I also suffer from the dreaded face import bug. My custom ME1 face which I took far more time than I should have creating my "canon" Shepard was able to be imported directly into ME2 without issue. I used the frontal spike/shaved sides military haircut on him which transferred. Because of the face import I never got an ME2 face code.
Using some of the tools available to take a ME2 face imported from ME1 I was able to get the slider positions to roughly recreate my character from scratch in ME2 which would then give me a face code. One major problem... my haircut was not in the game. It is if you import your ME1 character but it's not a part of the default (selectable) styles of hair in ME2. They do have one that is the rough equivalent.
So I began my quest to recreate my Shepard using this process and got a pretty dead on recreation of my original ME1 Shepard minus the spiked haircut, which was tamed a little in ME2. Thinking I had a good viable solution I took my ME2 face code and put it into ME3. BOOM! Not so much.
Haircut is gone/missing, eyebrows were wrong, lips where wrong. Using the options available to me in ME3 and spending about an hour on this stuff I created what was the closest thing to my original ME1 and ME2 Shepard. The lack of the haircut is the biggest thing for me. It's a total visual change. Plus my facial features seem... off.
I anxiously await a possible fix myself but I'm doubtful one will be presented.
Here are my results of a few wasted hours of game playtime. Yes! It's that important to me too!
