What is "that Mass Effect feeling?"graciegrace wrote...
I don't really have that "Mass Effect" feeling yet, but the ME2 didn't have it either for me the first time I played it. Now it feels like ME, so I'm expecting 3 will be the same by the end of this playthrough/start of my next.
This is my first time playing ME completely blind, so that might be part of it. Usually I have some sort of guide, this time I'm avoiding that.
Let me preface what I am about to say by saying that I very much enjoy all of the ME games. That said, the story for the first game and the series is largely the same as the overarching story that takes place in Star Control 2 & 3. The writing, story, production values, music, direction, etc were all great in ME1, but to be honest the game play was pretty close to mediocre. Toward the middle of the game, there was very little danger or urgency in battles. You could wade in with immunity and a good heatsink on your assault rifle and never worry about dying or overheating your gun. Levels were VERY repetitive. Every side mission consisted of cookie cutter prefabbed buildings and mine shafts, as well as endlessly driving around boring computer generated terrain in the MAKO.
ME2 changed that. It kept most of the good stuff from ME1. Got rid of most of the bad stuff or improved it. Yes the story and direction were a bit different, but the gameplay was vastly improved. There was a sense of urgency in battle. You couldn't just hold down your fire button. You couldn't wade in with immunity and not break a sweat. The music was even better IMO. The new Normandy and its interior was amazing. Nearly every single level/mission is original or changed enough in some way that you don't think JFC here we go again.
ME3 so far has been pretty amazing in its own right IMO. I am about 18 hours in. Seeing the battles are amazing. Production values are simply mind blowing. The music is great as usual. The SHTF and the story is very good so far and you feel like you really are directing a war effort. It is definitely Mass Effect worthy in my opinion. My complaints are very few - no N7 Warfare Gear DLC for me. Cover system is clunky (I freaking roll all over the place sometimes trying to get out of cover... sometimes right into the open only to be shot). Don't care for some of the Normandy interior changes (especially the path to the war room). Quest tracking is virtually non existent and they don't always give you very good clues as to where to go (mostly on the Citadel). There's no chance to say "I #*$#*()@ TOLD YOU SO YOU @#*($@#U(*@#@# MORONIC @#*$@#$3@!* AND NOW WE ARE #*$(@#@#( THANKS TO YOUR IGNORANT *#@$@#(@#(*#" etc. Those are relatively small gripes though and the game is amazing despite them.

One thing I'm seeing occassionally is the notion the game was rushed or the dev team didn't try as hard somehow. It's disheartening to see that because I can tell you the development team worked *incredibly* hard on the game, including a ton of personal sacrifice (hours worked, holidays skipped etc). This was a labor of love for the team and we're all very proud of what has been accomplished. There are bugs that got through (face import. we know) but they are being investigated for fixing etc.
I don't think it's meant to be a personal attack on the devs. I think the majority of people understand how huge an undertaking it is to make a game like this. But there seems to be a fundamental disconnect between what fans of the previous games want to see in a sequel and what the devs think is cool or an improvement. We saw the same thing happen with Dragon Age 2. I'm sure the devs worked extremely hard on it, and it was objectively a pretty good game - but it wasn't the game that (very many) fans of DAO wanted to play.
I'm sure we all know that you guys have done this as a labour of love, but we still have the right to be disappointed if it's not the game we wanted to play. I guess everyone has different ideas about what that game should be.
This is the problem in a nutshell.
As for the face import bug. The lack of official response for an entire week on the issue was inexcusable. People asked politely day after day and were met with either silence, or worse, carefully worded responses that seemed to indicate there was no problem but when scrutinized more closely were actually answers to a different (unasked) question. When clarification of the response was sought it was simply ignored. There are multiple examples of this through-out the big face import thread.
There was surely an executive marketing order made by a small group for everyone to keep quiet on this until after release, however, I have still lost a lot of respect for Bioware as a whole over this.

