I see a lot of Morrigan or Lelianna threads, and about keeping them happy.
I use Alistair because he's a great tank, but his attitude and self-righteousness really make me angry (in a good way). I think he is currently at like +16 for me, and I'm about halfway through the game. Morrigan gets mad when i help pathetic people and such, but overall she's easy to entertain (+100 currently).
But it seems like every choice I make, Alistair seems to have a problem with. I won't list any specifically, due to spoilers, but theyre sensible or the least problematic, and he still spouts his righteously blind garbage. Heck, Lelianna is a darn Chantry priest and is still more sensible than him. At first I was worried about her, but she's forgiving.
Even in my talking with Alistair, it seems like everything I say he is either indifferent to, or it insults him.
I just want to smack that guy.
Btw, i'm not actually complaining about the game, it's like the bad guys in movies that you love to hate. I am more complimenting Bioware on creating a character that pisses me off so much, haha.
Am I the only one who despises Alistair?

Nah, you're not. My friend said he was whiny and annoying. I for one like him, think he's alot of fun and nice to talk to. Morrigan, however... I have a really, really, reeeally hard time to get her to like me. Maybe it's all about personal chemistry.

I feel the same everytime I talk with Alistair I get like -3 so I've finally given up talking to him cuz I'm sick of hearing his attitude at how EVERYTHING I do is wrong
But then again he probably hates me anyway cuz I'ma mage

I dump the guy the first chance I get. Can't stand him at all.

Depending on who I'm roleplaying I love or hate him. My first play through as an elf mage I had a bromance with him, and kidded him a lot good naturedly.
This play through I'm gonig with an elf warrior, and I think he's a wussy baby and tell him every chance I get. I am looking for the first chance to dump him and never take him along unless I am *FORCED* to (another pet peeve).

I could have kicked this guy in the nuts recently. Right from the get-go, he was like "No, no no noooo, I don't want to lead". Then I make a decision he doesn't like and he get's all ****y. Hello? I even gave you a chance to decide. You didn't want it. (to be honest, I'd be sorta baffled if he took me up on that offer and led the party in my stead. I never played an RPG where I am the NPC.
)
But yea... What's with all that whining. You don't get to complain if all you do is sit in the back seat. Overall he's easier to work with if you always find the super good way to do stuff. That's how I usually try to do things anyway because I'm a nice guy. But when you pick the lesser of two evils instead of trying to find a way to do it without touching evil with a 10 foot pole... Well, he throws his hissy fit... -.-
Still, I find him way easier to work with than Morrigan. At least he doesn't outright disapprove whenever I take a quest to make some money or further my cause of gaining allies. And his initial suggestions are actually doable stuff in contrast to what the ****queen suggests.

Alistair was interesting to me at the start, but now he's just an optional plot device. His conversation topics are dry and uninteresting, especially the way he discusses them. I much prefer talking to Wynne, Morrigan, Leliana or even Shayle.
One problem I have with the conversations is that it's hard for me to pick up humor and sarcasm in text. So much relies on body language, and while the characters tend to convey some of that, the player responses don't.
My favorite game in this regard was Starflight 2 which placed an emotion word prior to the spoken text to clue the reader in to the speaker's feelings. Things like (Angry), (Friendly), (Love). As I recall it made communication with the Arla species very enjoyable. Sadly it's not used at all in CRPGs.
I'm more of a numbers guy so sometimes these responses and statements leave me scratching my head as to what might be the best. Thus there's a lot of saving prior to talking to someone and reloading if I didn't get the response I was going for. I don't have that problem at all while talking to someone in person, but in video games it's the norm.

His conversations with Morrigan are the only reason I keep him around as my tank. They are priceless.

I like Alistair and Morrigan both, for different reasons. I don't take Morrigan along much but when I do their interactions are quite entertaining.
I sometimes feel like I'm the only one who has all the party members with enough approval that they get at least one buff out of it, at least based on the discussions I see in the forum.

Strange.
I never get any disapprovals with Alistair but i also never get much Approvals
He seems to not care with any choice i make except for a main story part which will be left unsaid.

Alister is one reason why we need permanent deaths, no knocked out revived after combat. Just cooly cut his throat and be done with him.

I dislike Alistair as well, really annoyed to listen to his whining all the time and gets discarded at the first chance l get and never to be seen again for a long time. Sten on the other hand, is much more me, that char is good, heh.

I think it just depends on your personality and the way you RP your character. For me, virtually everything I did had Morrigan and Sten disapproving (at the start, when I had them in my party) so they started to bug me and I left them at camp. Morrigan I was able to get approval up with gifts, as there are so many things she likes, but for Sten I only found a couple and I never managed to get his sidequest on my first playthrough - he was the only one.
If I play again I'll use a different type of character, take different party members along and choose different dialogue options so I'll get different folks agreeing and disapproving.
Just human nature really! Nobody is universally loved or hated I don't think.

I never got the idea of him being a wuss, merely just lack of self confidence which he got by me telling him stuff wud all be alright
i liked his sarcasm and his personality

His dialogs with Morrigan are good enough reasons to keep him in the party.

Most of the comments complaining about Alistair have been more whiny than Alistair himself.
Go figure.

There are 11 million WoW players. Do you genuinely think we are all alike?
FWIW: 32, female, married, work part-time, casual raider, no whining. And yes, I gamed before WoW even, and will continue to do so afterwards, both on PC and some consoles.

Lots of people don't like him, for the same reason we don't people who act like 14 year olds in RL, they get annoying and aren't worth the time it takes to try and fix them.

"Have YOU ever licked a lamp post in winter?"
I can't do that quote justice but Alistair is my favorite character by far. How can you not love this sarcastic guy? the interactions between him and Wynne absolutely made my game.
Also Laurelinde its best just to ignore those who compare everything to WoW. I was a hardcore raiding tank / leader for the best guild on my server for several months before finally kicking the habit. I still get phone calls from guild mates who just want to say hello. Wouldn't consider myself or any of my clansmates "whiny"... though we did have this one healer... man she could rant. hah, if she hadn't enthralled most of the clan with her 18 year old "charms" I'd have loved to have removed her. Come to think of it.. she wasn't even that great a healer due to her computer being built with sticks and stones.
right.. back to the topic: Alistair rulez!
