If you decide to give it a go, be aware that you'll probably be quite confused by most of the game's systems for awhile (unless you are familiar with D&D terminology and rules). You'll probably also die, alot.

Once you get the knack of it though, you'll realise that it's a much deeper game than DA:O could ever have hoped to be. Despite the fact that you have limited control over the main plot of the game, I feel that the actual roleplay-ability of BG beats any other Bioware game by a longshot.

If you liked DA: Origins you'd like Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 as well as their expansions. The easiest way of getting today would be via download thorugh gog.com as others have suggested. Or to wait untill this summer, because a company called beamdog? I think are re-making these games and calling them BG:Enhanced Edition. I think graphics etc. will be updated etc. etc. I'm not sure if gog.com games allow modding or maybe the gog.com games have some mods in them. There's a mod out there that's let you play BG1 with the BG2 engine, meaning better graphics, higher resolutions, gem bags and potion bags as well as items stack etc. etc.

And while BG1 is more of a free-roam experience where you can get into trouble going places your level (say you're a level 2 character) suggests you really shouldn't, it can be a very satisfying experience to do battle with monsters and enemies and survive. I remember when I first went into Orzammer in DA: Origins being fairly low level; I didn't expect to be ambushed, but I stayed, and ehen I finally won the fight, I felt - great. The BG2 game really is more akin, I think to DA2?, where it leads you, no not ny the hand,. as som many games to today, but it much clearer what you need to do adn when you need to do. Also, personally, I like the political plot of BG1 more than the personal plot of BG2, but that's just me.

In BG2 and in BG2, you quickly learn that the blackened areas of the maps are places you haven't been to yet. I can remember if this works the same for DA: Origins or DA2? Also, the combat in BG1 and BG2 is similar (of sorts) to the combat in DA: Origins and DA2 (a bit). You use space to pause the game, and then issue commands to your team, and when you unpause the game, the team then does what have them do. Just please note that the combat might not be as fast as either DA: Origins or DA2, since a round is six seconds and a turn is sixty seconds? (or is that the other way around?)

I would also advice you to be play as human fighter, male or female, the first time, you go through the game. And to play with what's considered the canon party: Jaheira/Khalid, Imoen, Minsc, yourself, and Dynaheir in BG1. In BG2, well, don't want to spoil this since there are some surprises in there.

edit:

Also, get bows, and slings, and darts in BG1 as soon as possible. For a low level character (level 1-3), these weapons come in very handy. Also, use Imoen to scout a lot and lead monsters enemies towards, then just shoot them - with your bows etc. In the game, of course.
