Hey, in the dwarf commoner you get a good bro too.

And your mom takes the worst mom of the year award, easy.

This thread is a lie: the only true origin bros in this game are Gorim and Dwarf Noble.

They all but brofist at the jail.

I did feel a little railbroaded when Irving went all Bro McCarthy on me and I had to reveal Jowan's plan.

Er, sorry.

Anyway, I would at least have liked the option to lie through my teeth to Irving, whether he believes me or not.

Umm you can until he basically judt gets really pissed and tells you he is OZ and knows everything.

The mage origin fails to deliver for me bcause of Jowan. He is such a whiny, self-absorbed, vapid twit that I honestly cannot imagine him and any character of mine being remotely true friends. I love the human noble's family, I love Gorim and felt the sibling rivalry in the dwarven noble origin, and I like the Dalish clan well enough -- but Jowan? Ugh! No emotional involvement except annoyance, and the whole setup feels extremely railroaded and artificial.

I admit I was biased against him because I met him first at Redcliffe with my warrior. But even without that, I'd have disliked his personality -- and been suspicious of him big time from the word go. Why? Because one of the very first things he said is something along the likes of "they are holding me back". Right. That is one of the biggest, most glaring signs of falling to the dark side.

gotta agree with korva, i can get the pc being friends with all the "friends" from the other origins, excepting male city elf perhaps, because they are alright and likeable chars. and even in the city elf origin you can be a complete arse to your mate and leave him hangin at the end. jowan outside of the origins however IS alright, i still didnt like him because how much he'd screwed things up but he was much more likeable at redcliffe. in the origins hes such a whiny **** that nobody'd ever be a good friend of his, especially not good enough to risk all like you have to. i'd betray him every time, whther rp'ing good, evil or neutral char, because i dont like him, even though morally helping him is, in my mind, the right choice.

Well I kind of got a feeling during my mages origin that Jowan wasn't always as whiny as shows to be. It more seems like he feels painted in a corner and can't find a way out that provokes his current attitude. Even in Redcliff he seems different than in the origin, and he is still somewhat with his back to the wall.

As far as the "holding me back" thing, I can really see that as being a big problem with the circle, being that they have the chantry over their shoulder all the time there is probably a lot of that with anyone who has half a brain actually being held back.

Well, according to plot, Jowan has been a lifelong friend. You're lame for wanting to leave a bro hangin' like that.
That is not proper brotocol.

I gutted my bro in the dungeons of Redcliff in cold blood after using him to learn blood magic.
Was that good or bad acording to the brotocol?

Jowan seemed the least appealing to me because he was also the most helpless, Gorim in the Dwarf Noble origin is by your side the entire time and at least tries to pull his weight,, (and even solves some problems for you.) He's the sort of friend you expect to have your back. Jowan on the other hand failed to endear himself to me because his first conversation with the pc is "Tell me how to pass the harrowing, they're afraid I'm too powerful for mine" It didn't seem like he was concerned for the PCs safety, and granted he may just not be interested in the PCs well-being, it seems like he's supposed to be.

It would have worked better for me if he had been worried about the PC first, then tried to cheer them up, or reminisce about their classtime together since the PC is moving upstairs(rather than just saying"oh you're gonna go live upstairs") and then approach him later to ask about the harrowing. I understand that the ending has to feel inevitable but I think foreshadowing his "bloodmage side" affinity that early got in the way of characterizing him as a friend or even classmate of the PC.

If he wasn't always this whiny and selfish I'd at least like to see the tail end of that transition, he tries to help you move your things, drops something and gets frustrated which could lead to him confessing his frustration over not getting to the harrowing., so we see him as a friend first, and then get some sort of transition from him being a friend to being a whiny twit that needs the PC to save his relationship. I don't mind him being whiny or frustrated, I just want to be able to see him get there, maybe he can even appeal to the PC if he's ever wanted to be free of the chantry or circle.

Ah well, its moot at this point, since the game is published all we can do is hope that the writers are still watching for what did and did not work about the jowan story for future reference.

At least Jowan redeems himself with the "ambiguous garbage" remark. Ah, putting up with his whining was well worth it, just for that.

Speak with the statue in the repository, at the end of the mage origin.

Yeah, I played as a mage the first time through...and I feel that it doesn't have the same emotional tug that say....the city elf or the noble origins have. Sure, they tell you, you have been life long friends...but it doesn't mean anything. With the noble origins...everyone has family and can understand what it feels like to loose that. And having your betrothed kidnapped to be raped? Crap, that sucks.

I helped Jowan out...and felt that it was not a good idea right from the beginning...and when I ran into him in redcliffe, I just wanted to kill him. Same with the Sacred Ashes...as a noble seeing my father...wow, I think I shed a tear...as a mage seeing Jowan, I rolled my eyes.

I actually think it fits better than most think. Mages are cold and uncaring, they kind of have to be. The setting is such that you can't really be "family" with everyone cause you don't know just who will pass the harrowing or be made tranquil. I don't really get the same feel of warm and fuzzy with the tower as any other origin, and really I think it fits.
