Is it really a good idea to list everyone who is online?

Currently the massive list of people on the "What's new" page is horribly unneccessary.

While the feature works when the connumity is only a few dozen members, listing (currently) hundreds of names, potentially thousands in the future, just because they're online seems awfully redundant.  What use is the information meant to be layed out like that?  All it does is elongate the page and ends up causing more uneccessary queries levelled at the server.  Mearly having a list of your friends who are online, or group members would be enough, and maybe a general statistic listing actual numbers of present people rather than every individuals name would be enough, perhaps with a seperate page listing members who are online or not.

I definitely support this. 1500 users right now and it just goes on forever. There's really no need for it whatsoever.

No, but we didn't run into that problem during testing. :) A fix is already on the way for it, to trim the list to a sane number.

Perhaps just BioWarians + BioMods, + my groups + my friends online? In other words the people I might be interested in seeing. And then limited to a sane number for those people that are unreasonably popular.

I wouldn't even include members of My Groups. If you like them well enough, they'll be friends anyways, otherwise it doesn't seem helpful.

Not necessarily. One of the setting of groups is to allow people to invite their friends. Those friends will in turn invite their friends and so on. Unless you religiously friends everyone who joins every group you are a member of then you are going to end up working/chatting/etc. with people who you have no direct connection with.

Of course if it was a profile setting you could have the choice to include group members or not!

We've deployed a fix for this - the list now crops to 20 randomly selected users rather than getting gigantic.

It should only show the BT1 members, who else is there? Posted Image

I assume this just a temp work around?  If so what are you planning to replace it with?

to save database load they should just hardcode it to sunjammer and jesse. It would be right most of the time...
