Ok to be honest, I thought this thread was about how to fix the face import lol but later it realized it for just for the imports. Now the game should have set everything to default when you installed it. If you have change anything since then, things might be a little messy now.

For me everything worked like a charm when clicking on New Game for ME3 the importME2character was there too. Like I said now changes were made to make it work.

Now for a step by set of what some of the solutions people are saying to do is this

1. go to your C:\\User\\Documents\\BioWare

2. You should see a folder for each of your Mass Effect games
IF THERE IS A FOLDER MISSING you're probably screwed...just saying. That or if you manually change the folder to be place someone where else then go there find it there.

3. Ok were still looking in C:\\User\\Documents\\BioWare....Click on the Mass Effect 2 folder

4.Now from here click on BIOGames

5.Click on Config

6.Click on GamerSettings

7.Scroll down till you see this line.
[SaveGames]
Location=C:\\Users\\(Users Name)\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect\\Save

(Notice how this is says Mass Effect...all is doing is routing you save games from ME1 to ME2 in this location)

8.Copy that WHOLE LINE in step 7!
[SaveGames]
Location=C:\\Users\\(Users Name)\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect\\Save

9.Close window go back to C:\\User\\Documents\\BioWare

10.Click on Mass Effect 3

11.Click on BIOGame

12.Click on Config

13.Click on GamerSettings

14.Under the very last line which should say MPVoiceContinueOnLostFocus=False
click by False so writing course is there. Hit your Enter key twice

15.Paste that line I told you to copy here in step 8. So right click and hit paste or hit CTRL and V at the same time.

16. So you should see again this
[SaveGames]
Location=C:\\Users\\(Users Name)\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect\\Save

17.Now from here all you have to do is add a space and 2 is that line so it reads
[SaveGames]
Location=C:\\Users\\(Users Name)\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save

18.Go to file and hit save!

19.Close window

20.Now go back to C:\\User\\Documents\\BioWare

21.Click on Mass Effect 2

22.Click on Save

23.SELECT ALL THE FILES IN HERE AND COPY THEM. The files should read your characters name.
Example for me it reads like this
Palioxis_31_Soldier_030312
Palioxis_31_Soldier_090212

(all those numbers me is when you created that file so as you see up there 090212 comes out for be on the 9th month..on the 2nd...of 2012)

24.Now go back to C:\\User\\Documents\\BioWare

25.Click on Mass Effect 3

26. Click on Save

27.Right click anywhere in folder and hit paste or hit CRTL and V

28.CLOSE ALL WINDOWS

29.Launch Origins and launch Mass Effect 3

30.Hit New Game and you "should" see an importME2character tab now

31.Pick a save and you "should" see to the right all the important options you made that save game. When your ready hit select at the bottom

32.WARNING!!!! NOW THIS MIGHT FIX YOU IMPORT PROBLEM...BUT IF IT DOESN"T IMPORT YOUR CHARACTERS FACE THAT"S A WHOLE DIFFERENT THING! THUS READ THIS FROM BIOWARE

Will I be able to make changes to my Shepard when I import?
You will be given the option to alter the appearance of Shepard, and you will be able to change class (i.e. Soldier to Adept) as well.
NOTE: Some ME2 saves will not be able to import the face-file of your Shepard. You will need to re-create the appearance when importing the file.

Link to that is this

https://help.ea.com/...o-mass-effect-3

OK I HOPE THIS HELPS and GL!

If there is a folder missing it means that no other Mass Effect game is installed on that computer. That is solved by creating a Mass Effect 2 folder there.

I have come to the conclusion that I MAY NOT have completely finished ME2 and that's why it refuses to import no matter what I try(and I tried every solution here) even though my char is level 32...

Since ME2 is no longer installed on my comp ..I will have to re-install it...

In case it isn't clear, in .../Bioware/Mass Effect 2/Save/ your save games are in folders that correspond to the Character name.

For instance John_12_Adept_190211 Following is a breakdown of what the folder name represents:

The folder name is not arbitrary. It goes like this:

John <-- the name you gave your shep if it wasn't default
12 <-- Two parts, first number and second number
    First: Origin code (1 = Spacer, 2 = Colonist, 3 = Earthborn)
    Second: Notoriaty value (1 = Survivor, 2 = War Hero, 3 = Ruthless)
Adept <-- character role (Soldier, Infiltrator, Adept, Vanguard, Sentinel, Engineer)
190211 <-- date the character was created, in this instance February 19, 2011 (ie ddmmyy)

ME2 used this information for displaying your list of available characters when/if you decided to switch. It has nothing to do with the saves inside which could be completely different. The game didn't seem to even look at those until you chose a career.

