I know there are other topics about shapeshifters, but they're about a year or two old, so, I'm starting a new one.  One of the reasons may sound pretty silly, but I would've liked different forms and/or more, and some more abilities for the master shapeshifter forms.  I don't have too much of a problem with bear form from the little time I did spend as a shapeshifter, but I really disliked the spider and insect swarm.  I would've loved having a cat form, wolf form would be okay too, though I'm fine with keeping bear as long as that is improved a bit;  as much as I like the idea of shapeshifting into a drake or dragon, I think that might be a little op, if you know what I mean, same thing with demons other than in the fade.  I'm sure everyone has their reasons for why it isn't something "unrealistic" for shouldn't be something "uncommon" for shapeshifters to learned.   Since Morrigan hasn't learned any other forms from Flemeth (that we presently know of, except the dog form *spoiler* she leaves castle redcliffe in if you reject her offer. I'm assuming it is either something that would take many years to master, or it's impossible to learn and is something only an old god/abomination could develop.

As for playing a shapeshifter two times, one short and another the whole game, I couldn't figure out and maybe, didn't want to figure out how to use insect swarm.  I couldn't tell if it was even damaging the enemy.  I never really paid attention to how much damage I did, or maybe I did, but it was so long since I had played it; so damage wise, I'm not sure if it was supposed to inflict more damage than it currently is without mods.

I'm not really familiar with what type of mods are out there for, in this case, shapeshifting, or the mods that would fix the issues people are having or dislike about shapeshifting.  Can anyone list me some?

The shapeshifter specialization is broken, since the damage that you inflict in animal form is actually determined by your strength, dexterity, and the weapon that your Mage is equipped with. To have a successful shapeshifter Mage (without a mod), you'll need to invest skill points in strength and dexterity. This is called a "form centric mage". Unfortunately, the best that this mage can hope to be is a weak melee fighter. I agree that the swarm form wasn't the greatest. A cougar or a bobcat would have been good. Maybe there could have been a bunch of animal forms, and the pc could have chosen to learn a few of them.

For mods the usual site listed as a resource is:

http://dragonage.nexusmods.com/

Personally, I have not used any of these mods, so I am not vouching for the usefulness or safety of any of the mods that are listed at that site.

Thanks! I'll take a look at that. I've only tried a few mods, one of which interfered with my cleansing aura, but thankfully did not ruin my game.

I'm considering starting a fan fiction, and I have a character that I've redone, one was shapeshifter, but it wasn't until near the end of the game that I was able to use it (I was putting points in other spells). I'm still debating whether for rp sake, I should try shapeshifter again, because I do like the concept of shapeshifting, but I don't see my character spending much time as spider or swarm, and making her shapeshift into something that the game does not include doesn't make sense, unless accuracy is not an issue.

I'm still trying to find the best spec and spells for this particular mage, experimenting with other mage characters. I really like blood mage and spirit healer, but that is something that is, at least in the storyline, not looked upon favorably. So that narrows it down to arcane warrior and shapeshifter. I have only tried arcane warrior a few times but have not done a lot of research on it until today. So, now, I am debating between those too. Every mage I roll, it has become a habit and preferable to make my character a spirit healer--mainly because of resurrection, so I don't have to take wynne everywhere (if I have her at that point; I like her, but I can then bring another class instead of an addition mage to whatever quest or dungeon I'm working on) and because I struggled a little with my rogue without a healer for a bit into the game.

When in animal form, you can't cast any spells, and you lose all sustainable spells. Area-of-effect spells could be cast before you go into animal form, but to use healing spells you'd have to come out of animal form. Primal spells are a good supplement to shapeshifter, but to be a more effective shapeshifter, you need to focus partially on physical attributes. My shapeshifter wore leather armor, a small shield and a mace.

I don't think the idea of Shapeshifting is to spend too much time in animal form. The best way to use it is to have a nuker mage build who throws out some big fireball/AOE spells to start the fight, and then changes to mop up the survivors.

This is, for my money, the definitive guide to Shapeshifting:

I see what you mean. It's just that, in order to inflict substantial damage in animal form, you need to focus on strength, dexterity, and equipment. When I made my shapeshifter, I wanted to be the best shapeshifter possible.

actually, by equipping a staff, you have already solve the accuracy issue as it will ensure 100% hit just no critical. so no point nneded for dex. strength wise, depends on what what type of armour you want to wear. i find reaper vestment is more or less sufficient for the task. why stay in shapeshifted form when you have an arsenal of spells to cast? but if you prefer the shapeshifed form, my suggestion is the juggernaut armour, ring of ages, chasind great maul for your character. spellwise, perhaps you can go for crowd cntrol and debuff spells to assist you while in shapeshifted form. glyph, sleep, mass paralysis, mana clash, hexes are all good. you may want to go for arcane mastery for additional spellpower as you will lack damage spells other than mana clash for mage. max of 36 point in magic is more than enough as those spells dont require high magic score.

Didn't someone investigate and figure out that forms get Str/Dex/Con bonuses based on your magic?

There's a spreadsheet on the DA wiki I think

I read into it, but I'm not sure what to think...
http://dragonage.wik...hifter_Research
Should I be impressed with the numbers he laid out in the chart?

Right now, I'm still trying to decide if I should give the spec one more shot. I always have loved the concept of changing into animals in video games or books, but 2/3 of the forms, I don't like--yes, probably for stupid reasons and the fact I would've preferred non-insects/bugs.

Thanks for the replies by the way. I've been only playing this game for about a year (or two) and I never did this much reading on strategy for a character or their spec, let alone a game.

If shapeshifting is reintroduced in Dragon Age 3--if it retains anything if not everything from Origins/Awakening (which I personally would welcome heartily), I hope they make it more for combating in animal form more rather than a "last resort" tactic. lol. [It's funny for me to say this, since in WoW, a game where you can fight in animal form, I rarely play him because he's an alt.]

The Dragon Age wiki specifically states that Spellpower determines attack while shapeshifted, depending on what your stats are compared to the animal you're shifting to.

As far as I know, that's how it still works.  I was planning on rolling a shifter after I finish my current playthrough.
