Hey all,

I'm new to Dragon Age Origins. I've been playing WOW for a long time and have gotten used to the way of play they offer. Whats the best advise for people like me?

The first thing is it completely different to WOW, back to real AD&D playing. I guess I need to pause loads and think my moves, plan attacks right? Think in a group and not as a solo player?

It's not an MMO, first of all. It's pure story-driven singleplayer (as opposed to zero-story multiplayer)

Don't expect balanced classes, don't expect some sort of cost-performance ratio when it comes to bosses, don't expect balance in general.
It's quite a different cup of tea, really

However, the class-roles do translate. Tank/Heal/dps are basically the same as in most mmo's, so combat-wise it's kind of similar. But still, there are difficulty peaks

It's very similar to Baldur's Gate, and if you haven't played that then imagine it's WoW except you should be trying to successfully control 4 people instead of one. Also, the pause function is there for a reason - use it. It's not a fancy feature you pop every now and then but an important tool to get an overview of the situation and plan accordingly.

Yep.  Make sure you co-ordinate character builds for one thing.  It makes little sense to have four melee characters, for example.

The second is to develop good tactics.  You're not going to use pause all the time, so you want your party to be effective without direct orders.  Make sure to set separate tactics for Elites and higher, as well - the majority of annoyances in the game seem to come from yellows, not oranges.

Other than that, it's all about knowledge.  How fast will Cone of Cold execute if I have a staff out?  A sword and shield?  When should I move a rogue behind  a target?  Should I cast Regenerate or Heal on the Warrior at 25% life?

Oh, come on!  WoW has plenty of lore and story driving it!  Warcraft lore is some of the best out there if you're into fantasy settings.  Or, it was until they messed it up for WoW.  Draenei from space!  Anyway, no need to knock on MMOs for their lack of story.  Some have story!

Anyway, as a WoW player, you'll love the interface!  It's, uh, pretty much exactly the same as WoW.  Except, you get a neat little "tab" key that highlights all usable items on the screen.  And the space bar pauses.  Sorry, no jumping!  Otherwise, it's pretty much just like WoW.  Combat is similar, too, in that you have a tank, a healer, and some DPS.  You might have a single Mage to handle healing and some DPS, or two tanks to split up the incoming damage, or whatever you think works best, but the general idea is what you're used to.  The tank builds threat, the DPS try not to pull off of the tank, the healer keeps the tank alive and tops off the other party members as needed.

One thing that's very different from WoW is that just about every spell has a cooldown.  There aren't any "filler" abilities in DA:O.  Sometimes, you'll just have to auto-attack for a while.  That's extra true near the beginning of the game when you don't have many abilities and you don't have the stamina to use them anyway.  Another big difference is that you need to control all four of your party members.  There's a fairly decent tactics system in place that lets you "program" your party members to behave in certain ways, but you'll often want to control them directly for the harder encounters.  Finally, I find it convenient to walk around as a Rogue so taht I can disarm traps and pick locks, even though she's not my main character.  Likewise, I open doors with my tank.  Plan ahead!

Finally, don't skip all of the dialogue and quest text like you probably do in WoW.  It's not as boring, and the game wouldn't be very fun if you skipped it all.  Some of it is actually really great.  :)

* And my Mage finally got his trinket from Anub'arak25, so I'm in a good mood tonight!
