The local priest used to give me special blessings every weekend. I don't think it helped my character at all!

Nope.

In game the blessings do nothing, much like everywhere else.

Look what good it did to the *insert spoiler part here that most people who played it would know*

I guess it'd be unfair to make the Chantry blessings do anything since it's a largely human religeon and wouldn't fit with roleplaying Dwarven or Elven characters. it's bad enough that the priests criticise the Warden's for accepting us 'heathens'

You shouldn't expect a blessing to do anything, HOWEVER.....

Giving 5 gold to the reverend mother should of somehow shown to of helped the people of lothering.

Giving out 5 gold to help people deserves a cutscene eventually showing how it helped.

Also we should have the option of destroying the mages collective for abandoing the chantry. These mages don't realize their power and why the chantry & templars are needed.

I'm not sure if 5 gold is really going to help the people of Lothering from getting slaughtered by Darkspawn (=

The designers created a world where religion is realistic, rather than the way D&D handles it. Blessings do nothing. No holy clerics running around with god-granted powers. No tangible proof of dieties of any kind. But still lots of people who worship faithfully.

The blessings, they do nothing! Where is your god now?

Blessings don't do anything in the game, but they can and *do* in real life as a form of morale.

Double quoted for truth, for having been demonstrated by actual tests, and for general wisdom.

When my fiance' was playing through the game she said (very light spoiler ahead) that before the first battle of Redcliffe, she went into the chantry as the militia was complaining that they weren't being given any kind of holy aid from the chantry. When she went in, supposedly, the priestess herself then mentioned that she had tried to explain to them that she couldn't give them any kind of blessing of holy power, only comfort.

If that's what the character actually said, I have to say that she will be the first religious character in any game that I've had any kind of respect for in along time.

All in all, I love the way they set up the religions in this game. The chantry with all their oppression, blunder, and self-righteous bs, but with just enough circumstance (a world that has felt the pain of blood mages) to humanize them.

It does the same as real life religion. Gives you false hope and a delusional view on reality based on the lies that are fed to you by the people that seek to control you.

The FSM does not seek to control us, he simply guides us with his noodly appendages.

Also Quoted for Truth but perhaps there is a less judgemental way of getting across the same sentiment in an open forum?

After all, the majority of people who have lived through human civilization do fall under the description we lay down - and if I had to underline a relevant characteristic of people in earlier eras, it would be the progress made, not the supernatural analogies they tended to consider literally.

As someone involved in science, for example, I would hope future generations would focus on what progress I put forward, not on some model I may have that may turn out (to use Einstein's terminology on theistic supernaturalism) to be naive in hindsight.

Yes, the atheists just had to raise their voice eh? Give it a rest. Atheists can't stand their ground in a debate but this is a game forum. Take your disdain for religion to a different forum please.

To have a productive debate on a matter requires some evidence that the subject of interest actually exists.

Just because youre athiest trash doesn't mean you have to push it on other people. Its funny, when religious people try to advance religion, its a horrible thing. When athiests try to advance athiesm, its all good.

The "funny" thing is.

When atheists try to advance atheism it's all good because at best it usually results in the advancement of real-world science, clarity of thought and universal understanding of tangible truths and at worst is mildly insulting in a verbal way.

When religious people people try to advance religion it's a horrible thing because at best it involves brainwashing, enforced conformity and stifling of expression and at worst it usually involves thumbscrews, boiling oil, meathooks, fire and ropes.

Lolz

That's all i'm saying, i don't like to argue with the insane, it's un-productive to say the least.

I think its hilarious when athiests assume they are productive. You probably didn't know, but the vast majority of the greatest scientists in history were religious.

Speechless?

Being a pragmatic I can't say one way or the other which is true regarding religion. I can say what *I* believe, which is that there is no God.

But I can NOT say "You are wrong, there is no God" simple because I have no proof, just as they don't have any. So be respectful of personal beliefs and don't tell anyone else how to believe, just let it be known what YOU believe.
