Looking at the reviews on Metacritic, I don't think it's a stretch to say that it would have gotten better reviews if it didn't have multiplayer at all (and nothing else was changed), and if the advertising didn't target new players. That seems to be the complaint - that the multiplayer is nothing particularly special, and that new players won't get as much out of it as old players.
Which is obviously a bit strange, because you'd figure that a game that would get, say, a 9.5 if it didn't have multiplayer at all shouldn't be getting a 9.0 or 8.5 because it has multiplayer, but the multiplayer is only ok. Then again, there's something to be said for grading games according to what they attempt to do rather than what they are anyway... but I dunno.
I'm not getting that at all. Most reviews I've read actually RAISED there score because of how enjoyable they found the mp. Even those who didn't care for the mp, admitted it wasn't bad in the least.
Most of the low scores are mostly due to the fact that ME3 isn't a good stepping off point for newcomers, and the fact it's more of the same.
