Coincidentally i played that part again today.
Seriously people, that scene is not retarted as i saw it (again).
you have 2 agile assassin's fighting here and there, are you going to shoot?
And thane did not die in Vain .
He sufferef from Kepral's syndrome adn he was about to die.
HIS WOUNDS were treaed but he died from Kepral syndrome. the doc said that.
So his role was played perfectly.
He died a hero.

Realistically, if a couple of assasins are having a duel of fates style battle...you can't really charge in or fire your gun.

Besides, we've seen in the past thane has the ability to out right kill people with his kung fu, i was seriously waiting for this to happen when the fight broke out.

Biotics, telling Thane to move while you shoot at Kai Leng, a lot of things.

Thane is(was) the best Assassin in the Galaxy, trained in various martial arts. Shepard probably thought he could take him. and If Thane wasn't dieing, he probably would have.

Good point. I was looking at the ****** the entire time.  Anyway the entire scene was ridiculous,  Apparently Shepard is okay letting a terminally ill man who can hardly breath do all the fighting, Maybe during the first scuffle between the two Assassins.. But as soon as Kai Leng hit the floor Shepard and his/her Squadmates should have taken over.... Maybe Kai Leng would just turn the tail and run like a pansy... and then the battle cause too much strain on Thanes lungs and he dies right there...but Shepard not helping.... is mindblowing stupid.

Yep. In the good ol' days they have the decency of raising a curiously well-timed-and-placed barrier between them. Or the never-too-old "paralysis".

But seriously, Ninja-boy could use barriers, as we saw later. They could have made him put one between him, the counselor, and Shep's group. While someone observed "we'll never break it on time", Thane could appear from the shadows already inside the barrier and fight. Would have been better than Shep just looking around. Even when one fell on the floor, got disarmed etc.

Here is why: The Law of Conservation of Ninjitsu. Meaning in any one fight there is a limited amount of ninjitsu to go around. So the more people there is on any side of a fight, the less ninjitsu each one gets, so Shepard smartly stays out of the fight so Thane can have all of the ninjitsu concentrated in himself to fight Kai Leng.

Obviously it doesn't help though, since Kai Leng also has Plot Armor.

It's as good a reason as any, since it's silly that Shepard wouldn't help out.

I realize that this topic is stagnant for the past 4 months, but i just played that part again, and it reminded me how stupid that part is. Not only the 'letting thane stabbed' part (I could have ordered Liara to use Stasis on him, while used my doctor prescribed-headshot on him for example), but what comes right after, when he lands on your car. For crying out loud, you are in a moving car, you have MANY obstacles in every direction.... but the one im talking about is the one where you and Garrus will have bro time.

Why couldnt you smash the damned assassin (whoannoys me to hell with his scripted escapes) against one of the bridges? Or do a 360, to shake him, or use a large hadron collider...OR SOMETHING? In a game where you can pretty much decide who lives or dies, why force our hands in such an annoying, but more importantly: lazy way.
Leng has to live because of a later plot element, but then dont give us the opportunity to kill him off
(they could have made him wreck our car while it was on the ground to prevent the thought of smashing him against anything)
meh. This guy is pretty much untouchable (plot armor, anyone?) before the final confrontation, yet Turrets and Phantoms pose more threat than him after you are 'allowed' to kill him...

Yeah... you know you just got this thread lock down right? I mean sure there wasn't anything in the rules about can't necroing threads hell I just learn the term today. But when we make a new topic about it gets flag as spam.

On topic though, I hate that scene. Atleast have Shepard and his/her squadmates trap behind something only to break through to late to do something. But even then Thane should just slip behind Kai Leng and snap his neck like he always done.

It's because if Shepard got involved, Kai Leng would just say "It's time to finish this" before backhanding Thane, causing Thane to then knock Shepard over as well.

Cutscene Incompetence is the only real reason.

a very unfortunate blemish that could have easily been fixed by, say, a Cerb squad pinning Shep and his squad down with fire.
