But that is only like one of several characters, so I am hoping I can do a run with my psychotic looking soviet spy Soldier Shep.

In game, most Sheps are recognizably themselves, once you acclimate to the new art direction.
Need to chime in agreement with this. I had to use the roundabout method for getting a facecode for my Shep, and at first was like "uh, that's not the same person at all", but playing with her for a while in game, the similarities do turn up and start getting comfortable. Mind, I'd have still prefered minor graphic upgrade (like from ME1 to ME2) over the new art direction. But it's gone from "total catastrophe" to "this will work out".

Building up to this release date in Australia..having to wait an extra couple of days for release. Spending all day at work thinking about playing this game...coming home, finally getting ready to play.
I got the SAME ERROR with the DEMO. And I literally thought "Well, I hope that gets fixed upon release"
...and it is not.
Fantastic work. Give us an ETA please.

Had to come and add my comments to the growing anger. I haven't got my game yet (UK release tomorrow) but I'm shocked at how such a huge and important feature of the series has been screwed up so badly.
A major selling point is that your character will go with you through the entire game, importing is something you marketed to gamers a LOT. Having it be so broken right now, and the fact that you seem to be fine with it, is utterly sickening.
Updating the graphics engine is obviously something you want to do and something we all enjoy to see - but when it breaks such a fundamental feature of the game, it is absolutely not cool. And totally removing things from the character creator?? What the hell were you thinking? How could anyone at Bioware possibly believe that was a good idea? How on EARTH can you expect the fans to attempt to keep some kind of continuity between ME2 and ME3 when we can't even re-create our characters??
This is pathetic. Absolutely awful. Get it sorted. I, like many here, purchased all three collectors editions and have pumped hundreds upon hundreds of hours into these games - all to have it destroyed because you can't be bothered to make the imports work right.
Absolutely unreal. To us loyal fans, this is like seeing Morgan Freeman playing John McClane in Die Hard 3. Not acceptable and completely removes you from the experience.
I totally agree, I am in the UK and pre ordered my copy of ME3 on Xbox which arrived today, I have spent the whole evening trying to sort out my character. I have booked a day off work tomorrow to play the game, so if my day is wasted, then I will not be happy, as I should be able to just jump right in to this game.
I really bugs me that they're crapping all over twitter and facebook promoting a game that doesn't even function properly, and they haven't given an update now for 48 hours. Not acceptable.
Not sure about anyone else, but I keep switching back and forth between ME2 and ME3 and so far tonight, there has been 4 updates on ME2 and and 3 updates on ME3 , still not importing the face, so I'm not sure what they're doing but it needs to be sorted soon, or I'm asking for either compensation, or my money back.

ME3
Another poster recently mentioned that only female shepards are being mangled and players of the male shepard are complaining about nothing, I don't think that's the case at all. I think we all notice the difference the most in our own shepard, and if we have a preference for gender we are probably biased towards noticing that gender's differences the most. Either way, it's clear people are unhappy with the way this thing works, and we should probably focus more on getting information to each other and to Bioware (if they're following any of this), rather than playing "my problem is bigger than yours". We're all in the same boat here, and we all would like to have our Shepards back. Looking at someone else's character it's easy to say "who cares?" but that's not the point. We aren't preserving physical perfection, we're preserving what exists in our memories and what we have become attached to. We are trying to preserve the face that for many of us is the face of Shepard and the face of OUR version of the series. And that's what Mass Effect is all about. Your choices. Your consequences. Your Shepard.

well if BW IS tryin to fix this bug then BW should be trying to account for other bugs as well to add in
but some of the bugs r funny as hell saw a Banshee get stuck in a wall cuz they orb
I'd rather they get the face import thing figured out ASAP rather than working it into a full-on title update. After about 10 restarts I've finally gotten a Shepard that doesn't completely ****** me off with his different look, but I've got a Renegade Shep waiting in the wings who needs his scars to transfer over =)
i know but u think BW cares for one bug fix update? so we r prolly lookin for a next week patch unless BW is fast about it could be this friday but unlikely
ive got 6 shepard saves waiting for this damn patch but just had to do the Tali romance made him look pretty close to what he really looks like but dont remember how i made his face each shepard prolly got 1-3 days thinkin how i should make him/her

This is yet another unhappy camper about the import face feature. Both of my saves were from Mass Effect 1, carried into Mass Effect 2, and both will not transfer the face to Mass Effect 3. I refuse to play the single player until this is fixed, and if such a highly marketed feature does not get fixed, it questions my opinion on Bioware's reliability on releasing a quality product and I will seriously consider questioning whether purchase of future Bioware and Mass Effect titles is a good purchase. I consider this unprofessional.
Try this.
Start a new game of ME2 and load your character from ME1. Toggle back and forth between “Accept import Face” and “Customize” and keep making changes to the customized face until it looks exactly the same. Write down the face code and there you have it. While the face code probably won’t come out exact in ME3, you’ll have a great jumping off point to start tweaking from. Worked like a charm for me.

