Am I right in assuming the bug comes from the fact that no facial code is generated by importing from ME1 to ME2 and leaving the face unchanged?
That was my assumption. If you change the face in ME2 (ie build from scratch) the game generates a face code for you. Importing that face to ME3 simply pulls the face code and creates the face. But an unchanged face never has a face code generated, thus the import feature probably tries to locate a code that simply isn't here.

If I'm right in this assumption, it seems the seed of this issue was sown during ME2's development rather than simply ME3's. And if that's the case, this issue should have been known right from the very start. Perhaps Bioware underestimated just how attached people are to their own Shepard. I know the majority of players use the default Shepard according to their own player use statistics, but shrugging off the custom build users is a bit cynical.

I've also been holding off playing the game until the patch is out, despite my friends telling me I'm being stubborn and imature. Absolutely, I actually give a damn about my Shepard. I spent an hour designing her to be attractive but with imperfections, you know like Cate Blanchet or Uma Thurman is. Importing her to ME2, it was perfect. I imported and there she was, just as I left her, it was like Yahtzee said - slipping into a pair of comfy trousers. I'd heard of this bug in advance and figured I'd get it...I did. Thus while everyone else went off on the ending to the game, I sat feeling bitter about the start.

I'm not going to seek a refund on this, especially since they've said they've found out how to fix this issue (would have been nice to encode the ME1 - ME2 importer in such a way that this issue never came out in the first place, but it's a bit late for that), but I am very disappointed in how this has turned out. After Dragon Age 2 I was going into ME3 with a sense of dread, feeling that the Bioware I had known and loved had been swallowed by the corporate machine. It's sad that my ME3 experience was ruined before I'd even seen my first cutscene.

It's quite disheartening that this still has yet to have been fixed.

I wanted to play as my main Shep first, but her face wouldn't import (obviously or I wouldn't be in this thread) and I just couldn't get it to look right to me in the character creator. Even taking into account the CC doesn't always look 100% with regard to the ingame, I did start up and play up to the part where you get free control of the Normandy, but nope, the face, it just wasn't "right" to me, so that career got deleted.

So I moved on to my secondary Shep. Using the YAML and save edit hacking, I was able to get him reasonably similar to how he looked before, at least close enough that I could deal with it. I was hoping that by the time I got through with that playthrough, the fix would be out, so I could just jump right in to my REAL game, treat this one as a preview, but noooooooo.

I know they say it's fixed and they just have to wait for MS/Sony blah blah patch whatever but it's still a major bummer that 3 weeks later it's not ready to go.

Frankly it would feel like less of a raw deal if they'd just delay games and actually test them enough to work out kinks like this BEFORE they release them.

Does this mean that no one at Bioware actually bothered to test the game by playing through ME1 to ME3? Sounds like a really basic thing to do.

If this same would have happened with choice flags our entire game would have been ruined? "Oops"? "We'll do something about it"?

This is one of the biggest, if not the biggest game feature, of course they knew about this.  The sad part is they chose to put this broken game on the shelf.  Did they tell EA they needed more time and EA said screw it?, or did Bioware figure they would just deal with this later.

They probably thought it weren't such an important feature, after all. And, you know what? I do agree with them! it's not important at all, it's only the very first thing you are asked to do while starting a new game: "Do you want to play as a default Shepard or create/import a customized one?".

My original Shepards (imported from ME1 then to ME2) did not import correctly into ME3.
1 Shep imported without any error message but the face was completely wrong. It couldn't have been more wrong.
My 2nd Shep gave me an error MSG.

I have another Shepard character that was only used in ME2. It imported fine (minus the facial scars)
So, only the most loyal fans are bork'd by this bug

It feels like the theme in the Bioware studios while making ME3 was:
"What can we get away with?"

It is the first thing you do in the game. Enough said. Joke.

Is the error random? In other words, is there a point in trying to re-import the face, or will I get the error every time?

This is a pretty big kick in the stones after playing through ME1 and ME2 in preparation of this.

