Tali's picture on the Normandy is a stock photo. (Laziness at it's peak)

just wondering...anyone know what the model has had to say about this? does she even know?
I'd like to expand upon this, please.
How do we know that the model wasn't a friend/relative of somebody at BioWare, or perhaps had done a shoot for them and was allowed to post the original online while they worked on the in-game version?

Fans would rage that there was NO face reveal.
Fans would/are raging over a face reveal.
Get a freakin' grip on yourselves this is getting ridiculous. I hope BioWare just stops listening to fans altogether and just continues making games that they want to make.
The "fan" bull**** that goes on here is ridiculous.

Not likely if it's from a photo library. Probably just a boggo shoot with a regular photographic model who signed release forms and got paid by the photographer at the time, who in turn has now been paid by BioWare for its use. Lazy and cheap aren't necessarily the same thing, though this is still a bit cheap since it appears to be a royalty free image so the photographer won't be getting an amount per game sold. It's just not as cheap as being suggested here.MRedfield wrote...

That thing sailing over your head right now? That was the point. Sorry you missed it!
People are not upset that they revealed her face and they hate the face. They are upset because they revealed her face and it was a 5 minute photoshop of a stock image. Calling out lack of creativity has zero to do with "damned if you do, damned if you don't."

My bigger problem is that they did the reveal via a low res photo next to your bed. I (and I'm betting we) wanted to see her (or a quarian) and see them emote and speak the same way every other character we travel with does.
Given the options, I would have rather had no face reveal than the way they did it.

Normally, I would agree, but they didn't even put forth any effort to creating a Quarian face. Instead, they ripped off a copyright-free photo off of the Internet and spent a few minutes in photoshop. If I were a Tali fan, I would insanely pissed, too.

Did they tell the Tali fanbase that they did this or did somebody actually find this out on their own by accident?
-edit-
On a lighter note... at least the girl is cute.

Royalty free isn't the same thing as copyright free, and I doubt there was any ripping off as such. I'm sure they paid the going rate to use the image, it's just that being a royalty free image they don't need to pay for each use. To be fair to BioWare that could open a huge can of worms depending on how you define each use. Would be each copy of the game or each time it appears in the game, or even (worst case scenario for them but absolute dream for the rights holder to the image) every time a player triggers the scene in which it appears meaning a fee per playthrough, so basically each playthrough would mean BioWare paying a fee. That's probably extreme and I'd hope that copyright law hasn't got that retarded yet, but going for a royalty free image where they only have to pay one fee one time makes perfect business sense both to BioWare and gamers since a per game arrangement would likely add a few dollars to the price of each copy of the game.NovinhaShepard wrote...

Really the only objection I'd make is that it's lazy. It's lazy to just find a photo of a relatively exotic looking girl and pshop out two of her fingers and pshop in some Star Trek Alien Of The Week style marks on her face. It's almost like it was decided that there'd be a Tali face reveal early on but everyone forgot about until the last minute and it was too late to get one of their own artists to do something original. It's a matter of opinion but I also think it's lousy writing to have a reveal at all. For Pete's sake, we have two and a bit games telling us how taking their masks and suits off is a huge deal for Quarians even at home in the Migrant Fleet and now we're supposed to believe that Tali just casually desuited for a happy snap for Shepard? Come on! It's brown and warm, you get it from bulls, and I'm calling it.
Better to have preserved the mystery and not done a reveal at all. It's like the last Star Wars film (the originals) - when Darth Vader's mask came off and there was this old out of shape guy underneath .... even though they acted the hell out of that scene seeing that after all the menace Darth Vader actually looked like the least scary guy in the retirement home nearly killed that movie for me. Same thing here. The ME2 scene where she took of her mask but didn't quite get to see her was nicely done, and for my money they should have done something similar, maybe revealing just a little more, but otherwise left the details up to the imagination of the player.

Mass Effect 3 is a big, popular, and amazing game that was worth the weight. I wouldn't be surprised if this is fan cosplay of Tali.
Here is your proof.
"Programmer 1: Uh oh. Guys, we need Tali's face by tomorrow.Programmer 2: Just get a stock image off the Web, make it look like a... night elf?Programmer 3: Couldn't we use one of the hundred fanart images that actually look like they could be quarians?Programmer 2: Too much work - need to be at Gary's party in a couple hours.Programmer 1: What if someone catches on?Programmer 3: Put in some lens flare - no one'll know the difference.FYI, turns out we do. Thanks for trolling us, BioWare."
Found this quote up there. I actually like Tali's face, but I really wish they'd have used a more original design.