Here is basically what I did.
1. Start a brand new Mass Effect 2 save file with your Mass Effect imported Shepard. It has to be brand new, because you're going to need to move, not copy it, to a USB flash drive that is formatted to work on your 360. You don't want to do this with your finished game save, so make sure it's a new one (i.e. right when you wake up from your coma, save and quit).
2. Go to Settings in your dashboard, System, Storage, Hard Drive and find your Mass Effect 2 save (not "Mass Effect 2 Importer"). Inside, you should find files for all your DLC and each of your careers. They will all be named after your Shepards and dated. Move the career you just created to your USB flash drive (don't copy, because the Xbox won't allow it).
3. Download and install this program on your PC (it's best to have this version): hotfile.com/dl/143431599/02eaea8/Modio_3.zip.html
4. Plug your USB flash drive into your PC, and using Modio, select Open from a device. Click the device you see. Mass Effect 2 should pop up in that list. Select it, then select your Shepard's save file. When the following window pops up, click the File Contents tab at the top. You should see several .xbsav extensions. Right click one of them and extract them all to your desktop (or where ever you prefer).
5. Go to this website and register on it: legion.cal24.pl/me2/
6. Once you've registered at that site and logged in, click the My saves tab at the top of the page. The specific save file that you extracted to your desktop (or where ever) that you're going to want to upload here should be named Save_0001.xbsav. Go ahead and upload that save on this site.
7. You should now have one save listed at the top of that page with a string of options following it. The second to last option on that row is Morph head. Click that option.
8. Now new options show up. You want to click Export YAML. It should download a file to your computer called morphhead.yaml. Check this file in Notepad to make sure it's all in code that you can read (only read, not necessarily understand), otherwise the file is mucked up and you have to try this step again.
9. Once you have a decent YAML file to work with, upload it in one of two places, depending on the sex of your Commander Shepard -
Female Shepards will upload here: masseffecttools.99k.org/femshep_upload.php
Male Shepards will upload here: masseffecttools.99k.org/maleshep_upload.php
Remember to add your Shepard's name, because it's how you recover the face template code.
10. Lastly, you're going to want to get your Shepard's code, again in one of two places depending on the sex -
Female Shepards codes are here: masseffecttools.99k.org/femshep_code.php
Male Shepards codes are here: masseffecttools.99k.org/maleshep_code.php
All you need to do now is enter the name you typed when you uploaded your YAML file, and bam, instant Shepard readout and code for your Shepard. There will be a little tweaking required (as pointed out by the ***** asterisks), but it shouldn't be anywhere near as bad as trying to recreate your Shepard from scratch. It'll generally be little things like hairstyle, makeup color, or eye color. You know, the easy things to remember and fix. Everything without the ***** next to them should be correct, though.
And that's pretty much how I got my Shepard back without waiting for any sort of patch. You just enter that code you get at the bottom of that page into your custom character creation back on your 360 copy of Mass Effect 3 and do the necessary tweaking and you're done.

This method was really easy. Thank you so much for posting this! xoxo
I would suggest this method to everyone, It replicated my shepard perfectly into ME3. I have no doubts that the code given was not my shepard.

Anyone else get stuck on Step 5:
5. Go to this website and register on it: legion.cal24.pl/me2/
When I try this I get an "Unable to Complete Request" message. If I reload to try again, it gives this location with the same message:

Agreed, everyone is in the same boat. I play exclusively male Shepard and have spent literally hundreds of hours with him across the two games. I can get him close on the editor, but the mouth, eyebrows and eyes are definitely wrong.
I refuse to accept an approximation. If my Shepard cant finish the story I started, than I wont be playing 3.

So we are invested in our characters.
So why wasn't there a discussion taking place such as "Hmm, well this is the final game in the trilogy. Users would really want to retain their characters here, as per the previous two games. The face import feature is very important here, so make sure it works correctly across all scenarios"

Now, the reason I am this way isn't Bioware's fault. I know guys you were rushing to make deadlines, and I do appreciate that. So please make sure to get us a patch for this soon--one that works, it will be appreciated!
Thank you.

The hair and eye colour from ME 2 are completely removed. Not to mention the facial structure is barely a mild resemblance. In game, my ME3 shepards hair is completely black.

Now trying to remake her in ME2, and it's close, but it still looks off (even if it's just by a bit, it's still disturbing)! But even if I remake my femshep, she still has no (ME2) scars! Which made her look even more badass!
So please fix this BioWare! As you guys can see, this is a problem that a lot of people encountered! From America to Europe, to where ever!

I echo those who've calmly called this out as unprofessional: it's poor craftsmanship, shoddy implementation and appalling quality control, all wrapped up in a shockingly dishonest PR whitewash pre-release.
Thankfully here in the UK we have some excellent Consumer Rights laws and my copy is going straight back to the retailer for a full refund given that it is not 'as described' or 'of satisfactory quality' or 'fit for purpose' under the Sale of Goods Act. I suggest others do the same. The large retailers are much better placed than we individual consumers are to tackle Bioware/EA on the ethics of distributing faulty merchandise for sale.
I will happily repurchase the game once it works as intended. Of course game prices always drop sharply in the weeks or months after release, so less profit will be made, but therein lies the lesson for Bioware/EA: don't distribute your product until it works!
Update 00:55am: Just downloaded a 25.3MB update via Origin and tried again. No change to face import problem.

How the hell did QA miss this?
They didn't. There's no reasonable way anyone could believe this wasn't known; it's the *first thing you see* when you start the game. Priority seems to have instead been given to keeping a lid on the matter. Apparently, they're blocking Facebook users who mention it on their site?
The issue isn't so much incompetence as it is fraud & misrepresentation. Mistakes happen and we can forgive those. But blatant fraud?
