Any particular reason why my game creates its "BiowareMass Effect 3" folder in the Origin Games folder? All my settings are default as far as I know and I definitely didn't redirect it at any point (I don't even think you can). I feel like that's the thing causing problems for me.

A) What version of MS Windows are you running?

B) What is the USERPROFILE environment variable set to? You can get this by doing the following:
  1. Start -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
  2. Enter this command: set
  3. In the list of items that print out in the Command Prompt Window, find USERPROFILE near the bottom

That looks perfectly fine. Hmm.....

Take a look at the Origin Content folder... It should have the Mass Effect 3 folder, and in there should be a Data folder.

The Data folder has a file called MassEffect3Config.xml - open the file with Windows Notepad. Near the very top, find the lines that start with this:

        <string name="USERDATA_DIR">${CSIDL_PERSONAL}
        <string name="SAVEDATA_DIR">${USERDATA_DIR}

What do these complete lines look like in your installed copy?

<string name="USERDATA_DIR">${CSIDL_PERSONAL}\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 3</string>
<string name="SAVEDATA_DIR">${USERDATA_DIR}\\Save</string>

I've changed the SaveGame path in the GamerSettings.ini to read the path of my ME2 save file (which is in My Documents>BioWare>etc.)  and when I run ME3 and go to import character, it reads the folders names (John_32_class_Date) but gives a blank description of the ME2 save file. The files aren't corrupt and they're finished games.

That looks like my own config..... nothing seems wrong. I have no explanation for why the save games showing up in the Origin Games folder. That behavior on the part of the game is damn peculiar.

I was freaking out badly too about this issue. I found a solution and could eventually import my char from ME2 (and surprisingly the game kept my facial appearance). I run Vista and the problem was about admin/user account. I realized this when I did not find any ME3 folder under "documents and settings" (user account). I went to admin account and *poof* it was there. At this point (after an hour of swearing) I put my Mass Effect 2 save folder under Admin's documents and settings and it worked just fine. Hope this can help some of you guys. Cheers and kill as many Reapers as you can ;D

Unfortunately, this isn't a solution for me. My User profile is the admin account and there is no generic admin account in Windows 7.

They do. All the threads that have the Bioware logo underneath the title are threads that Bioware devs and moderators have posted in. They just haven't talked to people with import problems except for the Xbox 360 folks and the cloud save fiasco.

Adding the following two lines to GamerSettings in Config folder of BIOgame helped Me 3 detect mass effect 2 save games. Also save game files have to be in their own character folder in mass effect 2 save game folder i.e. C:\\Users\\Arvindna\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save\\Ian_12_Soldier_260110

[SaveGames]
Location=C:\\Users\\(Users Name)\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect\\Save
Location=C:\\Users\\(Users Name)\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save

MOST IMPORTANT

After Completing the Suicide Mission , don't start the game again , just click continue , or else u will need to do another suicide mission & this is how ME3 picks up , it needs to see the last mission completed to get a conclusion of the characters etc

I was having the same problem with it not being able to find my mass effect 2 saves I had done what Palioxis had said a few pages back and it still didn't fix it.

However, I found what I believe to be a solution. Ensure your save folder had the "charactername"_30_"classname"_datecreated folder and make sure it has a "charactername"Shepard.pcsav file. If it doesn't you need to create one with the gibbed save editor.

Mine was a no on both and when I had done those the game found the saves I wanted to use.

I did something totally different , it worked , i used a save game from online & created a file naming structure & renamed the same files in it , ME3 picked it up

anyone interested , download the folder

http://sachinsachani...dept_170212.zip

paste it in your ME2 saves ,

Thank you so much Sachin, this was the only solution that worked for me.

This worked. Thanks Sachin!

I had no characters showing up in the import.  Here is what fixed it for me.  The career I finished the game with had saves beyond the final mission.

1. Find a saved game right before the final mission.
2. Play final mission.
3. When asked to continue or return to main menu, PRESS CONTINUE.
4.  This is critical DO NOT SAVE YOUR GAME after pressing continue.
5. Exit ME2.
6. Fire up ME3 and import your character.

I had saved games beyond the last mission on this career.  For some reason you have to have a fresh final mission kill and NOT save the game right after finishing it.

Serious craptastic error on Bioware's part.

This information helped me as well. My most recent ME2 save games were generated by me going to an earlier save and trying stuff out that I didn't do before, like certain Renegade scenes. ME3 appears to be really picky about what it looks for in the ME2 save game folder. The ME2 savegame that you want to import has to be the most recent save game file, it seems.

I did not have ME2 installed anymore... so I used the ME2 save game editor to check on which of my save games was the most recent after completing the final mission. From appearances, it looked like I had a save game that consisted of my character on the Normandy, very shortly after the final mission was done.

I copied the entire ME2 folder as a precaution, then I removed everything but that one save game I identified using the tool. Now, the ME2 -> ME3 import process worked successfully... FINALLY.

Still lost my character appearance though. PFFT!

Tried doing the below, still didn't work.  Going to try to wipe all other saves and get rid of other character's save folders.  And then if that doesn't work, I'll try it with only the Autosave or with only the save after the Continue.

YES! finally got it to work by downloading the folder from the link provided earlier in this thread and just copying everything over (and leaving the kyleshepard.pcsav file).
