The situation is that my ME3 game will take my character's imported ME2 saves now (after significant fiddiling), but still refuses to create a new save file for me in game. In other words I can't quick save, or save from the menu while I am playing.
I installed ME3 on a data partition on my HDD. This partition ALSO includes my documents folder with my old ME saves (which ME3 didn't see at first). When I start the game it goes in fine, and I started a new vanilla character just to see if the program was working. I get into the action, go to the menu, hit save and . . . nothing. It just hangs there.
I exited and went to the Mass Effect configuration tool. I fiddle with the graphics settings, save, and exit the configuration tool to find that ME has created the save directory in my root E:/ (instead of under Documents). I move my ME2 saves folder to this new directory and the game detects them, but the kicker is I still can't save in game: it refuses to create a new save file. It now acts like it's saving (with the icon in the lower left spinning), but I go back to the "Load" screen, and there are no saves to be found.
I even tried to put a save file in a named folder under the ME3 directory. This brought up the "Load" option on the main menu, but still didn't allow me to save in game.
Anyone have any ideas? The game is the Collector's Edition and fully updated on Origin. The only thing I can think of is trying to download the game instead of installing it from the disk, for whatever good that will do.
TLDR: My ME3 won't create new saves, and I'm stumped.

I put in a ticket with EA and I'm still waiting for an answer with them. Anyone else having a similar problem?

Hi,
this also happened with ME2 if you installed the game on a different partition than the one containing your "My Documents" folder. There is a quick fix for this, and it also works for ME3 (as well as any other games based on the UT3 engine).
For this to work, you must not launch the game via Origin. Instead, you have to use the desktop shortcut that was probably created during installation. Right-click on the shortcut and select "Properties". In the field that contains the path to "MassEffect3.exe", you need to add the parameter -nohomedir after the last quotation mark.
In my case, the path looks like this:
"F:\\Games\\Mass Effect 3\\Binaries\\Win32\\MassEffect3.exe" -nohomedir
The parameter "nohomedir" makes ME3 ignore your "My Documents" folder and instead create a "Save" folder in the same directory the game itself is installed. Your save games will now be stored under $your_installation_path/BIOGame/Save.
Again, for this to work, you must ALWAYS start ME3 using the shortcut containing the parameter.
Otherwise the game will not be initialized correctly, and will neither be able to find your save games, nor create new ones.

I have had this error on ME2, as well, here is how I solved it:
- Quit game
- Right click on My Documents on the desktop, select properties
- "Restore default location" -> OK
- When it asks you to move all the files, as well, say no
- Manually copy the BioWare folder with ME1 und ME2 saves from your custom My Docs location to the default location
- Start game (Origin or link, regardless), import ME2 Shep, wait through the cutscene, save the game the moment you are out of the committee room, quit game
- Copy the newly-created ME3 folder from the default My Docs location to your custom location
- Move My Docs back to your custom location, again, not copying anything
- Start game again and you will now be able to create as many saves as you want on that career
The above sounds like a lot of trouble, but really, sitting through the intro cutscene is the most tedious part of it. Of course, you'll have to repeat it for every new Shep you create/import but I have played through ME2 three times and it's not really hard if you do all this beforehand.
ME2 was even worse in this aspect than ME3, btw, since it made it seem like it was saving your game even when it wasn't. ME3 at least shows you that it doesn't work.

Hey Koveras
Jeez, I was afraid it would boil down to that. This is already the third "modern" game that isn't capable of coping with modern system set-ups. The other two games I encountered were The Witcher 2 and Alan Wake.
