I had this exact same issue with Mass Effect 2 recently when I tried to finish up my old save games in order to be able to use them for Mass Effect 3, and now I am having it with Mass Effect 3 as well.
When I first ran Mass Effect 2 on my PC, I was running Windows Vista, and everything worked fine. I have since changed to Windows 7 (a complete re-install, not an upgrade). Nothing has changed on my PC hardware wise other than the NIC, which should have no effect on how the game runs. When I first had the issue with Mass Effect 2, I updated all my drivers, paying special attention to my graphics card (Nvidia Geforce 9600). When that didn't work, I dug around on Google until I could find the EA/Bioware tech support number, and spent about 2 hours working with one of their people trying every fix they could come up with. Nothing worked. The only thing I did not try was completely re-installing Windows, which I did not bother doing since I got the game working on my laptop and was able to transfer over my save files and work on finishing them up there. I figured Bioware and EA would fix the issue in the new game. Unfortunately not.
Initially, my problem was Origin would stop working, but I removed the in-game interface and that fixed that. Once I restarted the game after fixing that, I started getting the "Mass Effect 3 has stopped working" error after about 15-20 minutes of game play, exactly as I had in Mass Effect 2. There seems to be no one thing causing this. It happens during talking segments, it happens when the game is just left sitting there, there seems to be no one single factor in this. I see only two possible fixes left at this point:
1. Completely re-install Windows 7 and hope that whatever the problem was is somehow corrected.
2. Start a new Mass Effect 2 save from scratch and see if for some reason the old save files are the issue (doubtful, since they run just fine on my laptop, which is also running Windows 7).
If anyone has any suggestions about anything I have not tried, I would greatly appreciate it.
