directly below along with some more helpful tips below that - so no need to leave this thread. You'll find lots of other helpful comments and posts concerning downloading and installing BDtS in here too

"PC Download and Installation Instructions:

1- Make sure Mass Effect is installed, then download and run the installer from one of these locations:

2- Run the downloaded file to install the new content.

3- Enter the following Mass Effect: Bring Down the Sky CD Key when asked by the installer:

If you receive a “You have reached the activation limit.” message, you will need to use the * Talk to a Game Advisor feature on our site and we will be able to unlock it for you. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause."

1. What product is the question about? = Mass Effect
2. What game are you playing? = Mass Effect 3 (I know, this is really about ME1 but choosing that will not get you Live Chat)
3. Category = Account/Registration
4. Platform = PC

The following codes have been reported as working at various times. If the 3FLL code (listed above in the EA instructions) doesn't work, you may want to try one of the other codes below. If none work, you may want to contact support (as described above) to have them increase the user limit, if you received a message upon installation saying limit has been reached.

As far as I know, the latest and last patch for ME1 - v1.02 - is still included with the BDtS download. Newer digital versions of the game probably don't need to worry about this, but if you're reinstalling from a retail disc, this might come in handy.

Bring Down the Sky Installation

If you have an older key for BDtS, and are reinstalling the game, you may come across code validation issues in the installation process. Simply use the generic key, or one of the alternate keys, listed in the post above. Follow the same directions as above if none of the keys work (i.e. talk to a Game Advisor who should be able to increase the limit upon request).

After successfully getting BDtS code to validate in the installation process, some may still have installation issues that do not concern the key code, such as the installation cancelling itself:

- This seems to be an issue for Steam users in particular. This is probably because the Steam validation key for Mass Effect 1 (the actual game, not the BDtS key) is not placed in the registry files on your computer, which happens to be where the BDtS installer looks for a valid key for ME1. This can be remedied by manually adding the ME1 key code in regedit, although I know that many people are intimidated by the idea of tinkering with your computer registry files - and well you should be because there is no guarantee that you won't mess up your computer in doing so. With that being said, take that as a disclaimer. I won't post instructions right here on how to do so (* but they can be easily found ). EA needs to fix their installer to get around this issue.

- Some may be able to work around the cancelled installation issue by ending the BDtS install exe process in task manager (Ctrl + Alt + Delete) when you get to the point of entering the BDtS key. After killing the process, the installer should then continue and ask you for the key again in a different window (enter the key code in this window). After that the installation should complete itself.

Another installation tip from chvonglica:

"For all of you who still have trouble making this install work, try doing this:
1. Right click the downloaded DLC and run it as admin
2. When requested, type in/paste the whole key, like this: 3FLL43UUJTN8W8EX25J3 (and NOT this: 3FLL-43UU-JTN8-W8EX-25J3)
- Not sure if anyone already posted this, but I've spent the whole day trying to figure out why doesn't my game install work. Normaly, I've double clicked the DLC and when asked placed the key in the 4 bracked areas and every time I got a "Install Cancelled" message."

Other common installation issues may be easily resolved by:
1 - Running the installer as administrator
2 - Using Compatibility Mode (Win 7) and/or troubleshooting compatability before (re)installing
3 - Temporarily turning off your firewall during the installation process

If anyone has installation issues and/or resolutions please post them!

For the benefit of others, please include as much detail as possible: What you did, where problems occured, what operating system you are using (i.e. Win XP Pro 32bit, Win 7 Home 64bit, etc.), and what version of ME1 you have (i.e. Steam download, EA Origin download, retail disc etc.). Read through the posts in this thread to see if a resolution or tip that can work for you has been discussed

You may also find answers in the latter part of the already existing but somewhat outdated sticky topic for BDtS. I recommend starting at the last page of that thread since the first year and a half of posts there refer to the old method of getting BDtS.

Have the DLC downloaded already and ready to install.
When they give you the key enter it in right away and see if it works.
I'm guessing they give everyone the same key and there's an activation limit on it. When I enter the key in it said the limit has been reached so I quickly message the support guy I had and had him increase the limit.

