I'm at the beginning of my second play through on normal again and i am starting to feel a bit overpowered since i am more comfortable with the classes and their spells. I am also using the tactics i learned during my first play through wich is also helping alot. That and the fact that this time around i am making and using poison and traps wich i did not do on my first play through. So i see myself bumping up the difficutly to hard soon.

Thats impossible, because you can change the difficulty level at any moment and the difficulty level isnt stored in the savefile. So if you play multiple walkthroughs on different difficulties in parallel, you have to switch the difficulty level around by yourself all the time.

Why are people so interested in achievements?

Well ... its another toy to play with.

Just like the main story, side quests, party NPCs, romances, or levelup, gear, character skilling, amount of money you own, etc.

Ok, this thread is a bit old but now that I'm playing on nightmare myself, I wondered as much... So there's no benefit for playing on nightmare at all? Like special items, stronger items, more exp or something like that?

The benefit to playing on nightmare is a more challenging game, which you may or may not find fun.

There are no in game "bonuses" or "penalties" to the difficulty setting.

Aw, what a pity... I had hoped there would be at least "something" that makes the stress for playing on nightmare worthwhile. Oh well, I'll still try it... I want to say "I did it!" at least one time xD Thx for the info :)

I would be fine with that if we could at least get more exp from battles.

I'm currently playing through the game on Hard (360) and I know I won't bother with Nightmare. I feel the game is already hard enough as it is.
If only, we were getting bonus exp for the difficulty (unless I'm wrong here), I would probably go for it. Most of the time, the challenge is fine, but some specific battles are too imbalanced :

-10 traps laying on the field between you and your enemy in a fight where you don't have time to disarm them.
-8 enemies rushing you with an Elite mob in the back casting AoE fire on your party before you can set traps or cast glyphs
-It's impossible to choose to desecrate the ashes with some specific characters in your group. Without that/those characters, you simply cannot win the following battle.

I simply cannot imagine how tough Nightmare mode is.

If you are having fun with Hard difficulty, that's perfect!

Nightmare mode is for when people find Hard difficulty too easy. That's it. It's just a different set of variables, tweaked to make the game harder. It's not extra content or a bonus mode :-)

And it's not that much harder than hard mode really :-/

These are really all just a matter of modifying your tactics. A balanced party with at least one rogue and one mage is a must for difficult enounters, though, as having a warrior-heavy party tends to leave you very vulnerable against certain types of enemies. Also, you'll want to max your rogue's stealth and trap-disarming talents, have your mage learn Fireball or other like AoE spells that have incapacitating effects, and invest in at least a few ranks of Survival.

Use stealth; Have your rogue go and disarm them before initiating combat.

Survival is super useful for these kinds of encounters, since it allows you to see the casters and large mobs well before you run into them. Knowing what's up ahead, you can have your rogue lay traps in the path of your enemies in stealth mode, concentrate ranged attacks on the mages and/or break up enemy forces (see above).

Of course, there are lot of scripted encounters and combat situations initiated in dialogue that will not allow you the luxury of sneaking up to your enemy. If there's one rule of thumb for these kind of enouncters, tho, it's to always take the casters down first, whatever the cost. Make sure there's ranged weapons to go around for your entire party so you can switch to bombarding the mages with arrows on a moment's notice. The Anti-Magic, Mana Alteration, Debilitation and Hexes schools are good for taking down or guarding against enemy casters.

Personally, I think the fact that you can actually turn your friends into enemies if you're big enough a douche is one of the best aspects of the game. ^^

AFAIK the only ones that will go hostile are Wynne and Leliana, and honestly, they aren't so tough, unless your own character and the remaining party member are both warriors. As noted above, without support from other classes warriors are weak against mages and especially rogues. Anyways, altho I ultimately decided not to **** with the ashes just for **** and giggles, I did want to see how that would turn out. I had both Wynne and Leliana in my party, so that left me fighting them and the Guardian alone with Alistair. Ali unsurprisingly went down almost instantly, but my rogue was able to kill all the religious nuts with the use of traps, bombs and stealth.

Seriously, don't underestimate the high-level rogue. I had all my points pooled in Cunning, Dexterity and the rogue-talents, and my guy was ****ing untouchable, doing more damage with back-stab than my warriors with normal attacks. In the following dragon fight, I had the rest of my party stnading ground well out of the harm's way and pummeling the thing with ranged attacks, while my rogue merrily pranced around it, evading most every attack. Well, expect the sure-hit ones, but I just had Wynne heal me after those. ^^

I think I wasn't clear enough. I'm not complaining about battles that I can prepare for. I'm talking about random battles where you don't have time to scout the area for traps or prepare your strategy. I also don't go warrior-heavy. I always try to have 2 melees and 2 ranged party members.

I know I still have lots of things to explore in the game, but I got a good understanding of classes and tactics. I've made some solid tactics set that get me through most fights without much trouble. My issue is regarding those situations I listed previously. Also, I was trying to win every battle without losing anyone to get as much exp as I can, especially for my main character (mage, this time). So, whenever I would lose a key character, I would reload and try again. On Hard, thats happens quite often.

My next character will be a rogue, so I'll get to experiment a lot more with that class.
