I've never used online dating myself, but I don't think there is any reason why it wouldn't work, paticularly if you are in the same country.

The only thing I have a problem with is when they decide to try skype sex (?). I caught my friend trying that one time it was very akward.

(always meet in a very public place, always let a friend know where you are in case the person ends up being psycho, etc.) Sowwy you had a bad experience, maybe one day you can give it another shot, I've known some people who were really succesful with online dating, it's a gamble of course, but it may pay off!

Just, whatever you do, don't let it turn into American Psycho. Great movie, but would make for a very bad life experience.

Chat or normal social/professional internet usage is better imo. Dating sites seem to be a way to invite all sorts of pressure/problems.

I met my other half of many years (and 3 children) in IRC.

Well never leads to long term relationship...if that's not what you are looking for than go for it.
