When now try to start ME2, it says...

"Failed to initalize the physics system. Please ensure you have an updated version of the PhysX Software installed."

I checked. I have the most current version of the software, but the game still doesn't start. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

ME2 is not compatible with new Physix version, reinstall the one on ME2 disk to play.

Which is kinda sad really... come on Bioware.

So what about if we bought ME2 on Steam?

you get to reinstall the game if you want to play, which is extremely annoying and shortsighted by Bioware.  You are going to have to decide which game you wish to play and do so, and will not be able to easily switch between them until a fix is found and implemented by either Bioware or Nvidea.

I am having issues here too. After installing ME3 I got the same message as OP. However, a reboot allowed me to launch the game. My issue now is that the first quest I tried (helping Liara on illium) crashes me instantly.

I'm guessing this is all the same issue, but I'm endlessly frustrated because the playthrough I was preparing for ME3 isn't finished yet. Now I have no suitable character to launch into ME3 with!

Would a simple reinstall of ME2 fix things or would I then have to subsequently reinstall ME3 afterwards as well?

Also let it be known, I'm using a Radeon 7970 HD card... This is my first non nvidea card so I don't know if that makes a difference.

Here's a brief update, for what it's worth. I brought this issue to the attention of the MassEffect twitter account people, so they are now aware of the bug. I have no idea when or if it will be addressed, but at least someone over there knows now!

PhysX is the same whether it runs on the CPU (AMD) or the GPU (nVIDIA).  IMO, for the time being, uninstall the ME3 Demo.  For what it's worth, I personally haven't purchased ME3, and I never download games, expansions, or extra cost content.  If it's not on a DVD, I don't buy it.  ME3 just hasn't rung any bells for me so far (ME-2 didn't, either, but I do own that one).

This would be better advice if I didn't have all the DLC and ME3 already hehe. I devoure all content Mass Effect related!

Much to my dismay, reinstalling ME2 did not fix this issue. I simply can't get it to work. MY character's are completely stuck because I crash consistently when trying to cross certain areas. The game is completely broken, thus I can't play ME 3 now :(

I have to say this is among the bigger letdowns I've experienced in a while, after years of waiting for this game to come out.

Thank you for the reply Laskov. Does this fix work for nvidea cards only though? I use a Radeon 7970.. I don't think we actually use physix.

I still suffer the symptoms though.

I recieved the same error message as the OP, but upon restarting my machine I could actually launch the game, but it will crash at specific thresholds.

For instance: After speaking with Liara on illium, and getting her terminal hacking quest, I noticed that the first terminal down from her office was not lighting up.

I continued past it to see if the others were the same. I crash everytime I try to pass the first kiosk to the right.

After a lot of experimenting, I have found small ways of coping so far. For instance in this situation, I loaded a save before picking up this quest, went back to Liara and skipped her quest and instead initiated the Shadow Broker DLC quest before leaving her office.

[Slightly ME2 Spoilerish] At the end of this segment, I encountered a similiar consistent crashing as I was trying to leave the Shadow Broker's ship. The only way to get off the ship was to restart the mission, beat the Shadow Broker again and choose the option that invites Liara back to the ship, which automatically brings you back to the Normandy. [Spoilerish end]

I've also noticed another symptom, but one that is much more livable. During dialogues, npc's often glitch out. Limbs will bend back on themselves, or heads will occaisionally be turned around. Slightly disturbing, but atleast it doesn't prevent me from playing the way the crashes do.

Please note: Before installing Mass Effect 3, neither ME1 or 2 had ever crashed a single time on my machine.

There is not now anyone from either Bioware or EA assigned to do anything of the kind in this forum.

Okay it seems like the issue people are having (myself included) is that their Mass Effect 3 install gave them a botched Physix install.

I use a Radeon card, and this worked for me too.

I recommend first uninstalling your current physix version. (As an aside, when i went for my uninstall, my physix was 89.9 megs.)

I didn't even bother downloading anything. I just fired up ME2 and it auto installs physix when you launch it. (This install of physix was 120 megs).

Now my ME2 runs completely smooth again, no glitches and no crashes.

Hope this helps! And thanks to @Laskov for pointing me in this direction.

The problem is that the version of the PhysX system software that came with ME2 is not compatible to use for ME3. The version of the PhysX system that comes with ME3 is not compatible with ME2. The only way I have found to move between the 2 games is to reinstall the version of the PhysX system software that comes with the game you want to play, play, then install the version that comes with the other game to play that one. This was an issue even after the release of the ME3 demo which somehow made it into the full version of ME3. Annoying as it is I don't see it as a priority to be fixed, as the best fix would probably be to patch ME2 to work with the version of the PhysX system software that ME3 requires to ensure compatibility. Probably an issue for many companies now with the heavier focus on consoles, where this issue is not so prominent, or doesn't exist at all. Hope a fix will be forth coming but I doubt it will be addressed in the near future.

lol just ran into that issue as well, I am gonna try rebooting it. I wanted to play me 3 when I realized I forgot to play the shadowbroker and overlord missions lol should have finished them entirely before installing it but still, quite an oversight from Bioware.

Yep, @White_Jedi has it right there. Still, as frustrating as it is, an install of PhysX takes a few moments - on my machine less than a second actually (gotta love SSD's!) while reinstalling Mass Effect 2 from steam can take an afternoon.

So it's not so terrible in some ways!

After reading this thread I went and checked to see if I  could play ME 2 with the ME3 demo and ME3 installed. Yep, I still can with no problem, except for the annoying EA servers are dissconnected message. Takes a bit to get to the main menu, but still works just fine. All except for the ME 3 demo are  also physical copies.

@Jononarf Not everyone has this issue. I asked my friend to check his ME2 as well when i had the issue and he had no problems. Some people just got unlucky and got a corrupted Physix download with their install.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if when you tried to play for a bit you noticed physix crazies. People freaking out in dialogues, or crashes at certain random points. There does seem to be an incompatibility in the physx versions.

I loaded a random save on the Normandy and talked to several people. Then I started a new character with the Genesis add on and played to where Miranda shoots that doctor. If crashes occur, oh well. This is part of PC gaming.

My suggestion is to de-install everything then re install starting even with ME 1, then 2, then 3. Unless all digital then screw that. Too much waiting.

@Jononarf I understand where you're coming from. It doesn't seem like it's a big deal. Just the occasional crash.

That's not really the case though. The game will repeatedly and consistently crash at certain random points. For instance, my character got permanently stuck in the Shadow Broker's lair because every time I tried to leave, I crashed, no matter what. Yet, I was able to play through all the Shadow Broker content leading up to it without issues- so it seemed like it was all fine and dandy.

Re-installing did nothing to fix this. It isn't an issue with the game files. It's a physx issue.
