Yeah I have the exact problem. Whena  lightsource is behind a character. Their entire face is covered by shadow. All I can see is the eyes.

Ditto here, and I've tried tweaking all settings I can think of.

I had dynamic shadows off. I turned em back on not sure if It is fixed or not. It seems like it might be better though.

I've done dynamic shadows on and off, and went into the ME3 Config to set some things there and no change....well, at least no changes for the better.

Same issue here. This is my only problem with the PC version so far. Enabling dynamic shadows helps in some cases, doesn't do anything in others. Adjusting the number of cinematic lights doesn't do anything either.

Bah...

I don't think is the drivers problems, many people are having the same problem, even with all drivers update!
I play alot games and all those games im playing run just fine.... hell even RAGE game run great in my computer, is only with ME3 graphs/shadows I'm having problems!!!

Given that most players have different video cards (and it helps to mention them when discussing video problems), the problem is likely elsewhere. The source may be your monitor/TV, not your video card or the game.

Most monitors and digital televisions these days have "enhanced/dynamic contrast" settings. My 1080p Vizio does, and when the screen image being sent over the HDMI cable is mostly dark - due to shadows or backgrounds - the screen also dims to fit with the "mood lighting" of the screen image. Check your screen menus (or manuals); that may help.

I had this exact same issue in ME2. Tried all the lighting settings and disabled DepthofField to no avail. Disabling depth of field does "fix" the issue but it washes all the lighting out to do it thus changing the way everything looks so that ones unacceptable. Changing the cinematic lights, AF and the harmonic light settings didn't change anything for me. I don't think it's the monitor. I played ME2 on an older flat screen and on a new 1080p monitor and had the same problem on both.

Here is what the game looks like with depth of field off:

Here is what it looks like with it on:

The only way I could lighten things up and keep the depth of field in ME2 was to manually edit the shader file as noted in this thread:

http://social.biowar.../index/797393/3

I bet it would work in ME3 as well but I can't find this file in the ME3 directory. Has anyone else tried this looking for this for ME3?

Anyone else had any luck with this?

Where exactly did you find the shader controls in the ME3 folder? They arent allocated like ME2, and I haven't been able to find it myself

If you read my post above yours you'll see I couldn't find them either. What Alora is referring to however is a line in the gamersettings.ini file. That is actually in the same place as ME2.

[drive letter]:\\My Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 3\\BIOGame\\Config\\GamerSettings.ini

Just add/edit the line: DepthOfField=False.

Look at the screenshots in my post above however to see how it may change your game visuals. It's a trade off. To big a trade off for me but some don't seem to mind. HTH.

I'll have to try this...but what really pisses me off is that these threads are two years old...and still the problem?

BTW, my ME2 was perfect....so was the ME3 demo... so something else is going on...

It might be that there is a lack of control over some of the graphics settings - they are either on or off - though in the .ini file, they can be adjusted.

I'll need to contact support for this one.

Thanks for the links to those fixes...

DepthOfField=False works but it actually looks worse in the end, at least for me...

So... I guess no one has been able to gleam any information about finding/extracting/editing/whatever ME3 shader files like you could do with ME2?

I really hope something can be done about this. Like others have said this affects some areas more than others and some not at all. In some places however, it is really, really dark; basically black and that makes the game look pretty whonky.

As I stated above the DepthOfField "fix" is poor as it washes the game out but more than that it removes the Mass Effect visual style.

Yeah turning DoF off works, but the game loses a lot of its 'shiny' along with it.

OP's Screenie is about what i get (maybe a bit darker) and some of the darker levels look almost vomit worthy. Fiddling with Monitor brightness/contrast does not help. Nor does in-game brightness settings if it matters i cannot see the '7' in the white box until game brightness at -5 (only barely as well) and the 'N' disappears.

Would like some kind of fix, if anyone knows of one.

Wow. Didn't realise it's pretty buggy (Thank god not nearly as buggy as %#$%@ BF3) but I'm gonna just avoid campaign altogether now til they patch these tiny issues AND RELEASE THE HIGH RES PACK. (Hopefully soon though, cause graphics are pretty.......... un-pretty imo)

Edit: But then again I have been playing a Heavily modded Skyrim that looks like this:

This is not only related to the shadows, these are 16 bit colors instead of 32 bit. Here the thread already discussing it:

Lauretta, did you turn off the depth of field or did you per chance manage to change the shader value?

I turn off the depth of field ;)
DephtOfField  True img221.imageshack.us/img221/2758/shepard1.jpg
DeptOfField False  img845.imageshack.us/img845/4793/shepard2.jpg

I know is not perfect but is very  better for my liking while Bioware FIX it (hope..........)
