So, it seems that most sidequests have a hidden timer. The game never tells you that. So, if you just accumulate them, you will end up failing most of them.

How do you feel about hidden timers and sidequests you can't control?

Here are a few choice quotes:

Not really an issue. It just a bit of weirdness that, now forwarned, you won't run into half as much. But basically many sidequests are given out by very brief dialogue quips as you are exploring places like the citadel. But you need to do them and not delay because many can timeout. But there is not a good clear indicator of the time you have to do it.

For example I missed one about investigating a military death. I found it, went back to my ship had 1-2 cut-scenes but no travel then went back to the planet and the timer had already timed out. Even though there was no warning.

On some there is MUCH more time.

Basically if you get a sidequest, might as well do it asap instead of collecting them. That's my advice. But that's because the citadel can flood you with them and it can insane quick and you can start failing them in a row if you are trying to do one, it fails but you're in another section or area and if you don't rush to do the other it fails in a cascade. I got unlucky. Most people will probably fail a couple or perhaps a bunch. Luck of the draw a bit.

Does it only start the timer once you aquire, or can quests open and close without you ever having knowledge of them.

Oh, this blows. I hate time limits.

But I'll just have to have 3 save games I guess.

From all I've seen there are only a handful of timed missions, I don't know where you're getting this "most of them" from...

That is total BS! I heard something like this, but wasn't sure if people were referring to simply moving too far in the story.

Actual timers? Grrrrrrr

There is a reason many of us accumulate side quests and do them all at once; We don't want to run around all over the place, might as well bunch them up and do them together once we get in the area that contains objectives of those quests. This blows. I hate running back and forth.

This... wow... it really sucks. I thought it would be tied to progress in the plot.

On the whole, I'm not a fan of timed missions. However, not having played yet I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for now because:

1) There are often complaints that games which supposedly have a sense of urgency, don't in fact transmit that sense of urgency because the player can just wander around aimlessly for as long as they like before doing quests. Impending Reaper invasion is kind of urgent, so it makes sense for there to be a time limit of a sort.

2) It also depends on the mission. If it's 'go and get me a sandwich', then a timer is stupid and arbitrary and unnecessary. If it's 'my son is being held hostage, and they're going to kill him in 5 minutes' then a timer makes perfect sense.

Heh, reminds me of Baldur's Gate when your companions would flip out and leave if you ignored their sidequest.

I think that was a bad move putting them in the game as timed, because I think people would get more mileage out of the game being able to do all the quest at their speed, then completing 1 and failing 3. I hope that there isn't many of these timed quest or at least it says that you only have a little bit of time to complete it.

"Shepard, what's wrong with you! You promised to save my boy!"

"I tried to. He was dead when I got there."

"Of course he was! I have video footage of you standing in the same spot for a half hour, then walking into a wall for 10 minutes, running in circles like a god damn dog, and finally chatting up every single person on the way to the location you encountered. It took you 5 HOURS to get there!"

"You said 5. I did 5. Get over it.

lol, i think its actually pretty cool, and makes a lot of sense. Im so tired of RPG's that try to build a sense of drama by the world/galaxy coming to an end, and you have to save it, but it will wait for you to go explore the corner of the map and do a few fetch quests first. Id rather feel the sense of urgency to complete quests so i can focus on the main objective.

If that is true, that absolutely sucks!

There has to be some indication that a time critical quest is actually time critical, given the long history of Bioware games where you consistenlty have had side quests that you could delay as long as you wanted.

If you have to just guess whether, and how long you can wait before doing a side quest and still succeed, that means that you won't dare to talk to most of the people you see, if you already have a side quest to do, for the fear of them offering you another quest, and you failing it while doing the first one.
