So after years of waiting, I broke down last night. Manually put in my ME2 adjusted code and tediously adjusted sliders in the CC until I got my Shepard to a point where he was as close to my ME1 Shepard as he can possibly get. I noticed small differences but otherwise he was my Shepard. I hit "accept" with much trepidation but some small measure of hope and got...well... basically a bug-eyed, ghost-white bizarro version of my Shepard in the opening cut scene. And I immediately stopped again and resolved to go back to waiting for the patch.
For the record, I am absolutely not "that gamer" - I don't usually post in forums, think console wars are stupid (I love both), don't play CoD but happy as hell that others enjoy it as much as they do, and I don't get worked up about 90% of the things we see on message boards. I'm the guy that admits to simultaneously enjoying and being disappointed by Dragon Age II. Defended the "From Ashes" DLC as something special for those willing to spend for the Collector's Edition (though that's another whole issue now). But this...this is the most unacceptable thing I've seen on a game launch in some time. Far worse than Skyrim's bugs. My wife's Shepard is completely lost. ME2 face code produces something unrecognizable to either of us. Over one hour of moving sliders back and forth in every possible increment - the assets just aren't there. ME1 and 2 are the only games I've ever been able to get her to love - what are you saying to someone like her who's not even a rabid gamer? Think she'll be lining up for your next product after this?
I'm not ready to demand for money back or boycott Bioware, but I totally get and support those who feel that way. This is a CORE FEATURE of this series and to screw it up in a way that hurts your most loyal fans - the people who've been there since day one and have had ME3's release date blocked off on their calendars for years now - is a HUGE slap in the face. Every day that goes by without an updated ETA, advice on how a fix might affect those who've already started, word on if there's even any way possible to get our actual Shepard's back just kills more anticipation for the game. The token coverage of the issue on game sites seems absurd. This can't be a small population of affected gamers, so why does it seem like it's being treated as a fringe issue? I can only hope that with GDC done, we'll see more coverage. Until Bioware/EA is questioned on this in public forums like IGN and G4 and the like, they're really under no pressure to get this done.
I'm counting on you, Bioware, to have enough pride in your product and enough loyalty to your longest-running fans to get this fixed immediately with regular updates on your progress. This is ridiculous and unfair and you know it. Show us you're still that company we trusted and respected. We did our part and supported you. Your turn.

Bioware is dead to me. No Drew, complete disregard for the original audience and intent of the series, EA's money grubbing fingers leaving filthy fingerprints everywhere... I just want to play the game and find out what happens, but I want to do it with the ugly Shepard that I watched blaze a trail across the galaxy twice over.

It doesn't help that every man and his dog on the internet is saying that the ending is garbage anyway.

I'm done. Despite my best efforts I just can't muster the enthusiasm to play without my Shep.

I'll wait and play something else. Hopefully it gets fixed. It's a massive kick in the teeth.

Hi everybody, I'm from Italy and I would like to share my experience. At first my attitude were on the "infuriated" side, about the whole face-thing. Then out of desperation I used Mass Effect 2 (i play on a Xbox) as an identikit device, to painstakingly reproduce the next best Shepard (with a code face) from my Mass Effect 1 Shepard, without a code. The results were satisfying at about 85-90%, he looked like a little older but the feeling "I'm an 'ugly scum just out of a jail' S.o.a B. ready to kick your ass" was still there. I used the code Mass Effect 2 gave me in Mass Effect 3, and at first I didn't like the results at all. He looked like his younger cousin, and I was ready to get anfry again. Luckily, I gave a try in the game, and to be honest I found the same old ugly scummy SoB, maybe a little different, but not so much to think "Hey, who's that guy in MY SHEPARD's clothes?". Then, I found he was cool, and I liked it.

So yeah, I'm still angry 'cause you don't sell something like the third installment of a RPG without the means to make the players feel the game in the clothes they learned to use and love. You don't take a considerable amount of money for a product who's still missing a critical feature. And you must whip your employees in a productive frenzy until the damage is repaired, and meanwhile talking to the fans about the progress made (I am the Sales Management Director in a small software house which produce software line-of-businnes, so I know what I'm talking about: it just happened once we missed a critical part of a software to be released on next monday, and our programmers worked about 30 hours each between saturday and sunday to mend the damage).

