Yeah, I'm just going to play through with ImposterShep now. It'll probably take them a while to patch if (if it's even possible), and my canon Shep is pretty close to one of the presets anyway...

I'm NOT bringing my black Shepard into this, though. God, I'd be heartbroken if his face got mucked up in ME3. :(

Anyway. Thanks for responding, Bioware. This is an amazing game, but issues like this mar the experience for long-time fans. Hopefully, this doesn't remain an issue for long.

Cheers, everyone! This really is a fantastic game, despite the setbacks. :D

I'v been playing around with the workaround in the demo for a while. My shep looks pretty damn close to his old self now. Still something off but It seems thats just the new animations etc interacting with the face.

I am very skeptical of their being a "total fix" because I think a lot of it has to do with the way they changed the face mechanics. I look at the NPCs as evidence. You can tell Anderson and Joker are Anderson and Joker, but there are definitely some weird, subtle differences.  Ambassador Udina looks WAY different: I didn't even know it was the same guy until someone addressed him by name. They must have had to remake those NPCs too.

As of now, 38% of people say they won't play the game with the current error:

This doesn't fix the actual issue though. There are color/features missing from ME2 faces when they get moved to ME3.

This.  I figured out the code to import my ME2 Shepard, but she still looks off.  No amount of tweaking makes her look like she did in ME2.  Even if there's a fix to import the character easier, how does it change the fact that ME3 still doesn't render their face correctly?

Edit:  Adding my Shepard from ME3/ME2 here too for comparison.

I know this personal, but I kinda like her more in mass effect 3. But hey just my opinion :)

I know. I took an hour trying to replicate my Shep's face and finally gave up when I realized I had no chance. He kind of looks like he used to...if he got beat repeatedly in the face with a meat mallet.

This is one hell of a rotten thing to foist on returning players. How was this not found or fixed before launch?

But it's not about whether you can make your Shepard look "better" or not, it's about if they look the same. It's hard to have that connection if it doesn't feel like the same person.

So I rebuilt my default the best I could, and she looks approximate enough. Except her skin is significantly lighter even though I used the darkest option on the slider, which is not just obnoxious but offensive. If I create a black character, then I don't need her to be white washed in the final game.

I found that especially weird: there is one shade of brown, one shade of tan, and a ton of shades of white.  Realistically speaking, it should be the opposite. I have a Shepard I figured was of Indian descent who had brown skin, and I couldn't find a good skin tone either.

The game is UNPLAYABLE.

It looks... fine? Seriously, what's wrong with it? Only thing is her hair is slightly lighter but that's hardly game breaking. No, that would be the very limited dialog options... but that's off-topic.

The one on the left is from Mass Effect 3.

Oh dear lord...

There has been a thread about this for a while now that went for more than 80 pages and only until the game is released does Bioware confirm their customers concerns. Sad...really Sad to say the least. They clearly were more interested in sales with ME3

Hate to say it, but it was probably an issue of publicity. Even if they were able to fix the problem within the week, they wouldn't want to make it more-known to the public to drop their initial sales. You know, sell it first, fix it later.

It's really annoying that most of us make it through ME1 and ME2 with our same custom charcters ,and now that ME3 is out we end up having to wait or remake them. I agree with some of the others on here it seem like somthing this IMPORTant would have be checked before now.

The two big problems that tag along with this "smaller" one...

1. BioWare had to of known about this from testing the game and deliberately didn't fix it.
2. The only way I can see a fix being implemented is if the Devs program that old face creator options into the new game and then somehow import the scars. Obviously this isn't our problem, but this could take a while...

If BioWare doesn't fix this soon, they have lost a long and previously happy customer.

Thanks for waiting to make an announcement about this after the game was released. And here I thought for sure you guys would be competent enough to fix the problem in that day 1 patch. Glad I won't be making that mistake again.

Great, I tried rebuilding the Shep I wanted to playthrough with and all I got was a fat albino and then a hobo during my second attempt. Thanks for this.

There's no way this was missed during play-testing. This is absolutely unacceptable. It's a huge error and I haven't even started playing yet.

Man this whole mess is such a disappointment I mean I waited 2 hours in line last night at the midnight release, installed the game, downloaded DLC and when I was finally ready to start playing, I can't play it with the same face I've poured hours and hours into the franchise with. Unbelievable that this is even an issue.

What bothers me the most is WHY would you change the character creation tool from the second game?!? Even if they resolve this issue I have a feeling our characters still won't be identical to the way they looked in ME2. I spent hours today working the method that's been outlined and taking the code from my ME1 character and tweaking it in the ME2 creation tool, to only have it be a shell of my character in ME3. It boggles my mind that BioWare knew it was a trilogy, they knew a lot of us were importing our characters yet they changed or removed certain facial features making it impossible to recreate our characters from scratch if we have too. What's worse is that it seems that the character creation tool took a step back from ME2, most of the recreations I've seen of ME2 imports look worse than they did in the second game.

I really hope this patch can fix things but I'm not optimistic that we'll get our same characters back.

This is a damn shame BioWare.

True, and that's the problem. They didn't care to achnowledge our concern before release and could have at least told us they were working on a patch. However, we got the silent treatment. I guess the introduction MP really did affect the SP side of the game despite how much Bioware denied it would. Just look at all the questionable moves they made with SP....case in point ME1 faces not importing and not being able to holster your weapon.

This is not fact, but my best guess:

From playing the game, it seems like Bioware has upgraded some of the facial mechanics to allow for a wider range of expessions. I think that some of the facial sets you can choose in the previous 2 games were likely not compatible with the new facial models.  You can see that a lot of familiar NPCs have been signficantly tweaked as well.  As to WHY Bioware would think that more realistic-looking faces would be worth sacrificing your original face, I can't say: that's why it's just my theory.

Well I got a pretty good result out of using the temporary fix(on the Demo). One of my mansheps:

ME1 Posted Image

ME2 Posted Image

ME3 Posted Image

Dudesheps seem to come out better than femsheps. The faces are longer in ME3 for some reason..kinda weird but whatever.

Really?  Because the eyes from the ME3 one (on the left) really bother me.  Like she's going to drill a hole into you by staring at you.  I also think it's weird that it looks like she got younger.  I don't think she looks bad, but it's kind of besides the point -- which is that she's not my Shepard.  She's like ImposterShep.  It's almost right, but different enough to be very jarring.  I should be focusing on the story but in any cut scene I just keep thinking "That's not my Ava!!"
