Hello everyone, this is my first playthrough on Dragon Age and absolutely loving it, possibly more than KOTOR, one of my favorite games of all time.
Well, I'm at a crossroads. In what very little time I've spent reading the forums, I've read that Arcane Warriors are both very powerful and fun. I haven't read anything on Blood Mages, but they also look and seem to be exciting and powerful, although I really don't know much more than what the description shows.
I probably would've selected Arcane Warrior, but for two reasons:
One, I happen to have just unlocked being a Blood Mage. I'm extremely tempted to do so, but it's very early in the game and I know this kind of decision can really screw me over later in the game.
Two, I tend to get bored with Melee classes. Bioware has done a pretty good job of adding a little spice to the otherwise dreadully boring melee classes in other games, (especially the Warrior/Tank role), and I may be wrong, but it seems that the Arcane Warrior is just a tank with some magic thrown in.
If anyone else feels the same about melee/tank classes, then does the Arcane Warrior satisfy you?
That's about it, please post any thoughts, thanks!
Blood Mage or Arcane Warrior?

Arcane Warrior is boring (personal opinion). I gave up on my Arcane Warrior on Hard difficulty about 15 hours in because it was just THAT boring and easy. Arcane Warrior = tons of sustained abilities and Auto-attack. That's it. After my entire party wiped on a boss and my Arcane Warrior solo'd it with no trouble I realized it was going to be boring and far too easy (AW is really OP).

I haven't played an AW yet (next mage playthrough), but I've done two Blood Mages. I've found them to be incredibly fun, and that specialization probably defines the character's playstyle more than any other, except for maybe Arcane Warrior. >.> Plus, if you pick up death siphon, you can cast until you're out of mana, click on blood magic and death siphon, cast until you're back to full mana (doesn't take long with high magic) and then turn blood magic off again. No need to drain teammates' health, no downtime. On fights with fewer, more powerful mobs, you may need to juggle the party's health and your mana a bit, but just get heal and that's not much of a problem.
One thing you should know about Arcane Warrior is that some spells require you to put away your weapon before they can be cast. If you're using a staff you can avoid this, or you can make one slot a staff and one a weapon or weapon/shield and toggle back and forth. Also, not all spells do this and there's a list floating around the forums somewhere. So not too hard to get around, but something to keep in mind.

Why not just do both? An arcane blood mage.

Only problem with soloing the game is the romance option is...limited.

Arcane warrior SUCKS
I tried it once and its basically useless
All it does is put you in the front lines as a gimp warrior or put you in the back as a gimp mage
Arcane warrior essentially makes a half assed warrior and a half assed mage rolled into 1 character
Shapeshifter is also a pile of crap too
Spirit healer/Blood mage FTW , ironic combo isn't it? lol

Hmm maybe I should play 2 Blood Mages instead then.
Though I only wanted AW for their better defense, not because I actually wanted to swing a sword with them hehe.

AW is nice ...
it perfectly fittet to my 1st walkthrough
I like mages with nice great 2handweapons ... wearing a robe and casting some nice spells its quite of fun
you just have to aware of activating all abilities...

No. What good should that do?
