This is the only part of the plot that confuses me. On the very first mission you see the boy in the vent and he dies in that ship. And then you proceed to have 3 dreams of the boy which he turns to flames. And on the third dream you see your self with the boy and then you both turn into flames.
And the last time you see the boy he is the citadel AI. Now was the boy even real? Did the citadel AI project the boy in sheppards head. Or did the citadel AI take on the form of the boy to comfort sheppard. Some one please explain!

Pretty sure the AI took the form of the boy. The kid really died IMO, and that haunted Shep. After all, the kid was on Earth, not the Citadel. Who really knows though in the end.

Yes true but what makes me think the boy could have been projected into Sheppards head. Is the admiral did not see or hear the boy. He didnt even ask Sheppard who are you talking to. And when he got in the ship he just kind of hopped in. Sure makes me wonder =)

The kid was never real.
The dreams were part of the indoctrination process. The oily shadows were reapers.
The kid is used by the AI because it's in Shep's head.
Or
The kid is whatever you want it to be.