The error isn't random and you'll get it everytime. Making your character's face just is not the same as the previous two games.

It could only have been a terrible, terrible oversight or a deliberate curtailing of the game's customization feature.

In either case, it reflects very, very poorly on Bioware .It just is not possible, given the apparent "heavy testing" across all platforms we're told they uphold, that they put a broken game on store shelves without knowing it was broken. Just not possible. Moreover, we're not even given an explanation as to why this is, which can only mean Bioware is covering its own ass for making, intentionally or not, a huge mistake. Instead we're given a third party tool, an apology after the company has take millions of dollars from customers, and told that they understand our frustration. It's been three weeks, and a game that was developed over 5 years is still broken. How pitiful is that?

Disgusting.

Yeah, the reason it's a kick in the stones is because the customization features have changed to the point I can't make it look right.

That's obscene. The ability to take your character through the entire narrative is the entire appeal of the game! How did something so basic and so damaging get through?

And just when I was getting over that cut content DLC nonsense...

I think people reveal the endings on this thread cause they're mad that they didn't wait for the fix and want to (subconsciously or consciously) ruin it for the people who have held out.

It's okay though, I always tune out the moment I suspect someone is going to reveal a spoiler. I am still completely in the dark to how it ends. I've seen little hints, but nothing overtly revealing. I tune out as fast as I can.

that's what i would like to know? I have 3 different chars from ME1 that i moved over to ME2 with all different looks. 2 REFUSED to import and 1 imported looking like a gorilla.

It is THE first... THE FIRST THING... you do in the game? and it MESSES up. I'd like to know how this bug ever got past QA!?!?

the error that you get is that the facial info can't get imported, so you'll have to reconstruct it. Otherwise the data is solid. I had to do the roundabout way of transferring my xbox save to the PC and pulling out the face code.

I'm in the same boat. I haven't had the ending spoiled yet, nor do I want it spoiled, nor would I have any respect for somebody who intentionally ruins the narrative for people who haven't gone through it yet.

But I'd really like some kind of ballpark on this (on the condition I not complain if it gets bumped for some reason). If it's going to be May before I can play with my Shepard, then I'll make do with a new creation.

What I really want, beyond the patch, is for somebody from Bioware that was part of Mass Effect 3 to do an interview with IGN, or some gaming site/magazine and talk about all the problems that we've had. How something as basic as character customization made it past quality control, for example.

I was trying to import the same file every day for the first week or so, no luck.

The game ends with a screen saying they will take your money for more DLC COMING SOON!

Seriously.

yeah this must be more "public" in some-how, we need to contact all this gaming sites and telll them "we STILL can't play" we know they announce a patch but ¿where is it? we need to ask Bioware "WHEN?!"

Admissions of guilt? From Bioware and EA? Don't hold your breath.

I would be much more upset about this, but on my "serious" playthrough of Mass Effect 1 (I didn't get completely obsessed with the franchise until the summer of 2011, even though I played the games years earlier) I spent hours painstakingly crafting my face.

For one reason or another, I wrote all the settings down, as in how many slider taps from the left of each bar. Perhaps I knew subconsciously that I would need these settings in the future. Years of getting burned by EA have made me insanely cautious when it comes to their products. Even something so ridiculously fundamental has a chance to be botched, and lo and behold it was.

At first I didn't believe it when March 6th rolled around and I unboxed my $80 CE. A quick Google search confirmed my suspicions, so I dug out that piece of paper and recreated my face. It worked!

But from that moment on I began to notice signs of a rushed game, of poor QA and shoddy craftsmanship. Then the ending...

It's a damn shame. It's a goddamn shame.

Two main reasons the patch isn't out yet:

1 They attached bug fixes as well so it will be a massive patch.

2 All the certifying from all the companies.

Doing both is making it take an insane amount of time.  They should just release the PC patch now and let Microsoft and Sony approve it later.

haha thats awesome.  Honestly though, Bioware this needs to be patched TODAY.  I have tried to create faces that look similar to my character from ME2 & they all come out looking terrible.  Its making the game unplayable.
