When I try to purchase runes they disappear, though my money is taken. when I pick up runes, they also disappear. I have a phantom character (five appear though only four can be controlled) I don't care about the phantom character, but I would like to work with runes. I don't know that I can get Wade to make the shield since I can't get the rune he'll need. I have the 1.05 patch installed

In Awakenings you can purchase only novice level runes of certain types.
Higher level runes need to be crafted by a member of your team. So I suppose I am wondering if you are purchasing tracings and believing them to be the rune itself?
If you have a team member with Runecrafting abilities, that character can use the tracing -- along with all the necessary supplies (etching agent, etc.) -- to create higher level runes from lower level runes.
Regarding the phantom, I have no idea what causes that.

i should have said purchasing tracings. I see that what I purchase reappears in the shopkeepers stock, but at the time, I hear the sound of the gold being taken, and have less of it.

I shut down game and rebooted, and still have less gold and no tracings. One of my characters has top level runecrafting, so she could use these to craft runes. Funny that I can't pick them up when in chests, either. Oh well... I suppose I'll have to play without this part.

Which rune tracings are you buying?
If you already have the tracing (which is also a sort of recipe on how to make the rune) then purchasing another of the same kind will not result in you having two identical tracings. Buying a tracing/recipe you already have will likely be about the same as throwing money away.

One other thought:
When you purchase a rune tracing or pick up a rune tracing you find in your travels, it is added to the list of runes the runecrafter can make. It does not appear as an item in the team inventory.
The only way to see what tracings you have is to control the character with runecrafting abilities and to activate that character to craft a rune. There then should appear a list of all the possible runes that the character can craft.
