OK People, I have a possible workaround that gets "better" results than the YAML method. It's not amazing and its definitely subject to both the lighting in the game (which is noticeably darker and more monotone) and personal impression. Give me a few minutes and I'll compile some images, then a short tutorial of what I did.

Sounds intriguing...

Over 47K views/topic refreshes and over 3K comments on this threadnaught.

2 very non descript "updates", and 1 rather smug reply to a fairly neutral comment.

I don't think I'm being hyper-critical saying that as far as community management goes, this is a poor example of it. If Chris' hands are tied, and Bioware/EA are purposefully keeping the community in the dark while they sort their life out, this certainly not Chris' fault, however someone needs to be accountable for this fairly critical error in game mechanics - and now poor management of community expecations. Unfortunately this is only going to turn frustration into resentment, and its a shame it's Bioware's name being dragged through the mud and not EA. I feel for the folks at Bioware, but if they are incapable of properly running a damage control campaign, they are going to turn their core fanbase from critics to cynics.

Ask CCP how well that worked out for them last summer.

You guys are very hard to please. I mean, I'm totally with you and am very upset by this giant failure, but it's just that there are pages and pages of people saying "any update will do, just acknowledge us and say you're still working on it".. then we get an update saying its a top priority and there's more bashing on how it wasn't a good enough update.

A massive bug like this is likely a pretty huge and complicated fix. Obviously should have been fixed from the start, but it is what it is. The game is outstandingly good (I got my Shepard looking and feeling like MY Shepard, so I'm about 10 hours in now). I hate that this amazing game has been tarnished by this whole import bug.

I don't think the community is wrong when expecting to purchase something that works as intended. Bugs happen, but when they stop a group from enjoying what they paid for, this is a matter that needs to be handled swiftly with transparnecy. Going out of your way to not only fix the issue but also continue to develop and nurture goodwill within the community is not too much to ask. Given that almost every AAA title now a days is always delayed past their original intended release date (was this not supposed to be released for winter 11?), and when the do launch there are still critical bugs - it's hard not to be critical.

Proper QA and in the event of such bugs like these, a little bit of transparnecy without the smugness would go a long way in mitigating "our" high expectations of what we are paying for.

Fan made "fixes" are all well and good, but we shouldn't have to use them.... the 20+ yrs I've been gaming, I've never had to do anything like it!!

BioWare will sort it for us.... I have every faith that they will....I made a Shep in ME3, and he's spot on, only a little older =) I made a Shep in 1, imported to 2, but changed his hair, and in 3 (demo, won't get full game untill tomorrow) and like I said, I used the facecode I got from 2, and he's spot on =)

Definitely not saying the community is wrong one bit. This never should have happened, period. Only saying that people beg for an update, get one, and then complain about the update. I guess some would feel better to at least having a daily update saying the same thing "We're still working on it" but that's not really telling us anything new. Plus that is being said on the Twitter page daily.

I do think once they have something concrete to post, they will post it. But being a developer myself, I know that things aren't usually that cut and dry. Especially for a game breaking bug like this one.

I think once all is said and done, the explanation will follow and hopefully we will get some sort of payback for putting up with it. But I don't expect that to come beforehand. Though I do think a formal apology should have been given by now. That is more unacceptable than the lack of updates, in my opinion.

I'll echo some frustration here. (shaking fist at Bioware developers)

How is it that this wasn't completely tested before release? Importing characters all the way from ME1 is what makes these games special.

While ME3 was incredible, there are a number of extreme glitches, bugs and oversights that are keeping me from recommending this game until it is all sorted out.

Not the final solution though

Fan made fixes are ok but they really don't the job that bioware has supossed to do

so i expect bioware to do better than that.

Agreed. I sympathize with the developers - mistakes, bugs, etc are part of the business - like all walks of life. However, companies hire PR to contain, spin, mitigate and rebuild goodwill. I've yet to see anything of the sort.

So here is some visual evidence of the approach I'm using. It makes use of Gibbed's save editor for ME2 and ME3. The process requires you to copy, by hand, the variables you need from ME2 to ME3 then save it. A tutorial will follow, but this is to show you the result, assuming you want to keep reading.

I chose a female Shepard (I haven't tested the male) and specifically went for the one I had that seemed a bit strangely shaped and because it has purple hair, which I set in the save file when I made it. Please not the hair style and eyebrow style were not set, which is why they're different.

Here is the result of the process: http://i685.photobuc...x/RawImport.png

Never used any type of "mods" or "fixes" don't intend to.....

This reminds me of two other games, that had loads of "glitches" and bugs,,,, I was put off buying them after reading stuff, but I bought them anyway....and I didn't suffer from anything anyone said was wrong with them...

And, like I said, BioWare are completely aware of the problem, this thread was started by someone from Bioware, and I have faith it will be fixed as soon as its possible....

yes, it shouldn't be a problem, but it is...thats life...

It certainly looks better than the direct import.  (And the direct import was basically the equivalent of yaml, right?)

It's not as easy for me to tell with someone else's Shep, but the eyes & eyebrows look quite a bit off from ME2.

But still, I'm eager to give it a shot.

And oh yeah, I second the person who said Bioware should be paying you. :)

The eyebrows need to be set before you make the Shep, since they're a texture and thus are named, and names changed between ME2 and ME3. Don't worry, give me a couple of hours and I'll make a tutorial explaining this. I simply forgot to do that beforehand. That said, you've followed what I've been saying so far so I think you know what I'm looking at.

The bulk of this work is done by Gibbed's editor. He gets credit.

Gibbed's editor also works on xbox saves, you'll just have to go through a few more steps to extract the xbsav then you can edit like a pcsav.

PC is definitely a lot more versatile when it comes to things like this. Now wouldn't it be embarrassing if someone made a mod for the PC version that fixed this issue :)

This.

I'll endevour to include a section for extracting the xbsav as well, but unfortunately I've never owned an X360 and so it might not be incredibly helpful to you. Regardless, as Merdink has mentioned, the Gibbed save editor does operate on xbox saves so theoretically it should work.

Just give me a little while to, you know, eat.

I've noticed that almost all talk about this refers to the Xbox or PC version. Are PS3 users even more screwed?

So, first post on the forum.

Some thoughts:
Firstly, ME2 had less choices(hairs, colors like said) than ME1, but you could use them by importing your character, and I hope it'll be the same with ME3, we're not able to choose some traits because we can't import it, but they're still there;

Secondly, I know I repeat it, but how can you advertise you're making a game that let's you play with your custom character in the sequels, and then don't check if it works well?

And there's my try to re.create my Shepard.

Hopefully this gets read by Bioware/EA. I submitted an email when my face import wouldn't work because i didn't know that this was a wide spread issue nor that EA was aware of it. 2 days later with no response, I tried live chat. I asked where I could find the face codes from ME2 so I could put them in to ME3. The response I received was "you can't do that." That was it. I said of course I can...there's a field for it and everything. After ten minutes of no response they said "have a great day" or something like that. So I tried another live chat to get a different rep. Same conversation basically. Then 2 days after that my email was responded to with "you can't do that."

Simply saying "We're aware of the situation and working on it" in those instances would have been great. Why did I have to find out about this through google and not through any of the three reps I was in contact with? I also received a similar answer when I asked those live chat reps about my mic input not working in coop. EA reps have been great before this. It's just frustrating when the only response you get is "nope, sorry."

By the way, first the shi**y bonus armor in Mass Effect 2 from Dragon Age (which you cant remove the helmet), aslo the bonus Cerberus Assault Bonus Armor from collectors edition in ME2, and now this + the DLC from ashes?