But before putting the game away, just give a try to see how your remade Shepard works while is "alive an in movement" and not only in the (VERY BAD, imho) character creator screen.

All of this said, I'm disappointed. Bioware, please, i trusted you and I still trust you can do something good about it, please don't disappoint me...

Sorry for my bad english, and for the lenghty post. Byez!

You sound exactly like me

This issue was what brought me to the forum, I'd never posted here before this.

I see this as a big kick in the teeth after all the years I spent supporting BioWare and loving the franchise - buying books, comic books (multiple times, physical and digital), mobile games, clothing, figurines and other merchandise. I'm sure there's other Mass Effect Fanboys and girls out there who feel the same.

The Dietz "novel" was the only book I didn't buy (for obvious reasons) but I may quit investing my love in Mass Effect altogether if they don't at least acknowledge this issue is a large way. As I said in my previous post, if they can't fix it, they should at least make a bug public apology for this mess.

Folks, one way of applying pressure to EA/Bioware and signalling that this is not okay and must be fixed is to return your games to your retailers under consumer protection laws. Then the pissed off retailers get on to EA/Bioware asking why the hell they're shipping faulty merchandise.

It frustrates me to see so many people being legitimately upset, but inadvertently sending the message (by keeping the game) that this is okay. It baffles me too, as I'm pretty sure it wouldn't happen with other kinds of product.

It's as if you've bought a car and discovered that you can only turn right (default Shep) but that turning left is broken (custom import Shep). So you're making do, and driving around, only turning right, all the while saying, "I'm upset", and wondering when the manufacturer is going to send a mechanic to fix turning left. But the mechanic isn't arriving and you soon get used to navigating everywhere by only turning right, and eventually forget that once upon a time, in other cars, it was possible to turn left too...

Meanwhile, the head honchos at the manufacturer - who already have your money - are looking at their sales figures, and thinking, 'Hey, that car which only turns right was really popular. A few people were upset initially, but they seemed to really like it in the end ~ certainly no-one brought it back. Let's make more of those in the future!"

/end story

Of course if ME3 really were a car, we'd take it straight back, demand a replacement which worked, or a full refund, or a hefty discount to keep it along with compensation for days off the road while it was being fixed for us pronto.

Your English is pretty good actually.

I know what you mean about the creation screen, I thought when I played the demo that the lighting was really poor and I had hoped they'd fix in the full game.

There AREN'T any replacements that work, and EA isn't interested in discounting anything. They do want us all to pay REAL money for Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer monopoly money while we twiddle our thumbs waiting for them to fix core game features they couldn't be assed testing.

I have informed EA Australia that I am seeking compensation under Australian consumer law, and if I don't hear back from them this week, and probably if I DO hear back, I will be sending a letter to the relevant government bodies.

I was listening to the Xbox World (UK) podcast and I gather from what they were saying that the review code didn't allow import of save files so it's no wonder this wasn't really flagged in any of the big reviews. Hopefully, over the next few days, the games media will start to highlight the issue more and that will put pressure on EA/BioWare to do something.

Took me about 2.5 hours but I was finally able to get my femshep that looked close enough to my ME1 and 2. I used the guide posted here. Used the two web sites to get a starting code to adjust in ME2. It wasn't hard to get ME2 right but when I used that code in ME3 it was pretty off. I spent quite a bit of time getting my ME3 to look like 1 and 2. I used a camera to get pictures of my shep in ME2 from every angle.

My shep is not *perfect* but it is close enough for me not to notice. I don't think I could have got it that close without using the online web sites to get a starting code.

I'm very happy that I can now enjoy my time with ME3, but like others I couldn't enjoy ME3 without my Shepard. I'm sad that bioware allowed a bug like this slip through.

This basically sums up the core of the issue. The lack of communication from Bioware is appauling in my opinion. The fact that a big percentage of their community is NOT playing their game does not seem to be an issue, they've already sold their game to us without informing us of the tremendous downside it has at the moment, and they've sold us an addon that we've already have? (I don't have all the information regarding the from ashes issue)

For me this issue can be solved very easily. I have no illusions regarding how tough it must be to develop a multiplatform game of this magnitude. Bugs and issues will be a part of it, but by communicating to their customer an approximately ETA seems to be the least they could conjure up.

