Not bashing Dragon Age. I've done three-four playthroughs already and I love the game. But I cant be the only one who thinks this part of the mages origin is super lame...

So I was replaying the mages origin, and I've already told on jowan and sided with him before, so I figured that this time around I would just not get involved. I was like
"Hey jowan, you're on your own man but no worries, I wont tell on you"

So I'd figured I'd do just that. Not tell on him. Not get involved. So I went to talk to irving and denied knowing anything. Kept denying until finally he was like, what are his plans? and my only options are...

"He is going to destroy his phylactory"
"He wanted me to help him escape, but I refused."

And thats it. Lame.

So I told on him, and he's like go with him so we can catch lily. And I wanted to be like,
"Nah man, dont bring her into this."
But then my only options are....(Paraphrased)

"I don't want to do this, but I will"
"Sure, I'll do it"
"Omg yes I would love to do this"

Again. Lame.

So then I go to jowan. I figured I'd be like, hey man, They are on to you. But I can't. My only options are to not help him sit around the tower for the next 80 hours that could be spent stopping the blight, or say "Sure man, I was jking, I'll help" and then betray him.

Lame.

I was so frustrated I quit playing. Ima give dalish elf a shot, I havnt beat the game with that one yet.

I have to agree with this part, there really is NO other option then to go into the Basement and help Jowan break his Phylactery. Why can't I just tell Duncan that I want to be a Grey Warden and help serve against the Blight not help Jowan free himself of the Chantry?

Then again, asking that is like asking why I can't just go to Orlais and let Ferelden fall because the so called 'Regent' obviously doesn't want my help.

Well, according to plot, Jowan has been a lifelong friend. You're lame for wanting to leave a bro hangin' like that.

That is not proper brotocol.

I chose to tell Irving about it after I gave this a considerable amount of thought so I told Jowan I'd think about it and gladly agreed to help Irving stop them....good thing too....the bastard turned out to be a blood mage that wrecked plenty of havok later on. An emotionally unstable mage on the loose is a very dangerous thing indeed.

Firstly Irving knows all and denying it just makes him tell you to suck it up and do your duty.

Second you can tell Jowan after you get to the phylactery.

Still make's me ask the question as to why I have to be considered a 'Bro' to him? Who's to say my mage isn't an Anti-social Emo who like's to make thing's burn and secretly meets with Lilly 'after' Jowan leaves her?

There are just a lot of linear lines within this specific Origin that 'forces' you into something that your character may or may not be able to fit into the role for. The other origins are somewhat the same but the Mage's gives you and 'option' to just think about it but then comes back later and says no no you have to do it to continue on.

Still wish I could leave to Orlais and see what would happen to Loghains so 'assured' face when he see's the Arch-demon headed for his precious city.

I feel that the Mage Origin could have been a lot better. The main attraction seems to be the Harrowing, which is played up as some very distressing event that quite often takes the lives of those who partake in it.

However, it's a brief jaunt for you, over in less then ten minutes. The rest of the origin is spent fretting away your time with this nuisance of a friend that seems rather inconsequential. Personally, I think that Jowan should have started off the origin, you're introduced to his little dilemna and wrap it up however you want before entering the Fade to face your demon. The Fade can then be the longer, more involved 'dungeon' aspect.

Hell, my dream version of the Mage Origin has the 'Harrowing' pretty obvious like it is now, only when you wake up in your bed you're still in the Fade, it's just the demon faking the real world and only through inconsistencies in the behaviour of the characters you've already met do you realize that you're still partaking in the Harrowing. Could have some obvious hints like Owain is not tending the shop (since demons can't effect Tranquil so the demon probably isn't aware they exist) or Jowan is still kicking around the tower despite running away.

Duncan then recruits you because of how well you dealt with Jowan but, more importantly, that you had such a 'clean' Harrowing.

My first time playing through as a mage, I considered Jowan's request to destroy the phlactery as an ulterior motive; that he may already be possessed by a demon or was striking a deal, that freedom would mean to destroy the phial of blood. But, I over-thought the situation and was a bit disappointed. I find it difficult to believe that Jowan would be willing to risk the reputations and lives of the main character and Lilly, to avoid becoming tranquil. Then again, I also take issue that Irving and the templar-leader-guy somehow remained unaware of all the blood magic being practiced in secret.

I believe Irving was aware of the entire situation with Jowan but he didn't want Lilly to go unpunished for what she did. I did however know that he was incapable of passing the Harrowing the first time I met him. Too much belief in what he hears and sees...even from the PC.

To be fair, they did know about a fair amount of the blood magic. However, Uldred was the one really rearing the clutch of blood mages and he was also the one in charge of hunting the blood mages down. So, needless to say, he gave up a few to hide the many in order to make his bid for power later.

Completely agree. I got into a loop with Irving, where if you refuse to do what he wants, he says something along the lines of "Don't forsake your duties to the Circle" and asks the question again, with options being "Ok" and following the rails, or saying "No" and following a flow chart back to square one.

It's a "But thou must!" situation, in which artificial restrictions only let you do things the way BioWare wants you to do them.

If you play your cards right, you can send Jowan into the Fade to save Conner at Redcliffe Castle.
If you have him talk every chance he gets in the Fade, he will never give in to the demon.
In a way, that was Jowan's Harrowing, which he easily passes.

There isn't an option to just say screw it and hang out in your bunk in the tower wooing random apprentices either, that's called plot. You have options within the borders of the plot, you don't have the option to ignore it completely, unless you just leave the game running and go do something else I suppose. Basicaly... it's not a free roaming open world game, it's a plot driven one.

Sooo..

U're willing to have a nice family in human noble origins.

U're willing to have a good cousin soris and shanni in city elf origins.

U're willing to have a nice sister in dwarf commoner origins

U're willing to have a good friend temlen in dalish origins

U're willing to have 2 brothers and a father in dwarf noble origins.

But U can't accept that bioware scripted a good friend for you in mage origins?

I did feel a little railbroaded when Irving went all Bro McCarthy on me and I had to reveal Jowan's plan.

Er, sorry.

Anyway, I would at least have liked the option to lie through my teeth to Irving, whether he believes me or not.
