Hi everyone

We are aware that some players are having issues importing the faces of characters from Mass Effect 1 or Mass Effect 2 into Mass Effect 3. The issue is likely in how faces were detected when imported from Mass Effect 1 into Mass Effect 2, and we’re working on the best way to correct it for affected players.

As our teams work hard to address the importing of face codes we would like to call out a fan made tool that may be able to help PC users in the short term:
Mass Effect Tools

And detailed instruction from a fan on how to use them here.

Edit: Update March 9
Hi Everyone.

We want to keep everyone up to date on this issue as we know how strongly many you feel about this. I will continue to update this thread as we have more information.

We have determined that faces importing incorrectly is an error with how codes were detected when transferred from Mass Effect 1 into Mass Effect 2 and then on into Mass Effect 3 or importing a Mass Effect 2 saved game with New Game +. The Mass Effect team continues to investigate fixes for these issues and they are top priority concerns for
everyone here.

Again, when we have more news, we will let everyone know. Thanks again for your patience.

Edit: Update March 21

Ok, I have what I hope is some good news.

We have fixed the issue of faces not correctly importing into Mass Effect 3. It will be included as part of the next Mass Effect 3 patch.

The not completely good news is that I do not yet have a confirmed date for when the patch will be available. A new patch gets heavily tested by BioWare, EA, Microsoft and Sony before it can be released to the public. We all want to be sure that it fixes the issues it is supposed to fix and doesn't start any new issues (this is called testing or certification testing ). If a patch fails during testing, it is sent back, fixed again and retested until it passes. Then it is released to gamers. Until we know that the patch has passed certification testing, I don't want to give even a rough idea of the date, to prevent disappointment should it need further testing.

So I'm sorry I don't have the full answer you all want and are waiting for yet. When I can give you the date when the patch will be available I will.

Hi everyone,

We DO understand your frustration. Just please make sure not to direct your frustration towards other forum members instead of the actual problem, stay civil and constructive at all times. Thank you!

Perhaps we should vent our frustration at 'community coordinators' who tell us they 'understand', then boss us about instead of providing us with the information we need.

As far as understanding goes, how many people at Bioware haven't played Mass Effect 3 because they can't use their Shepard's face?

And if the patch is ALREADY MADE and going through CERTIFICATION then why won't you tell us HOW YOU FIXED IT and WHAT YOU FIXED?

I LAUGH when moderators tell us to be 'civil and constructive' because EA and Bioware's attitude to their customers is ANYTHING but.

PATRONISING is the word I would use.

Hi, sorry it took me over the weekend to come back to this thread, had to do some house work.

Well, I'm fine with you venting your frustration but TO me and not AT me as we're designated to convey your feelings and opinions to those who make the final decisions. We just don't want you to chomp at each other's throats as, believe it or not we genuinely care about our fans getting along at least on a humane and civil level. Community Managers and Coordinators always think consumer and fans first, that's our job and usually why we sought to work in the industry in these roles. For me personally that's 100% true.

I do hope you understand that we're not wanting or trying to boss you around, if we're coming across as such than perhaps we need to take a look at how we construct our forum posts. I can tell you that we're definitely not intending to do so and personally I'll make sure to not come across as imposing. With the digression that we're all following the forum rules of course.

There are a lot of components to a patch. Even if we would be a very small studio where the same people would publish and certify, it's still very tough to be extremely detailed about dates and content as any small little variable might change in the last minute and the patch will have to be changed or even reverted so it's proper to always wait until 100% certain before publishing officially. Especially so as Mass Effect 3 is cross-platform and several different outlets are involved.

That said I know the involved studio folk are working as hard as they can to deploy this patch as soon as possible. Thanks for reading!

I understand that you want to know more. But us caring about our fans and me having more information are two quite different things. I care so I take time to answer with the information and knowledge that I have available as you can read in my previous post.

And honest truth is that I don't have more information nor would I be authorized to answer specific questions until all the components involved are 100% guaranteed. '

I hope you find this answer at least acceptable for now.

I hear you and I know you are not attacking me and thus I am answering to my best extent :)

However as stated; there are too many teams and segments involved and as Community we're not responsible for compiling the top down information which needs to be done before it can be officially released.

