Game Freezing Every Few Minutes

Alright, I am at wits end at this point. I have updated my drivers, I have uninstalled and reinstalled Origin, and I have turned off my internet browser so far. None of these have solved my problem. The issue I am having is, my game is freezing up every few minutes for at least 10+ seconds at a time. This happens during cutscenes, during gameplay, and during very well everything.

It is completely and utterly decimating my gameplay, when every few moments I have to endure a long pause in both action and cutscenes. I am still on Earth: Vancouver because of this problem. Worse still, it seems I am the only one who is having it so far, as browsing the forums has yielded very little.

I really am hoping here that someone has a fix, as I have nothing at this point. My graphics card and computer run this game perfectly on max settings, this problem aside.

For the sake of being complete in hopes of getting a quick solution, whatever it may be, here are my system specifications:

Geforce Galaxy GTS 250 card with updated drivers
AMD Phenom II X4 820 Processor 2.80GHz
8 gig RAM
64 Bit Windows 7 System

Shameless self bump. Damn game is still freezing/Not Responding every few minutes.

Another shameless self bump, in hopes that someone knows how to fix this absolutely ridiculous bug. I desperately want to say it has something to do with Origin being needed to play, as this never happened with previous Mass Effect games, but that would just be going out on a limb.

Still getting freezing/not responding issues every few minutes, during scenes, gameplay, whatever that starts every few minutes, and ends after a few seconds. Very disruptive. Very annoying. Very ridiculous.

I have something relatively similar, though not anywhere near the degree you have it . . . plus what I experience is either a temporary freeze, or an outright crash of the app (it's a bit like the roll the dice.

The only identical setup element like yours is Windows 7 x64 (SP1 and patched). I also have a Geforce card, though it is an EVGA 590. I was hopeful the 40MB update that downloaded today might help with this, but I get the application lock ups (or freezes) still. This appears to affect both SP and MP.

I have never had it outright crash, but it is constantly a temporary freeze. Happens every few minutes, give or take a few. It is enough to be extraordinarily disruptive and annoying, but not "game breaking" I suppose, but that depends on if you can stand a few seconds of freezing each time this happens.

I could be wrong in saying this, as I have not stared at the menu long enough, but this seems to always happen during gameplay and cutscenes and such, never during the main menu (start new game, resume, options, load game, etc. That, when you first boot up the game).

Again, it may happen there too, I just never looked long enough to find out. I have an extremely hard time believeing this is our hardware screwing us though.

Hey 'Challenger,

Could you PM me your dxdiag so I can take a look? Hopefully we can get this sorted out for you.

Ok so my issue seems to have stopped after turning off Spherical
Harmonic lighting and anistropic filtering. it also coincided with the
first mission after you leave the citadel. try that combination of
setting changes and see what happens

Another user said this fixed it for him. It didn't for me, but hell if anyone else is having this issue, it may help them.

I seem to also be having this issue, not 10+ second freezes but 1 or 2 seconds. Only started about 25 hours in...

I've been getting this consistently. It's not as bad as A Challenger's issue, but I'm getting pretty regular 1-2 second freezes every 5-10 minutes or so. It's more like frame skips than genuine freezes. The audio plays normally and doesn't lose sync, and the game has never crashed for me.

My setup is a Core i5-2500K, 4GB RAM, Radeon HD 6950 2GB (Catalyst 12.2 Preview drivers, but not the latest Pre-Certified release) and Windows 7 64-bit.

I'm getting some freezes too. More like once everything 10 minutes, though it happened more frequently the first time talking to the dlc squadmate. And completely froze once on the Citadel, had to reboot. I'm also on Win7 64bit. Running i5-2500k, 8GB, HD 7950 with the just released today 12.2 drivers.

To the above, this is exactly what happens to me (in terms of the time frame between freezes). It is every five to ten minutes give or take, then remains frozen (sound still playing for whatever scene was in effect at the time, but never going beyond the freeze) and then it goes back to normal at least five or six seconds later.

The user I quoted above said that Vancouver, Mars, and the Citadel gave him trouble, but it stopped afterwards. I also know this has nothing to do (at least in my case) my system. At this point, I'm wondering if this is something that just needs to be patched.

EDIT: Turns out it came back for him.

I have been having the exact same issues as A Challenger. Every 5 to 10 minutes the video will freeze, audio still going. It's worse during cutscenes and dialog than during combat, but can happen at any time. The only way I can get the video back is to CTRL-ALT-DEL and click on Task Manager... it then goes back to ME3 with working video.

I've tried changing video settings, video drivers, SLI enabled/disabled, and everything else I could think of.

