well if ur king is going in full battle with darkspawen.. and thanks to his bloodline grey wardens are welcome feralden again... after... quite some time. I think its a act of paying ur debts that duncan sends all grey wardens in battle to defend the King of the country.

would be bit nasty " look men our king is losing... na we cant help him .. as long as there is no archdemon in the front rows we dont fight ".

jory had to die, if only to keep daveth company in the spirit world :P

If you get the wrong impression because you don't read a book then that is a problem with the game.

You get the wrong impression because you choose to judge Duncan based on very little you know about him, not because you didn't read the book.
The book will not make you love Duncan instantly either, he has a fair deal of jackassery in his past, but you'll have much more evidence to base your judgment on.

Personally I like the Duncan character for a few reasons.

1. The books. If you've read the prequel books by David you know all about Duncan and that he wasn't always the epitome of Grey Wardens, in fact he was a gutter urchin who even after inducted still stole from the circle and kissed the girls. Who he is within the game is a display of just how much change the end of the book had on him and you understand why he is the way he is. He went from not taking being a Warden seriously to seeing the true evil dark spawn are first hand as if he saw a brood mother himself.

2. He killed Jory. (Jory drew first)

3. He dual wields some very wicked looking weapons.

4. He's Obi-Wan. And dammit Obi-Wan kicks ass in any form.

It really must be the beard, there's no way everybody who likes Duncan has read the books. The books do add a lot of depth to Loghain and Duncan though so it's hard to discuss this without establishing which sources should be considered.

You know, I keep seeing the books mentioned, but I think they're completely irrelevant.

It's like saying Halo has a complex, rich, and nuanced story...
...based on the books.

He's kind when he can be, ruthless when he must be. He has a great voice. First origins I did were the dwarf commoner and the city elf female, and in both of those he comes across very well. (Hey, he did save my life in both of them. And in both cases he clearly disapproves of the reasons why people are trying to screw me over (killing a rapist/being casteless and fighting in a proving.)

And his voice actor does a brilliant job.

I don't remember him "saving" me from anything in the dwarf commoner origin...I was set up fairly well to become the next underlord when he did his swoop in to save the day thing...

He dies too early and you don't even get an obligatory battle sequence with him, so I didn't really get too attached to him.

Strangely not so bothered about his tendency to murder people and practically force people to join his strange order before showing any kind of compassion to them, though.

If he had survived longer he would have contested with Master Li from Jade Empire as my favorite mentor type character, whose voice lives on magnificently in Uldred.
"It would be so much easier if you just... accepted it..."

I think you are forgetting all the guards surrounding you ready to put you to the torch for defiling the Proving.

um no they caught me and imprisoned me...got put in whats his names cells, broke out and killed him, was chatting with Leske when Duncan showed up and asked what I planned to do. At that point according to dialog options I "could" have stayed and taken the underlords place, but sis and Leske pushed for me to go with Duncan.

You need to pay more attention.

Your crime boss kidnapped/bribed your way over to his personal prison, where he was going to kill you. You broke out, only to be captured again by the real guards.

Without Duncan grabbing you, you would have been arrested by people who consider Casteless worthless scum. After defiling their oh-so-important Proving, the odds of you surviving would be slim.

I just loaded up my dwarf commoner origin save, right after killing the current leader of the carta. As you exit the hideout a person shouts at you pointing you out to the guards a bunch of guards surround you and Duncun shows up with the offer. If you take every option to refuse then the head dude will tell the guards to put you in irons, only then Duncan finally puts his foot down and says "RIGHT OF CONSCRIPTION b-ches!"

Duncan defaults to a ridiculously nice guy. That's about all there is to it. Just try to ****** him off in ANY of the origin stories; you can't do it. In the greater scheme of things, though, he is a "do whatever it takes" guy, whether it's to stop the Blight or to preserve the Grey Wardens. What do you think would happen if Jory was allowed to wander off and tell everyone that the Wardens drink darkspawn blood to get their powers? It's a secret for a reason. I wonder why a guy with a family wants to join a mostly suicidal order in the first place.

