I just bought the Black Widow and upgraded it to the same level I have my Mantis rifle upgraded to (IV) and...

The Black Widow is almost twice as heavy, has almost identical stats in every category, and does less damage than the Widow. Yes, I made sure to equip the same mods. The Widow does less damage. Is anyone else seeing the same thing? I feel like I just flushed 250k down the drain - I didnt save the game before I bought it (stupid of me).

Edit: The game saves everytime I visit the citadel so I was able to get my 250k back. Still, I want to know if anyone else is seeing the same thing I am.

Ah, thanks for that. I went to the spectre shooting range and checked it out. This definitely makes the Widow more attractive, but the gigantic weight almost halved my recharge time % on powers. I'll have to play around and see what I prefer.

The Mantis is superior imo. It weighs almost nothing when maxed out, allowing you to almost quite litterally spam Cloak. It 'feels' faster, though I admit that could be total nonsense simply due to me having used it for most of the game. It does a teensy bit of damage less than the Black Widow, but Cloak + Headshot makes that almost a completely moot point (ie: dead is dead). Depending on load, it has almost three times the ammo capacity of the Black Widow as well. Ammo is generally not in terrible supply, but it's still nice to never have to worry about it as I had 31 rounds in my Mantis by the final part of the game.

That said, the Mantis is essentially a 'cheat' weapon in that I'm not sure you have it if you were to just start a fresh new game, and not import a ME 2 save. So, it's possible for some players, the Black Widow makes sense.

The Widow is better than the Mantis in all aspects aside from damage, weight and accuracy. The Mantis is lighter, and they are equally accurate. The Mantis does more damage and the Widow has greater ammo capacity and rate of fire; it shoots 3 shots per clip, whereas the Mantis only shoots one.

So the only situations in which the Mantis is superior is if you are concerned about weight or if you prefer the miniscule increase in damage over the Widow's increased rate of fire.

What situation are you not concerned about weight in, though? The only one I can imagine is if you're already so loaded down with various weapons that your recharge time is terrible, and thus you're not using any of your powers.

You can always get faster recharge with less weight, even if you aren't overburdened.

Black Widow is the best sniper rifle in the game. No other sniper rifle is close when it comes to killing whole groups of enemies or taking down tough targer (e.g. Banshee).

a) It can still one shot regular mook

B) You can get off two shots while you are cloaked, therefore it outdamages both Widow and Javelin (you can actually get off 2 shots AND Incinerate if you are quick)

c) With Black Widow V, I had +118% recharge bonus, this is more than good enough to ensure survavibility.

The little bit that i have played, right now my current preferred sniper rifle is the viper. Then again I had a viper glued to my hip during ME2

You get a Mantis about ten seconds after landing on Mars in the prologue.

Widow penetrates cover/guardians naturally, freeing a mod spot

As for what someone said about not having the Mantis in a NEW game, I'm pretty sure you still will. All the old weapons and armor are available. I can't for sure say the Blood Dragon is, but I can tell you that I do not have Terminus, Inferno or Collector armor in ME 2, but I can get them in ME3 from the shops.

There is also an original widow in the game that you can pick up, which overpowers the mantis by quite a bit(like 100~200 base damage) if you look at the stats in coalesced file
