However I believe the original catalyst for complaints might be the fact that a key fixture of the game ends in a way that the player cannot influence.
So regardless of what you do, this major fixture is going to happen and you're going to get a little peeved.

They're disappointing in many ways, but as always exaggeration runs rampant.

Remember when people raged over Deus Ex HR "Ending buttons"? Bioware didn't get the memo

the epilogue was just terribly written
I think the Epilogue actually makes it worse, if possible.

I remember some people saying that the script had a "happy" ending in it, but it was taken out of the final game.
It did, but that simply wouldn't be dark enough.

Sure some people are upset over small things but few of them were born before 1994.

In the original, you could destroy the reapers and hope dark energy is resolved, or you allow the reapers to fix the dark energy problem through your destruction.
It's eons better than what the endings are now.

As big as a Tom Lehrer fan as i am...Sure some people are upset over small things
I'm going to have to argue that the unavoidable point in all available endings is not a small thing. In fact it's a fairly large thing. Given that what occurs, directly affects a (if not THE) main fixture of the previous titles.

At the end of the day the hardcore Mass Effect fans will be upset and at a uproar.
Everyone else will probably shed manly tears, and call this the best ending in video game history.
At the very least the ending is bold, and unpredictable. It might do many things wrong, but being ballsy and taking a risk isn't one of them.

Yeah, the ME3 endings will make you feel like the hundreds of hours put into ME1 and ME2 were worthless.

I fear quite a few will say, "So... This is my first ME game played. Are all like Deus Ex in the end?"

Repears beaten life everywhere saved, sounds good to me.

Well then I must be one of the few.
I find the ending with the normandy forced, arbitrary, and pointless considering the battle had essentially already been won. Had they exploded the normandy into a reaper I'd have been more satisfied.
It's about the satisfaction of the send-off that makes me unlikely to enjoy this not the fact they had a send-off at all. I do prefer happier endings but If I have to sit through a depressing end at least make it worthwhile and necessary. The Normandy crash is not necessary. It shouldn't have even been near that relay.
As for life everywhere saved, you really don't get why that doesn't satisfy some people? Most people were out to save the normandy crew and the characters they had met along the way, not the galaxy. Most people haven't spent more than 5 minutes talking to the galaxy.
"It's never a tragedy until it hits home". Which is fine if they wanted to kill the peope close to you. Just do it throughout the game, or in a non-arbitrary way at the end. The plot didn't dictate it that's for sure. The plot had been over by then.
But meh. I'll still be going to pick up the game for at least one playthrough. I just won't be satisfied.
