Was the squad just filing their nails? What a contrived and pointless happening.

I don't know about you... but I had to go to the bathroom, I felt Thane had it under control. Lol

But honestly I wonder the same thing, I felt like there should have been an option to save his life.

Good question, but the real question is why didn't Thane finish off Kai when he had the chance!??

He's a good person

and OP?

Realistically, if a couple of assasins are having a duel of fates style battle...you can't really charge in or fire your gun.

Besides, we've seen in the past thane has the ability to out right kill people with his kung fu, i was seriously waiting for this to happen when the fight broke out.

i was like "HAHA YEAH, THANE IS HERE TO SAV- OH GOD OH GOD OH WHY GOD D:"

Well...

-They couldn't really shoot forward as Thane was sort of blocking them from doing so by standing right in front of them.

-They were protecting the councilor, having noticed that the assassin could teleport, stealth, and was incredibly fast. If they hadn't been standing there, he might have just zipped past them all and stabbed the councilor.

Duh come on! There's a moment when Leng's on the floor after taking a big Warp in his face, Councilor's secured between your squad mates (who, let's remind it, aren't the two first stupid Privates you grabbed around the corner). Shepard just needed to make three steps to stand at Thane's side and take his place, or fight with him, instead of letting him charge like a Krogan, graaah!
I understand this was needed for plot reasons, but I'm just gonna pretend Leng stuck all the squad in an elevator or something. 'Cause Shepard standing like a vegetable while her sick man's getting killed... DID NOT happen ><'''

My personal head canon answer is "protecting the principal". Allowing the Salarian Councillor being assassinated during a human coup could end the joint species war effort. My Shepard chose to protect the target rather than protecting her buddy.

same can be said about the VS getting smashed on Mars. Shep could have easily shot and destroyed the robot before the VS got injured

My Shep took advantage of the distraction to get intimate with the Dalatrass whilst nobody was looking.

If Shep was really special forces, Kai Leng would have been shot first chance.

The amount of stupid in that scene is baffling. It symbolizes (mostly) everything that is wrong with Bioware nowadays. Logic, reason and motives are replaced by 'cool' and 'art'. The player is forced to be a spectator, stuck behind a glass wall even though the player character is there, right in the middle of the action.

Yeah, it makes total sense for infiltrator!Shepard and Garrus to take ineffective potshots with the predator rather than killing the guy with a Widow... or soldier!Shepard could have fired 5 rounds rapid with the Sabre without giving Kai a chance to turn around... etc

It's cutscene incompetence, which is conspicuously used in every confrontation with Kai... because Bioware couldn't think of a way to believably advance the plot.

Are you sure you don't mean the Councilor?
