Was the squad just filing their nails? What a contrived and pointless happening.

I don't know about you... but I had to go to the bathroom, I felt Thane had it under control. Lol
But honestly I wonder the same thing, I felt like there should have been an option to save his life.

I couldn't agree more. But the better question is what was Kirrahe doing? Being cloaked n' all. Could have helped. Kai Lame didn't know he was in the room either so. Missed opportunity for some variables eh?
Kirrahe alive + Loyal Thane + Talk to Thane before coup = Thane fights Kai , Kirrahe comes out of cloak and assists. Kai can't fight them both at once, he retreats, leaving both Kirrahe and Thane unscathed.
There’s no reason why this did not happen, it doesn't make sense that it didn't. If you didn’t talk to Thane, have him loyal or have Kirrahe alive in your import then yeah in that scenario it makes more sense that he would die during the fight. He would then be no different than every other ME2 cameo that can be killed depending on the variables. But there are none, not for Thane and that was just so damn LAZY.

It's a simple matter of Schroedinger's Kirrahe. If Thane is alive, for no particular reason, Kirrahe is never asked to guard the councillor. If Thane is dead, again for no reason, Kirrahe is asked to cloak escort the councillor around the Citadel all day, everyday.

But he must be, there are dead STG's everywhere why wouldn't Kirrahe NOT be there just because Thane around? Thane had nothing to do with the councillor , why would Thane being in hospital effect Kirrahe being asked to guard an important member of his own race? It doesn't make sense. "Just cos" isn't a reason.

That's the Schroedinger's part of the problem. A completely unrelated event causes both to happen. Observing the cat is unrelated to the cat being alive or dead, but it causes it to be one or the other regardless. Without it, it is just both. Similarly, if Thane is alive, Kirrahe is not present. Utterly unrelated, an example of Schroedinger's Cat and a generally poor way of making choices relevant.