They also give me a 15% Origin discount code that excludes pre-orders and new release so kind of useless

Here are some "unofficial" ways to fix installation issues (that I did not want to include in the OP(s):

(A modified version of this might work for Steam users getting the ME1 key to be recognized by the BDtS installer - simply by just adding the ME1 key to your registry [see directions in post - may only have to add ME1 key and none of the other stuff] - read through the whole thread for updates and a handy user-made app!) -

Great tip, and one reason I gave the download link to the installer in the OP. You can try the install with the agent still on Live Chat and if it is invalid/limit reached you can tell them right away and have them up the limit on the code or give you a new one.

i used the universal code then it said that my activation limit was reached so i contacted EA Support they increased my activation limit so i tryed it again whit the universal code still says the limit is reached any help if possible

Which universal code are you talking about? Anyway, you should continue to contact EA support until you get a working code. Try doing what has been suggested above and get a support agent via Live Chat while you have the BDtS installer ready to go. Keep the live chat open while you try the code they give you so you can test it right away - unless of course they give you specific instructions to wait a certain amount of time. If they do tell you to wait a certain amount of time, and you wait a lot longer, then there's a chance the code limit will get used up again (bc other people are using it). In that case.... yep. You'll have to contact support yet again

I don't have problem with install. I have both games on Origin. I just reformat my harddrive so reinstall everything. One of my country forum I read someone write the Origin version contains the BDtS DLC. After downloading from Origin I checked it's directories and really: the files there! But can't see in-game menu or the config tool. I only saw Pinnacle Staion which I bought on the sale.
I contacted support and they gaved me a key for it and a link to download. Seems the download contains the files, but since it's needs a key you have to install it anyway.
But since I use Origin the installer doesn't ask for key, simply installing itself. I have only problem with Steam version.

I'm not exactly sure what your issue is Galvatron - What problem are you having with the Steam version? I'm a little confused because you said in your post that you have both games on Origin. Which games exactly?

It does look like that other post is addressing the same error message, but there could be many different reasons any one error message can come up. You could try contacting your ISP I guess, but that doesn't seem like it would get you far. Power cycling your router and modem can't hurt though!

Another question - Where did you get your ME1 key code? Did you get it through the ME1 configuration utility (for Steam, this launches from the Steam folder in your C drive)?

I'm wondering if even though you have a Steam license, you may still need to have EA allow your license to be used again since this is a reinstall. This issue would come up when EA is checking the key code for ME1 and thinks it's already been installed too many times (especially if you did not actually uninstall ME1 before reformatting your drive). Don't know that this would cause that kind of error message you got, but it's worth contacting EA support about to see if that's an issue, especially since you've tried everything else - I suggest sneaking on to Live Chat via the method I put in the OP here (and keep them on chat while you try to do the install).

Edit - I think I may have mistaken you and thought this was a reinstallation of ME1 and the DLCs. If it's not then the above paragraph shouldn't be an issue - except the last part about getting EA onto Live Chat to problem solve this with you.

Steam users seem to get a lot of the problems installing the DLCs, so tell us if you get any results (and how you got it!).

It might be worth it to try killing it in task manager again (quote from Steam forum):
"When you start the installer and it asks for the cd-key open up task manager and end the process of Bring Down the Sky_code.exe



It will begin the install process only for another box to pop up asking
for the key. Enter the key in this box (I did it without the dashes) and
hit done. It should proceed to install correctly after that without an
issue. It appeared in my Downloadable Content screen in-game along with
my Pinnacle Station."

Edit - One more question - Are you logged on to the Steam client and running it while trying to do the install? If yes, then try the install with Steam logged off. If no, then bring Steam client online and log in. I'm wondering if EA and Steam may either need to correspond to each other, or just the opposite - they might conflict with each other. It might also be helpful (or not!) to have the Origin client running with you signed in while doing the install.

I've already found a solution in......one bay. Hope the fact that I actually bought two copies of Mass Effect (both retail and digital) excuses me.
Seriously, I don't understand why Bioware haven't done what pirates did (since it's *free* DLC), it would save a lot of nervous, both players and tech support.

No, no, no. Sorry that I misinformated you.
When I said that I have problem like that, I meant that the problem was with licence servers, not with the reinstallation - i bought digital copy on Christmas Sale (I've lost my retail one) to replay the game before ME 3.
It seems that the problem occurs when you try to install DLC from Europe, I found several reports of this mistake on russian Bioware community forums. They also didn't find solution.
Yes, I've tried to kill the process and turn on/off Steam.
Overall, it's the first time i have problem with Steam and DLC, all other games' DLCs worked perfectly, including Mass Effect 2.

Thanks for the update. The 3FLL code may come back to life again. It seems they renew allowances periodically. At least we still have 7YVD working right now though