My specs:
ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3
i7-2600 Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz LGA 1155
16GB DDR3 2133 PC3 17000
2 x ZOTAC GeForce GTX550 Ti AMP
2 x Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 128GB SSD RAID 0
Windows 7 64-Bit

Tried the last three NVidia GeForce driver versions 295.73, 285.62, and 280.26... same results.

...also updated, repaired, and re-downloaded game files multiple times.  Still no fix.

The only thing I can tell you Nomolos Voz, is that (at least for me) it does not occur in the main start up menu, and that I am sure like yourself, the game runs very smoothly, besides this issue. At this point I am ready to throw up my hands and say only a game patch will fix this, as I have done everything you have, and had it confirmed that my system is not the issue (as I thought it wasn't).

The only thing I haven't tried yet, to see if it works or not without freezing, is multiplayer mode.

EDIT: I have even put all my settings down to their lowest standard in Mass Effect 3's config editor, to no avail.

This was happening to me because I have AMD also and in bios Cool N Quiet was enabled. Turned it off and it never happened again. Cool N Quiet will throttle your cpu down to 800 mhz then back up. If you turn it off, it won't throttle it. Try it and let me know if it helps. Hopefully it helps someone. To get into bios just restart your computer and most likely you keep hitting DELETE key while it is loading.

Just wondering with most people, have you recently defragmented your hard disk which the game is installed on?

If the files are fragmented heavily then there is a possibility that game will lag as access times for data will be hampered due to heavy fragmentation.

And are most people overclocking hardware?

Would like to say to Nomoloz, both SSD's in raid 0? Hope you don't have a windows fart, because raid 0 would mean you would need to reinstall Windows again (since parts of a file is saved on one drive and the rest on the other drive/s). I would have them seperate, imho :)

I'll see if Cool N Quiet is enabled, and hell DAB, I have tried everything else. I have not defragmented my HD in awhile, so what have I to lose.

EDIT: Keeping Cool N Quiet as a last resort though, I've never had trouble with it yet, I'd rather not disable it until I am sure it'd stop this occasional seizing issue.

Try disabling origin there is an option in the origin client under the tab "in game" (translated so it might be named something else), where you can disable, it fixed some issues for people back in the demo.

Hey A Challenger, I can finally post...so the problem fixed it's self for me for hours last night. Then this morning I loaded up and it was back. I'm about to try the cool n quiet fix and see if that works. Everything else I've tried though (no fragmentation on the drive, turned origin client off, no overclocking etc.) For myself I've noticed it happens during dialogue, but not necessarily cut scenes. I've had it lock up during dialogue between two npc's while just running along cities, during combat dialogue, and most during dialogue cutscenes.

Some of the cutscenes are pre-rendered videos, with seperate audio tracks. Is your sound card driver up to date?

Yeah all audio is up to date, and it's not just an audio glitch. Sometimes my video glitches out too and I end up with massive tearing and texture bleed. It can reliably be fixed by alt tabbing out and back into the game.

edit: The screen tearing that is. The lockups are there for 10-20 seconds no matter what I do.

Hi guys i am now also experiencing the issue. This happened after I applied the "From Ashes" DLC
i thought that it stutters only during cut-scenes but when i got to gameplay prologue it stutters as well

i installed on launch day and have been playing multiplayer with no stutters at all. Now after applying the DLC the issue started happening

Specs:

Intel E8400 3.0
AMD HD 6850
4 Gig Ram
Win7 64bit

While its comforting to know I am not the only one experiencing this, I still haven't figured it out. I am hoping this is just something we all need to wait for a bug patch to fix, as I and others have already tried a lot to solve this.

Though Furia, unless by stuttering you didn't mean the same freezing/unfreezing I am receiving, you said that multiplayer is fine? If that is true, that means only campaign is having this freezing issue, as the start up menu is devoid of it, but everything inside campaign from my menu's to gameplay and dialogue scenes is afflicted (No cutscenes from what I can tell),

The only other thing I can suggest is turning off most of the effects, and set Anistropic to off. And then work your way up setting each on at a time.. until you find the culprit.

yeah, I didn't have any problems in menus either.

Had already tried all the suggestions provided so far.

Defrag not necessary, brand new drives and windows install.

Even tried running it without Origin running in the background at all (there's a way to alt-tab out of ME3 during certain cutscenes and close Origin, and go back into ME3 without it closing down automatically) ...thought maybe it was doing some anti-piracy checking every few minutes, even blocked all net traffic...   still had freezing.

Tonight I'm going to try swapping out my NVidia cards for an ATI card I have to see if that fixes the issue.  If not, I'll try another system I have, and then with the same video cards and see if I still have the issue.   I'll let you know how the troubleshooting goes...