So, if you need to/want to have a folder name that accurately reflects the saves inside, now you know how to name the folder.

I've tried all of these that applied and it still doesn't work. I have my Mass Effect 2 save folder still here, since i played the game on the same computer. So i have no idea why ME3 won't read my imports because i finished the game with almost each one.

My ME2 character shows in the Import ME2 Character slot, but when I press Import Character it doesn't seem to do anything. Is this normal, or is there something else I should do?

My Mass Effect 3 gamersettings.ini doesnt have that line. Any idea why that may be, or if this is my problem with imports?

Well from what I see there is a problem with reading probably saves that are imported from ME1, I have downloaded saves from monshael and it works properly, but don't know if it's only ME2 save or ME1 + ME2 saves. Also I haven't change any details on Shepard look, so the problem still exists. I can't play on my own saves which is pretty annoying because I have played ME 1 an ME 2 from the begging because my previous saves where deleted after system reinstallation

Still not working. I'm installing ME2 again to see if the problem is with the save.

Same issue, none of the fixes suggested here have worked.

I have 200 hours in my characters and I can't continue.  Bioware, fix this NOW!!!!

I have all my old Mass Effect games and working save files in their default locations and Mass Effect 3 can't see them even though the Mass Effect 3 folder is sitting right next to my intact, and working, and un-edited, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 folders with all their Save files intact. So even with all that up and running, Mass Effect 3 can't see the Mass Effect 2 characters.

So, I can go play the Mass Effect 2 saved games right now, make a new save, but Mass Effect 3 can't import the character. Playing on Windows 7 Professional 64, logged in as administrator, running/launching as administrator and also launching from Origin page.

I'm getting a sneaky suspicion...who here has DLC and exactly what DLC do you have?

I had all the above, Liara was recognized as working as the Shadow Broker ( Hackette used her intelligence gathering for information) and of course The Arrival had Anderson bringing up the Batarian massacre.

Now, I had played ME1 once in the past and used that save for ME2, then had to reformat but e-mailed myself the ME2 save with ME1 data in it and transfered it to this new iteration. No problems there. The only issue I had was my face wouldn't transfer over so I just had to create a new face.

So I patched ME2 to patch 1.02, latest I could find, made a new character in ME2 from my ME1 character, saved. Started ME3. Nothing. No characters show up.

I'll just wait till Bioware fixes this to play Mass Effect 3. And I want my old character's face is the main thing, so fix that part please.

Mine was not detecting the saves but my issue was due to the fact that I was using windows UAC and elevating my privileges with another user account, when I opened Origin and launched the game from it, that was an administrator on my system. I copied the save games into that users "C:\\Users\\(Users Name)\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save" directory and it detected them without issue.

Still not working for me either.

Ditto, same issue here. New computer, moved entire Mass Effect 2
Directory and Mass Effect 3 isn't showing anything under the import
character selection.

I've tried renaming, editing the ini, not editing the ini, and

Tried renaming & editing the ini, folders, saves and still no luck.

With me, it's not all the saves that won't import... just most of them. The one that will is one I didn't do LotSB.

Updating with other things that have not worked; Tried sending the file to someone who had mass effect 2 installed, they were able to login to my save file, make a new save file and send it, Mass effect 3 is still failing to read even the newly working ME2 save file.

I'm not having any issues recovering my saved games but not being able to import my character is a gamebreaker. I'vre had the same Sheppard for both previous games and don't want to play this with a different Shep. Is there a way to read the settings from the ME2 files and write them into the ME3 files?

I payed a premium for the collector's package and this was my most anticipated game of the year.

I am having the same issues as most here.  I started out not seeing my character at all.  Then I followed the suggestion to cut and paste my character folders into the (User)\\My Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 3\\Save.  That allowed me to see my character when I hit the "ImportME2Character" in the initial screen.  I was able to double click on my save save which seemed to register my class and background.  From there it displayed my character name at the top, but didn't let me select it and hit the "import" button.

I am chatting with Origin customer support right now, and they are completely useless.  The only thing that they know (which I'm sure is written down in a script somewhere) is that both ME2 and ME3 need to be registered with the same account or they won't load.  I am not sure why that matters, but I bought the discs for ME2, and don't think I registered them.  I asked them if buying the discs for ME3 instead of the digital download would help, and they said no.  So basically, they are forcing me to rebuy the discs (I have since lost them) for ME2, reinstall that game, and then register it to my EA account... or Origin... or whatever, and that should solve all my problems.  I am continually amazed at the idiocy I encounter with this company.  This is one of the most basic things they could have gotten right to make this a success, and they blew it.