But yes, Duncan will do whatever it takes. Trick is, he realizes that the first step to doing ANYTHING is making sure that everyone gets along and can work together. He's not a "depose the tyrant king!" kind of guy so much as a "let's go talk to the tyrant king" kind of guy. But yes, I believe he would sneak in and murder the tyrant king if it came to that, rather than attempting open rebellion. And he'd succeed, mostly because of the beard. Duncan is so GAR, he should have his own anime series.

Duncan = the worst kind of evil.  Winning at any cost for the sake of a "greater good" is the motto of terrorists, zealots, and those who are too blind to see that they're sacrificing the very things for which they fight.

It's actions that tell the world if you're a terrorist or not. Did Duncan do any terrorist acts? No.

He's got to do thing because if he does not, well, then the world goes down. If you could destroy a town of 100.000 people to save the rest of the world, would you do that? I think Duncan would.

As a response to some other too, Duncan can't tell the King what to do simply because it's not his right to do so. The Grey Warden are advisors in the situation with the main goal of killing the Archdemon. Along the way it doesn't hurt that they can fight the Darkspawn like any other soldier.

Duncan's beard is magnificent, it's even better than Chuck Norris's! (Hides under a desk after speaking Chuck's name in vain)

anyways, I became really attached to Duncan my first playthrough, I played the Human noble, so I really felt like I owed him a lot and all he asked was that I help him save the world. I wish Bioware had included more dialogue with Duncan, the poor man gets killed before you really get to talk about anything for that matter. I had to resort to speaking with Alistair over anything Grey Warden

I like Duncan.. not just because he saved my hide, but also my mentor. (I loved listening to his voice when he spoke) :)

To me Duncan was as honest & true to the King & his Grey Wardens as he could get.. A true follower of his King & battle warrior.

It irked me to NO end when he was killed after us lighting the beacon fire.. I would of liked more of Duncan thru-out a few of the towns on the map we visit, before the Dev's decided to kill him off *shakes fist* :(

FYI.. this mage is going after Loghain! I hated that '****' way before he turned on Duncan and the King!! I don't care how great a war leader he is!

Hah! As though something as fragile as a desk could stop a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick! You might as well stand and take it like a man, at least you'll die clean, and not with splinters in your face.

I've always saw him as almost a father figure, much like Alistair does.  Not quite so much, of course, but he does give off the wise mentor air while still showing he's pretty badass.

You literally cannot ****** the man off.  My female noble kind of went along with him, just being grateful to have someone there to help and because she was kinda in shock, but my female city elf wanted none of him and did her best to pick a fight.  Which was kinda funny, really, an unarmed elf wench threatening to beat up a gray warden in full battle gear. He stays pretty neutral even if he does slip you a bit of help BEFORE recruiting you, because he feels your cause is just.

And yes the beard does add to it, along with his shiny and unattainable armor. My female noble warrior would look so badass in his armor, too. Such a shame.

In The Calling he's a young guy that steals things and gets in trouble and in the game he's sort of grown up guy that's responsible. If you read the book you would see how he "grew" in personality and aside from that he and his beard are awesome

Bah. I thought he was too glorified for the amount of screentime he had. I guess he's supposed to be one of those characters you appreciate more if you read the books associated with him. I hated it when WoW tried to pull that **** off, and I'm certainly not fond of it now. Perhaps I'll read the books some day and change my stance but for now I don't see what makes him so vaunted that everybody has to talk about him.

The Calling is definitely part of the reason I love Duncan so much, I liked seeing how different he was in some of the Origins as well. The Dwarf Commoner origin, he seemed to genuinely sympathize with the PC, and was a lot kinder and more engaging, IMO. On the other side of it, the Human Noble Origin, he forces Bryce to give his child over to the Wardens as 'payment' for saving them. I know why he did it, but it was interesting to see the difference between them.

And to be perfectly honest, Duncan's resigned sigh after Alistair's 'wearing a dress and dancing the Remigold' line would have been enough for me to love him completely. That sigh just said "Oh Maker I have two of them now."
