The screenshots on the top are from yesterday and the row below them is from today. I didn't change anything in the game or on my computer. I've found lots of other instances of people complaining about the texture quality, but no one mentioning theirs being fine and then going horrible. Why would this happen? It's not really okay.

If you are gullible enough to trust Microsoft and allow them to change whatever they want to on your PC, whenever they want to, then that's what happened. Something they just added as an "upgrade" has to come back off again. Check the Add/Remove lists, and whatever is newest has to go.

Then turn off their access, and from now on, pick and choose what you want to add, and when to add it.

I had that because the configuration utility didn't recognise my GPU so repeatedly defaulted everything to low on startup. Lots of fun. Depending on how uber your system is, I'd recommend backing up your configuration file (Mass Effect 2\\BioGame\\Config\\PC\\Cooked) and running through these until you find some settings that strike the balance between aesthetics and performance:

once you've set up your config file as you like it, make a copy of it somewhere convenient and overwrite the one in "Mass Effect 2\\BioGame\\Config\\PC\\Cooked" directory before you play and launch the game straight from the binary (Origin Games\\Mass Effect 2\\Binaries\\masseffect2.exe). This stopped my textures reverting to low resolutions.

Hope that helps.

Neither of these helped. The only thing that changed in the time frame was an update to Windows Defender definitions which are impossible to uninstall. Is there really any chance that did it?

Theta, you had a texture problem and something in there fixed it? I made those changes and I think I did succesfully force some more detail in some things, but the textures stayed the same. That's unsurprising though as none of those options relate to texture quality... I think enable high poly characters just references the meshes.

The problem carried over into the third game, which makes it a much bigger problem. I think what I need to change is the min LOD texture settings in DefaultEngine.ini. These are the same options (and formatted the same) that fixed the same issue for other people in the first game, but they're in a different .ini for the second and third games and any changes I make just revert when I start the game. Anybody know if there's any way to make these changes stick? Gah, am I missing something or wouldn't this be a non-issue if the user could just set all the graphical options his or herself like most other PC games?

ADDENDUM: Solved, my Catalyst profiles reset without asking me.

ah, apologies. I thought one of them showed how you could redefine the minimum textures. Pleased you solved it regardless :)

Yeah thanks, some of those other options were elucidating regardless.
