I agree that the problem with the kid is that it's hamfisted. I usually play some variant of paragade, so it doesn't bother me that Shepard is finally acting human (in fact, I'm glad that his/her vulnerabilities are finally being explored), but the way they chose to do it is rather trite (and I haven't even gotten to the endings yet). Why this one kid? Shepard has three games worth of horrible experiences to dwell on (and his pre-game history as well), but this one kid is what he dreams about every time he goes to sleep? It's just not very convincing to me and seems like a too obvious attempt to evoke sentiment.
Seriously, why does my renegede Shepard that kills people for fun care about a kid?
