So for those of you who don't know, the original ending to the game went a little something like this (courtesy of In It For The Tank).

Highlight for spoilerz: The Reapers' goal was to find a way to stop the spread of Dark Energy which would eventually consume everything. That's why there was so much foreshadowing about Dark Energy on Haestom in ME2.

The Reapers as a whole were 'nations' of people who had fused together in the most horrific way possible to help find a way to stop the spread of the Dark Energy. The real reason for the Human Reaper was supposed to be the Reapers saving throw because they had run out of time. Humanity in Mass Effect is supposedly unique because of it's genetic diversity (I know, I know) and represented the universe's best chance at stopping Dark Energy's spread.

The original final choice was going to be "Kill the Reapers and put your faith in the races of the galaxy in finding another way to stop the spread with what little time is left" or "Sacrifice humanity, allowing them to be horrifically processed in hopes that the end result will justify the means."

It's completely different now, though. All the Dark Energy foreshadowing in ME2 doesn't really go anywhere anymore if I remember right.

I think this ending would have been much better than what we got. The whole bit about genetic diveristy is kind of dumb, but at least the final choice feels more in line with what Mass Effect is all about. It's not like this is a sunshine-and-rainbows choice either; you're essentially being forced to decide to either preserve the status quo at the cost of possibly ruining things in the long term, or to do something horrific for the greater good.

THIS IS THE KIND OF THING I WANTED TO SEE!

So, I'm officially starting this petition for BioWare to create a completely optional non-canon DLC than can be toggled on and off after downloading to restore the original ending. This benefits everyone. BioWare gets to stick with the ending they decided to do and the fans get a completely non-canon ending that allows them to get what they want.

All of this is assuming that the secret NG+ ending doesn't turn out to be this exact ending. Which would be awesome.

Please add your voice to my plea!

As added support for my argument that the original ending was better:

The original ending had elements of the Paragon/Renegade theme that runs so strongly through the series. In the "destroy the Reapers" uplifting ending, you were putting your faith in the combined efforts of galactic civilization to solve the problem, whereas in the "greater good" downer ending, you were basically submitting to the Reapers and resigning yourself to the assumption that no civilization could ever solve the problem on their own.

I was apart of the first one, it was closed as being "spam". Bioware knows our position whether they chose to act on it is an entirily diffrent matter.

They know that we dislike the current ending, but I want to get this petition out there so they know what to do to fix it.

I really don't see why they wouldn't do this. It can be advertised as a non-canon alternate ending, just to provide an interesting alternative to what we got. I think a lot of people would buy this because it would add more replayability to the game.

Yeah, plus I don't like the thought of playing 'in limbo' just before the final battle. I don't know if it makes sense. Plus with the Normandy crashing on a garden world...

I don't know.

Agreed. The Normandy would be what bothered me the most about the endings if it weren't for the grim choices that all screw you over in some way or another. It's less emotionally satisfying when your ship crashes and the Mass Relays gets blown up no matter what you do. It makes it feel like not much of a choice at all.

If you people want to have a happy sunshine ending then plug your ears and write a fanfic.

I think I made a pretty good case for why this isn't a happy sunshine ending. You're choosing between the short term and the long term. Neither ending is "right" and neither ending is a perfect solution, but it allows the fans to get what they want and it's more emotionally satisfying either way you choose.

It's also boring and uninspired. At least with the current endings there's and element of shock.

You got my vote, I'm still mind boggled on why they even changed it in the first place. I still think heads are gonna roll this week.

WHY would you encourage such behavior from developers? This is not aimed at Bioware if other develops see a market what do you think they would do? Seriously guys?

I don't think it's boring. It's the natural culmination of the preceding events in the series. Throughout Mass Effect, you've been conditioned to believe that you're in control of things. This ending brings that trend to its logical conclusion. You're basically making the most important choice in galactic history, but it's entirely IN YOUR HANDS, whereas with the canon ending things happen that you have no control over.

I sincerely doubt people would purchase alternate ending DLC for any other game than Mass Effect 3. This is a unique series. Who would buy an alternate ending for, say, Halo or Assassin's Creed?

Having said that, I would prefer that this DLC be made available for free, of course.