It woud be nice if Bioware would show the same dedication (or at least show some sign that you care about customers at all) when it comes down to known problems that have been addressed in dozens of threads all over the forum. To point out only two of them:
- lack of FOV adjustability
- excessive keybinding to the spacebar
I completely understand that Bioware may not be able to paste an answer in every single thread since topics like these two come up every day. But when I read the 37th topic about a horribly narrow FOV and Bioware continues to completely ignore the topic and there still is not even a single statement regarding this issue, then the people sure will be pissed off.
I have yet to see a professional ME3 review that does not mention the controls/key binding to be messy and in need of improvement. That said: I still haven't seen the slightest effort to address the problem on the part of Bioware whatsoever, nor is there any statement on whether the issue will be addressed at all.
I am aware that Mass Effect is a console port and both the above mentioned problems originate therein. But if you just don't care about PC customers, I expect you at least, to be honest about it.

I can tell. There is a boatload of stuff in here that is an improvement over ME1 and ME2 (graphics, sound, area layout, combat, details, class progression, cinematic presentation, etc...). It just looks like the conversation choices, which made the original game so immersive for me, seems to have suffered.
That's what has to happen for it to appeal to a broader audience.
I see what you're getting it, but that compromise for appeal was already made with the introduction of modes. The stream-lined auto-dialogue of ME3 is being criticised because it detracts from characterisation, immersion and overall emotional investment into the series. The character you are is no longer who you want him to be but forced into something else.
They could have completely maintained the Mass Effect conversation quality through RPG mode and easily delegated the stream-lined auto-dialogue to action mode. It would've maintained the RPG quality and immersion for long standing fans of the series, and action mode would have broadened the appeal of the game to an audience who are looking for an intense action roller-coaster.
Best of both worlds, really. I don't think there should have been a compromise on this front, clearly Bioware created these modes so they didn't alienate certain player groups from enjoying the aspect they like most, it's just that they didn't seem to carry on the standard for the RPG elements into this installment.
It's still going to be a good game, just disappointing in certain spects.

I would not sweat it too much. I'd give you guys some guff for Dragon Age 2, but ME3 is amazing thus far. My biggest complaint is the unavailability of that cool N7 Defender Armor for me despite preordering the digital deluxe edition.Jarrett Lee wrote...

I'm loving it so far, the interactions between the characters are absolutely amazing, something you didnt get in ME2. The only thing that i could consider being "disappointed" about is that you have a lot less input in what Shepard says.
Took the words right out of my mouth.
On the other hand, the game does very well to give you the role you crafted from the first and second. You're not as free to say as you please, but your dialogue fits the situation and I find that character interaction is better in some aspects (no more Talk>Ask About Person>Receive Calibrations, just straight up talking if there's dialogue, Zaeed and Kasumi style dialogue to filler otherwise).
Another thing is probably just a personal gripe... I just dislike how gutted the Normandy SR2 feels now. Cerberus may not have made the ship very practical on the interior, but it did know how to keep aesthetics sharp.
Edit:
Did you check your email? I got my codes for the Raider, the Valkyrie, the Argus, and the N7 Defender Armor from codes they sent me by email. The rest was auto downloaded. Also check out the Alienware site for the Indra sniper rifle:Alien1099 wrote...

I know that this wasn't a rushed game but there are some minor flaws that could have been easilly fixed and I'm afraid they will hurt the overall product. I think like ME3; just like ME2, has a poor PC port that needs a couple of fixes like an FOV slider (this is a health concern as an FOV of 70 can cause motion sickness), menu shortcuts (J -> journal), high-res textures and improved key mapping (not everything on space bar). I haven't started playing yet but from what I've seen in the demo and gameplay footage the overall game looks great, but the PC version specifically feels and looks like a lazy port. I don't know if this is because of time limitations or low standards, but I'd love to see these issues adressed anyway.
I understand if some of the bigger issues like the enormous amount of auto-dialog can't be fixed. I'm simply disappointed that BioWare apparently didn't agree with the fans' concerns about Arrival's auto-dialog.
Also, why is there no text chat in co-op? Every multiplayer game has this so if time concerns weren't the issue, then what was?

Oh right, a few more minor flaws that also nudged at me. Shortcuts and keymapping would've been wonderful. The in game graphics on the game proper looks more polished than the demo, though there are still some low res textures here and there. Most notably is still Anderson's uniform

As for the game, I'm still immersing in it (or was until I had to go to bed to be able to function at work today). I don't have any issues so far, though I am only just arriving at the citadel the first time.
The only major issue I have is some of the lip syncing is off, a few of the acting scenes seem out of place and there is major jerkiness between scenes when selecting dialog options. Nothing I can't look beyond.