Second of all, they've sold us a flawed product. And as customers we have a right for compensation. In my opinion free DLC is the alpha and omega. Especially the From ashes dlc. (I have already purchased this, and again I am not up to speed on the issue)

With these two very simple steps I as a long serving Bioware customer can forgive anything. It's timeto step up though Bioware, it's time to show your customers some respect.

Guys, stop hoping for a fix. They've been aware of the issue for a long time, and haven't done anything to fix it, so stop waiting for something to happen now.

Use the tools at your disposal. For anyone who doesn't know yet, this method works for the facial structure (use a browser other than IE for upload, Google Chrome worked for me), and the NEW GIBBED'S MASS EFFECT 3 SAVE EDITOR is there to iron out leftover elements (eye, hair and skin colour, etc.). Also, the editor allows you to change your face at any time in the game, no need to restart your game in order to enter facecode or whatever. Full procedure:

1. Generate a facecode from your ME2 save using the YAML converter;

2. Open the ME3 character creator (i.e. start a new game in ME3), enter facecode, make any corrections you deem necessary, save the game;

3. Load the ME3 save in Gibbed ME3 Save editor and the ME2 save in Gibbed ME2 Save editor, copy over any values that were left out by the YAML converter (notably eye shape and colour, hair shape and colour etc), save;

4. Using Gibbed, export headmorph from your new edited ME3 save, and import it into your latest ME3 playthrough save.

5. ???

6. PROFIT!!

My result, in the space of a few minutes:

ME1-2:
Posted Image
Posted Image

ME3:
Posted Image

After getting the facial structure from the YAML converter, I corrected eye shape and eye colour using Gibbed (by copying vector values from an ME2 save opened in ME2 Gibbed editor), and decided to keep the new hair and eyebrows since they're more high-def and better styled. By now I'm halfway through ME3 and feel that this is "my" Shepard, though with slightly less makeup and better combed hair.

So my advice to everyone is to stop waiting for the patch, and take your future into your own hands. Bioware made a glaring mistake and are not too eager to correct it, but let's not let them ruin our gameplay any more than they already have.

They're not going to do anything because they don't give a damn, I've been screwed over in this game by them and recently in SWTOR, I lost my legacy name because they punished me for having the audacity to purchase the game state side as they hadn't released it in Australia, you know what I can't even be bothered explaining it, but at this point I don't want anything to do with their games I am that upset, hopefully a good nights sleep will bring a new perspective.

[the noob's view]
I'm quite new to the ME universe, but I've put in a lot of hours over the last couple of months.
Got ME3 last week, and was excited! Couldn't import my ME1>ME2 face. Was not excited anymore - didn't play the game for two days. Finally did my best like-for-like ME2 recreation to get the face code, which I put into ME3 (with  minor tweaking).
Left to right, ME1, ME2, ME3:
Posted Image

OK, it's not right. The head shape and hair are a big part of it, but not all.
After days of hearing Jennifer Hale's voice come out of my Shepard's mouth, it's just weird. Without the continuity, she's an impostor!
BUT... what was I gonna do, not play the game?! I couldn't resist. I'm about 14 hrs in, and really enjoying it. It's not perfect, I have issues [off topic], but... It's kinda epic! I've laughed, I've been moved, I've regretted decisions, I've had some ace battles.

I'm pessimistic about how much of a fix we're eventually going to get. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.
In the meantime, I'm having fun with my impostor!

Hopefully this works for you. I think you have to have a certain number of posts before you can post pictures.

edit: ninja'd!

My Shep has the same hairstyle as yours, and it doesn't translate well into ME3. I can't bring myslef to play until they sort this out - but I'm glad you're enjoying it. Biggest problem for me is avoiding spoilers while I wait.

Not sure if this will help others, but I also noticed my fem Shep looked different (didn't test male yet). But after deciding to leave the sliders alone besides hair color (as it's all I changed from 1 to 2 to 3 for this Shepard), during the cutscenes on Earth I could notice something was off. However, shortly after leaving Earth... my Shepard went back to usual and now looks ever clearer than ever with the same exact look as in ME1 and ME2, except with crisper graphics of course. So, in my case... it corrected itself. Give it a try instead of just sitting around waiting... worse comes to worse you play a little extra Mass Effect 3, and honestly that's a good thing. :)
