And to be perfectly honest, Duncan's resigned sigh after Alistair's 'wearing a dress and dancing the Remigold' line would have been enough for me to love him completely. That sigh just said "Oh Maker I have two of them now."

I agree 100% on that one! I just wish they would of kept him alive, least for a good 2 more hours of gameplay, just to get his reaction on some of the goofy stuff me and Alistar did. The stern father-figure with the two clowns of the Grey Wardens and still manage to stop the blight. Tell me that just doesn't ooze awesomeness - Almost awesome to the point of Duncans beard... almost.

The big reason why I love him is I played as a Human Noble the first time and the end when you must leave your parents he has the sad eyes and is I guess a little heartbroken to see such things happening, like Leliana with Sten. "You're such a softie!" <3

Duncan is BILLY MAYS -20 years.  Check the beard.  Which explains his awesomeness, no doubt.  He will Oxy-Clean the Blight away!

The books are relevant because they're written by the game's primary writer, not by a third-party like with most other games. We're seeing 'history' books because DA is moving forward in the time line. It likely won't pull a George Lucas and jump back in time 50 years or whatever. Or like the more recent Star Trek...

At any rate, what I like best about Duncan is his voice actor, who also narrates each origin introduction. My best impression of him in the game was in the dwarf commoner origin; he seemed to go out of his way to be polite to my character, compared to what I experienced in mage, human noble, and city elf.

Other characters I really like include Lanaya, Dagna, Daveth (RIP - figures they kill the rogue with the most entertaining voice acting and lines), and Wynne. Loghain was annoying, especially at the Landsmeet; I kept wishing for David Warner (Jon Irenicus) to be speaking instead. Ah, now that would have been cause to reload and replay the landsmeet a few times.

Just FYI, Duncan's voice actor is Gandalf in LotRO. That adds another level of awesome to him. :)

I liked Duncan - might I remind you that in the human noble origin, he saves your father (true, your father happens to have been mortally wounded, but still). Honestly, he could've just left Bryce to Howe's men if the only thing he cared about was grabbing your character to join the Wardens, but he didn't.

I thought the person who did Gandalf in LotRO was Harry Chase? I still remember Peter Renaday's Al Mualim in Assassin's Creed. Really like his voice.

I like Duncan because he is a Lawful Neutral character. One of my favorite kinds.

I'd have said he's more of a Neutral Good type :bandit:

He leaves two out of the battle, and has already called for Orlesian Grey Wardens to come to Ferelden.  Not unwise at all.

Well, to be fair, if you roleplay that you really don't want to join the Grey Wardens, the only way to put you in there was your father.  Hard to refuse the dying man.  Would have had to use force majeure in order to compel the player to join.

I think that the significance of the right of conscription is overrated, it is a law, and those are broken all the time. If you don't want to, a piece of paper wont make me change my mind.

I can't imagine a Neutral Good character slaying Ser Jory. I do see what you mean especially considering his history.

I just tend to think of him as more Lawful Neutral, where his morality plays second fiddle to his duty.

Yeah it's hard to define him. I'd fint it hard for a Lawful Neutral to even recruit people like Daveth though, but perhaps one needs to twist and turn the alignment system a bit. God knows that system is hard enough to cope with anyway haha.

The Calling is definitely part of the reason I love Duncan so much, I liked seeing how different he was in some of the Origins as well. The Dwarf Commoner origin, he seemed to genuinely sympathize with the PC, and was a lot kinder and more engaging, IMO. On the other side of it, the Human Noble Origin, he forces Bryce to give his child over to the Wardens as 'payment' for saving them. I know why he did it, but it was interesting to see the difference between them.

And to be perfectly honest, Duncan's resigned sigh after Alistair's 'wearing a dress and dancing the Remigold' line would have been enough for me to love him completely. That sigh just said "Oh Maker I have two of them now."

The noble story is the only one where my character actually didn't wind up liking Duncan very much.  Felt he was taking too much advantage.

Yeah, I do have to agree. It felt very much "I'll help you get out of here, but then you have to forfeit your life to our cause. Or you can just die here, what's your pick? Die, or let me help? Die or forfeit? What? What'll it be? Huh?"

Duncan would've killed it. The Archdemon was too scared of Duncan to appear while he was alive.

You need to pay more attention.

Your crime boss kidnapped/bribed your way over to his personal prison, where he was going to kill you. You broke out, only to be captured again by the real guards.

Without Duncan grabbing you, you would have been arrested by people who consider Casteless worthless scum. After defiling their oh-so-important Proving, the odds of you surviving would be slim.

Seriously that was not the way mine went, granted I didn't press the issue about joining, but I did say I needed to think about it and was able to run all over Orzammar. Went to the merchant, asked Rica what she thought and then talked to Leske, think I even spoke to b**** mom.

The only reason you were able to wander around was because Duncan was there. See:

I just loaded up my dwarf commoner
origin save, right after killing the current leader of the carta. As
you exit the hideout a person shouts at you pointing you out to the
guards a bunch of guards surround you and Duncun shows up with the
offer. If you take every option to refuse then the head dude will tell
the guards to put you in irons, only then Duncan finally puts his foot
down and says "RIGHT OF CONSCRIPTION b-ches!"

Every origin story is rigged: Either you go with Duncan, or you're ****ed.
All the alternatives, if Duncan doesn't step in: Wander the Deep Roads until you die, get arrested and executed, die of poison, die in your castle.

um no the reason I ran around was to ask Leske and Rica if I should stay and run dust town or should I go with Duncan. That is the way it is still on my save.

I don't get the point why Duncan is for most playes best NPC.

I for myself liked Ban Teagen much more, i think he has a great personality and is very carismatic!

I like way to many of the male characters in this game.  I think it's the accents (British ones get this American country girl every time)

You've missed the point. The point is the dialog immediately upon exiting, where someone points you out and the guards show up to arrest you. The only reason you're free to wander around is because Duncan is there.

Wow we have different playthrough experiences...OMG, I just loaded up my save not that long ago, if I tell Duncan that I don't want to go and go through all the options to that effect THEN dwarf points and runs and the guards show up and Duncan has to invoke. As was my original experience though I wasn't forced into it, I chose freely not to "rule" dust town, there was no swooping and conscripting for me, it was in my view a choice I made.
