Okay, I have talked to a lot of people in my day to day about the first two mass effect games. Most people love the series as a whole but many people Ive talked to don't agree with my preferance for ME2. This post is about why I prefer the game.

Note: This is not a flame post, I greatly respect Bioware and this franchise, Im just stating what I think about individual elements of an overall outstanding series. I welcome debate from those of differing opinions, but ask you keep it civel.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Mass Effect 1 has a great story, but over the years ive noticed that this story is all but carrying really poor gameplay.
Its does a great job carrying this gameplay (It took me years to notice the GAME part of this game was bad because the story was so well done.)

Things ME1 didnt do well:

-All the missions have a really cool story broken up by boring levels and mediocre shooting gameplay

-Pinnicle Station DLC just an arena, its not all that enjoyable. I play it for the off chance something will unlock from it in ME3

-Bring Down the Sky DLC, like the vanilla game, has a cool story broken up by repetitive boring shooter\\Mako segments

-All the classes play the same

-Normandy SR1 is horribly designed (That darn Cargo Elevator can rot in Frozen Heck on Alchera!!)

-Inventory UI is terrible. Example: The fact that there is not a button to "Convert everything into Omni Gel with one click" is not good. idk about you guys but having to waste 20 minutes turning 50 "Onyx I armors" and 80 "Kessler I Pistols" into snot is not fun for me

-Wilderness Planet Assignments amount to driving the Mako in a straight line for 5 minutes, then shooting up the same two cookie cutter dungeons with the same mobs in them. Your reward is a text box and more clutter for you to waste time converting to Omni-Snot.

(Again there are some cool stories behind a lot of these assignments, but from a pure gameplay standpoint... just bad)

-Shooting gameplay is mediocre. Again most of the classes play almost exactly the same with a few slightly differant powers and weapon choices, all the weapons feel the same.

-Aiming the Mako's main gun on anything but a completely flat plane is an exercise in futility
(Bioware is bad at Vehicles, sorry guys, I love ya, but you really don't do vehicles very well)

Things ME1 did right

-Dialog Wheel, best thing to happen to RPGs in a while. Fully voiced main character
is something that really made the game special for me

-Save Import system (Only reason I still have this game installed)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now Mass Effect 2, from a story standpoint it cannot stand up to ME1. I still think the ME2 story is pretty darn good. They do give the player a good reason why their Shep MUST work with Cerberus. Shep Can't do it alone and  the Counsel and Alliance won't help. Ive heard some people say that "Shep has a ship he can just go to all the places and pick up the squad" The flaw with this is the Illusive man provides Shep with ALL intel. The only reason he knows Mordin is on Omega is because his Cerberus Dossier says he is. The only reason Shep makes it to Horizon before its completely gone is because the Illusive man caught the intel. But back on track, yes ME2's story (while great) isn't nearly as compelling as ME1.

In terms of Gameplay it surpasses it in almost every way, and fixes most of what was wrong with the original

Things ME2 did right:

-Each mission, while containing a lot of combat, feels like your in a differant tactical situation.
The first game recycled the same encounter for almost every fight. In ME2 you dont see a siege fight like the Archangel recruitment mission again in the game. Things like the Haestrom Sun on Tali's recruitment, The Biotic Toxins on Samara's recruitment, and the rigged floors on Legion's Loyelty, all throw in new and entertaining tactical edges for you to master.

-While there are some trash DLCs (Cough Firewalker Cough) The core five (Zaeed, Kasumi, Shadowbroker, Overlord, and Arrival) were all great fun, contributed to the story of ME2 and ME as a whole, and provided a lot of lore candy for us to absorb while we waited for ME3. Plus Zaeed and Liara are my two favorite characters :D

-Each class feels very differant this time around, each has its own special power, its limited on what weapons it can even equip, and is well rounded to fit a specific playstyle.

-Each weapon is unique, there are no two assault rifles that fire the same way. There are fewer weapons yes, but each has tactical pros and consand can be switched out depending on what the mission requires.

-Normandy SR2 is leagues better in the level design department. Its bigger, but its layout is much more intuitive and Shepard can even customize his or her cabin to his or her liking.

Things ME2 didnt do well:

- Planet Scanning; I think we can all agree this was no fun. Incredibly tedious, but also incredibly nessessary

-Firewalker: This DLC was just a linear tank track and an excuse to add a vehicle. Bioware should have implemented it into exsisting levels and assignments instead of throwing together a halfhearted series of assignments with a vague story.

-Dialog: There was a lot of companions in this game which was nice, but they didnt have much to say. Archangel for example has all of three topics to talk to him about throughout the whole game. One when you get him, one when his loyelty mission occurs, and one after his loyelty mission, plus a fourth if you romance him. Thats not much dialog.

-Hammerhead controls much better than the Mako, but is insanely squishy.
On insanity you can shoot 20 missles into an enemy before it dies but a few machiene gun rounds can down your armored tank. Also, I would have liked the option to save onboard instead of having to restart the WHOLE mission when I die.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Again, this is why I prefer Mass Effect 2 to Mass Effect 1. You may be of a differant opinion and I would welcome your feedback or debates.

Mass Effect 1 has a beautiful story, but is lacking in Gameplay
Mass Effect 2 has a a lesser story than 1 but has far suppierior gameplay.

Edit: Fixed a bunch of formatting Issues
