My understanding is that levels cap at 20. At least that is the impression I got from the strategy guide.

I think the strategy guide assumes you will end your adventure around level 20, and is written accordingly. Even if there is a hard cap it will be removed pretty quickly with a fan mod.

Damn it, not even the manual mentions whether or not you can backstab with a bow.

No Level Cap confirmed, but with the diminishing system most people hit 18-22 it seems.

Some other interesting tidbits:

Combat Tactics system is less like the Neverwinter Nights AI system and reminds me more of the Final Fantasy 11 system. Very interesting turn, but probably a good one with a game like this.

There are also Spell Combos:

"When two opposing or complementary spells collide, the effects can be unusual and potent. There are 10 possible spell combinations in the game. Only a few of these are hinted at ahead of time—for the most part, you must find them for yourself. Once you have discovered a spell combination, a description of how to replicate the effect appears in your codex."

This also seems like a JRPG concept implemented in this game.

Another interesting thing is the Tactic Slot is actually a slot for AI behavior, if you prefer not to control other party members. More potent Tactic ability = more tactic slots to customize "Gambits" (FFXII) for each of your characters. I might try that, having to micro-manage everyone can be boring.

Gone are the days of decent, informative manuals in my opinion - companies (EA especially won't put any thought or creativity into them anymore.

Remember the BG2 manual? Holy smokes, we need more like that. Spells, character info, locations... and friggin' spiral bound so it would lie flat! Those were the days.

If there is no level cap why does the strategy guide tell you to be carefull where you put our put your skill points because they are limited. If you can continue to level up endlessly it would stand to reason that you would continue to gain skill points.

because you've got to be careful how to spend them and make sure you dont mess up and get moves that wont help you particularly at the time when you find other moves might help you better its allll tactical ;)

Maybe because there is a limited amount of XP to be earned before the end of the game?

If there is a limitied amount of XP then that would by default limit or cap your level, because once you have earned all the xp it would be impossible to level up further. As far as tactics it would be a mute point with an unlimited level. You would be able to max out all your skills and abilities. Yet the book suggests that there are only 7-9 skill points available.

There's no level cap because there doesn't need to be.

As has been said above, the game isn't open-ended. That means that after a certain point you will have simply done everything there is to do (with the exception of random ambushes while travelling between regions).

From what I have read, the games enemies do not respawn(unless it is part of an event). So the only real way to get higher levels is to go out of your way to do all of the secondary content.

...and that's why I'm really hoping that we see some awesometastic story-driven mods.

There is no definite level cap, but there is a finite amount of xp in the game.

One thing I read (a dev I think) said that you will finish the game on lvl 18-22 or something like that.

It's a little stricter than that. The maximum value the XP parameter in the game as it ships can take is 186001 which corresponds to level 25. Thus, even if you found an infinite XP loop (or just cheated), you would not be able to go higher based on XP alone. Of course, this is just a simple variable that can be changed by either modders or Bioware itself should it ever release enough DLC to exceed this amount.

Since we know theres no hard cap the next question is: does anything respawn? Any repeatable content whatsoever?