So all this needs to be done before it's conveyed for public release as otherwise it would not be 100% correct. Even if I would ask my boss or all my bosses that specific question, they won't have the information either as we would still have to wait for say a certain certification or legal clearance.

If I had the answer today, I would convey it. But as I don't have it I cannot answer or give you any estimates as that would only dilute the actual facts. There is no reason for us to hold out on information about possible bug resolves WHEN we have it and it will be presented to you as soon as humanly possible and 100% set in stone.

That would be great however I believe there are legal issues preventing information flow until a patch is ready for deployment, as 3rd party companies (such as platform specific manufacturers) are involved in the deployment and certification process.

Simply put; I believe we can't actually legally give out exact information regarding software updates that affects the consumers of the 3rd party companies, until going through certification. This as it might change several times. We can say "this was fixed" as it's the main component and purpose of a patch but we can't give details until completely ready.

When it comes to a time frame for deployment, I'm sure we'll have more info for you soon however in this moment I can't help you further unfortunately.

@MetzgerGeorg I'm sorry, I believe I missed or misread that question.

I'm not saying "classified" however we may be prohibited to certain extents to disclose details until finished. Also once we do and we're ready to publish you will probably hear it from Chris or another one of my superiors before me.

I really don't have the details you are asking for regardless, sorry. I'm also sorry you feel disappointed and I understand it.

I don't have any information on the status of this patch nor do I have the specifics when it comes to Mass Effect 3 patches in general, just want to make that clear. I don't work out of the studio, I'm in the Nordics.

Speaking hypothetically from previous similar situations with other developers it took somewhere around a minimum of 2 weeks from requesting approval. But please again understand that this does not pertain to Mass Effect 3 or BioWare in any way. You will still hear any solid news from Chris or his peers on these forums first.

Hello again,

No Mr. Cat has not left the building but being on GMT+1, I am not at the office during the most busy US hours and had to tend to the family a bit. I'm usually on anyway but I couldn't last night unfortunately.

I want to clear a few things up. Firstly I don't work OUT OF BioWare Austin or Edmonton but I am just as much a full time employee nonetheless. My actual duties do not include these forums but I chose to ask for permission to talk to you as I believe it's needed. In fact my prime tasks involve Nordics only but I care about all fans so I'm here on my own accord.

I don't expect my presence to make your frustration regarding this problem and how you feel you been treated to magicially disappear, nor am I feeding you something that I don't genuinely believe. You are very much entitled to voicing your opinions and you should not be moderated for it as long as it's not personal attacks or trolling towards BioWare staff members.

I do however, in the situation we're in hope that you can see that we are actually working on issues and that we hear you. Everything said here is compiled and conveyed to the correct people, both at EA and BioWare.
I know that it might not always seem that any of us are around, especially with a perceived "silence" when there's no post from BioWare staff for X amount of time. But we are and we do. Also this is something I CAN affect and thus I'm doing my best to affect it.

Now I can't talk specifically why this error was in the live game, simple reason is that I wasn't part of the process. I know how irritating it can be though, I have friends who are affected. I've been lucky as I run PC stock MaleShep but it doesn't lessen my empathy for the need for a fix. I acknowledge it fully.

Good morning all,

I'm very sorry that this is dragging on and that we don't have any new information for you at this point. I wish we did. As mentioned I don't expect your frustration to simply go away because I post this and you are still entitled to voice your opinion until we can provide a solution.

When we DO have more information, we will make sure to deliver it.

Just want to echo what Lion has been saying, we have no update right now but we're absolutely working on this as priority. As has been stated before we've fixed the issue and as soon as it's passed QA tests by our own BioWare team, Microsoft and Sony it will be released to you. This is called "certification time" and isn't 100% under our control on how fast it can be deployed.

Now, if I were you I wouldn't care for the reasoning behind the delay, I would just want to know that people are working on it and that it is coming. It is. When? Unknown at this time. Not the best answer, believe me I know.

I'm sure Chris will blast out the announcement as soon as we know more.

Once again we understand what a pain this is, and are doing our upmost on getting the patch to you as soon as possible.
