Thane, Mordin, Legion died for Shepard's mission & cause. These 3 characters get an excellent send off because they died willingly and as heroes.

They all had excellent death scenes.

Yeah, those three deaths were actually sad in a good way.  Not sad in a frustrating way like where the whole rest of my crew was left.  Those three got to feel satisfied at the end and help Shepard in their own ways, even if they weren't on the Normandy.  I also liked how some of them could die if you didn't do the right things to help them out.  I jus can't stand how the ME3 crew is just left stranded in nowhere.  Hey, Tali, I hope you liked Rannoch for the five minutes you were there.

His death is a very very good scene to watch though. Important to the plot.

Just come across his death ingame.
Actually hit me hard because that's almost how my mother died, (at home instead of in hospital) and I found what lead to it to be a good death for him.
In the final stages of the disease, and still stops a highly augmented Kai Leng from assassinating the Salarian Councilor, and gets to die in relative comfort and peace with his son and Sheperd by his side.

Kirrahe takes his place if he dies in ME2.

In some ways... I agree, but then a part of me is like... "Why the hell did I go through the trouble of making sure they survived the suicide mission if they were just going to die in ME3?!"

I think Bioware is Xenophobic :P

At least they sort of celebrate their exit. Unlike Kelley Chambers who dies with the player having a good chance of not noticing it: you learn that by listening to a dialogue in the refugee quarter where you meet Kelley before. She is not even mentioned at the wall of fame in the SR2.

I was about to think the same: "Hell, why did I take care for them in ME2?" when Grunt looked like he was going to die as well. I am not through so far with the first playthrough but until now Jacob, Miranda, Samara, Jack, Zhaeed, Tali, Garrus (of course), Grunt are still alive. I was very pleased with Jack's style of reappearence. Yes, to be a drill seargent suits her very well. She has all the talents needed for that job.

Does anyone know what happens in the assassination if both Thane and Kirrahe are dead?

Thane dies no matter who saves the counciler so it might as well be Thane going out like a boss.

Mordin does not have to die. Lie to the krogan about curing the genophage and Mordin will go to a secret research facility.
